Kar Alabrek was formerly the capital of Tarthos following the Exodus. After a series of crippling bombardments and sieges upon the garrison city, Kar Alabrek was abandoned for Markosian City. A site of some attention during the Ekind Uprising in 28 ABY, it was discovered that the previously lethal doses of airborne radiation had severely dropped to livable levels besides the over abundance of weaponized spores. A reconstruction effort for Kar Alabrek had been commissioned by clan and house summits, culminating in a massive policing and rebuilding program spearheaded by Muz Ashen in 34 ABY.

Description

Located along the northern coast of Lugar Da Forca as the former principal settlement on Tarthos, Kar Alabrek was abandoned in 31 ABY following a devastating orbital bombardment which warped and disturbed the landscape. The ruined city was a home to many different alien-spawned creatures and the Dlarit Special Operations Group until it was discovered that a remnant of the Ekind had access to the city in early 33 ABY. Following the suppression of the Ekind Uprising, the city's reconstruction was commissioned in an effort for expansion and revitalization upon the planet.

While incomplete titled the city's progress mildly, the concept was to support Markosian's stalled expansion by giving the over-inflated population another location to settle into while supporting the burden of the Dlarit military. With the city focusing much more heavily upon a military stance than that of Markosian, the city appeared much more industrial away from the civilian sectors than its peaceful sister with its wedge-like military sector. Conceptual imagery, blueprints and saw Kar Alabrek becoming more of the crown jewel of Tarthos over Markosian upon its completion due to a more detailed planning phase in addition to the much larger acreage consumed for the project itself. In addition to the spaceport for transportation between the two major cities, a high-speed rail system was planned to allow easier access for civilians and to allow swifter transportation of military assets should it be required.

Starting with Tasha’Vel Versea as Quaestor, renewed interest in returning Kar Alabrek to prominence returned. As the Lion of Tarthos returned home from the Iron Throne, his attentions turned this way as well, using his considerable connections and wealth to help turn the blighted city back into the headquarters of the House as well the pride of Tarthos.

History

Initial groundbreaking for Kar Alabrek was done in 24 ABY with the Hub centered around the ancient Alabrek Castle, the follow decade were amongst the most prosperous years in the city's history. Kar Alabrek operated as a garrison city and the principle settlement on Tarthos, providing a home for the Dlarit Security Force and the members of House Marka Ragnos. Like the city of Seng Karash on Aeotheran, Kar Alabrek was a large walled settlement with outlying districts formed around a central hub. Unlike Seng Karash the principle feature of Kar Alabrek was military not commercial or industrial and though it did not have a floating defense like the Marakith Skyhook a large number of concealed surface to air silos, ion cannons and turbolasers had been deployed at strategic points around the city. In addition heavy fighter cover patrolled the sky over the city and the space station Onyx provided orbital support. 28 ABY saw a majority of the city destroyed in a siege against the True Brotherhood; designed by former Governor Malisane de Ath at the request of Governor-General Trevarus Caerick, assistance from the newly formed Special Operations Group saw the city reconstructed by 29 ABY. With a focus placed on the improvement of their military, Dlarit ensured that the city had an abundance of new facilities built for the Dlarit Security Force during the city's reconstruction. Peace was not to last as the Imperials stormed the Orian System in 29 ABY resulting in bombardment of the city's eastern sectors including some damages to the east wing of Alabrek Castle. A decision to welcome refugees with open arms saw Kar Alabrek left as it was with the Castle itself repaired and reopened for members of the Dlarit Special Operations Group.

In 31 ABY, a group of Force-devoid aliens invaded the Orian System and subsequently began another orbital bombardment for the city. Civilians were swiftly evacuated to completed regions of Markosian City and surrounding settlements with the bulk of the DSF evacuating with them. The bombardment had dealt a heavier blow than expected as it was soon discovered that high levels of radiation and mutagens had consumed the city. Kar Alabrek was designated as a quarantine zone with the Special Operations Group assigned to Castle Alabrek in order to begin efforts to cleanse the region of its contaminants by order of Robert Sadow and Fremoc Pepoi. Early in 30 ABY, it was discovered that remnants of the Ekind had infiltrated the catacombs beneath the city and the castle itself. With all stationed members of the Special Operations Group either slain or mutated into hideous alien-spawn, the members of Naga Sadow returned to find radiation had nearly vanished although the city was still in disrepair with many alien spores still in abundance. Following the quelling of the Ekind Uprising, the city was left in the hands of the Special Operations Group once more. Late in the year, an emphasis was placed on reconstruction and expansion across Tarthos by Governor Tiberius Ma' Nacohh and Prefect Methyas Pepoi L'eonheart with a projected revitalization effort to be started in early to mid-31 ABY following completion of the repairs on Markosian City. These repairs and revitalization efforts were stymied by various conflicts, with the ceasing of cooperation between Dlarit and the Orion Assembly effectively leaving the City in a state of limbo.

Devolving to a state of urban decay while the House tended to other more important matters, Kar Alabrek became controlled by various unsavory elements, from entrepreneurial criminals building cartels to upstart companies who took advantage of the captive audience. Without a military presence, those who could afford to do so left the city, fleeing to Markosian or leaving the system entirely.

The return of Muz Ashen to Marka Ragnos found him interested in returning to the Ragnos Cathedral. Finding it in ruins, he began work to retake and restore the Cathedral to its former glory, as well as the surrounding city. Using connections made throughout the galaxy, he found new investors and quickly found the city restored to its rightful state.

Historical Details

Kar Alabrek as it stood in early 20 ABY

Where Seng Karash serves as the jewel of the Dlarit Corporation's commercial, financial, and mining interests; Kar Alabrek served as the military bastion of the Orian system, housing headquarters for the Dlarit Security Force: including the Dlarit Navy, the Dlarit Army, the Dlarit Military Academy, Dlarit Intelligence, Dlarit Military Police, and a recruitment ground for the Dlarit Special Operations Group, while the Special Operations Group was formally based on Sepros. Kar Alabrek was a full military city, providing accommodation not only for the men and women of the Security Force, but also their families.

Where Seng Karash already provided comfortable living conditions, Kar Alabrek had been purposefully designed to maintain high standards of living and bolster morale in order to ensure a loyal military force. The city was protected by a starship grade shield generator to defend it from orbital attacks, while also shielding it from much of the harsh Tarthosian climate outside the city walls. Though nowhere near as big as Seng Karash, there were a number of training facilities located outside the city walls accessible either by shuttle or direct rail link.

The history of Kar Alabrek actually stretches back to the Dlarit Corporation's arrival in the Orian system a decade earlier when Tarthos was designated to be the home of the corporation's military interests. The former security headquarters were constructed on the site of what is now Kar Alabrek under the guidance of then Lieutenant Governor Trevarus Caerick. However, although Seng Karash had been completed in time for the Exodus in 21 ABY, with the sudden onset of the Exodus construction of the original Kar Alabrek was rushed to completion in 24 ABY, leading to the gaps in security that were exploited during the Invasion of Orian. While parts of the city remained similar to before, the main infrastructure had been completely overhauled to close any security holes.

As with Seng Karash, Kar Alabrek had a large hydroponic facility for food growth and water processing underneath the city, both allowing it to be self-sufficient in basic resources and to supply food for the Dlarit fleet. Similarly to Seng Karash, the buildings were prefabricated allowing for the city to have been rapidly constructed following the original settlement being razed during the invasion in 28 ABY. Additionally this would allow, in theory, the city to be relocated should the Orian system ever fall permanently or suffer a major natural disaster.

Layout

Kar Alabrek is a shielded city, with an advanced protective barrier used to protect its inhabitants from the harsh elements of Tarthos’ nature. With several heavily guarded facilities creating the shield manned by Marka Ragnos assets, the city is kept safe from not only natural disasters, but outside military intervention.

Central Hub

A careful blend of its bordering sectors, the Central hub was the jewel of Kar Alabrek with Alabrek Castle and the encompassing grounds at its heart. This sector was nestled amongst several hills that kept the city's other two sectors divided and is comprised of most of the former real estate Kar Alabrek controlled before it was abandoned, these massive nearly mountainous surroundings formed from the bombardments of its past.

Reconstruction of Kar Alabrek necessitated massive military intervention in 34 ABY, purging the city of most of the organized crime elements. Aiding to Marka Ragnos and Naga Sadow military assets was Keibatsu Nihilgenia soldiers as well as DIG Security officers.

Several massive construction projects took place rapidly during the reconstruction, shifting the primary thrust of Kar Alabrek from a militaristic to that of a commercial center, taking advantage of the rich ores far beneath the surface of the frozen world. Due to the constraints of the Shield, Kar Alabrek’s construction is far more compact, buildings tending to grow up, rather than out. As a result, the vastly improved skyline of Kar Alabrek has several iconic structures.

holographic plans of the reconstructed Kar Alabrek

Coil - A towering entertainment and hospitality skyscraper that nearly touches the upper edges of the shield, Coil includes accommodations, a galaxy-class dining experience, nightclubs and casinos. Commissioned and owned by Muz Ashen and unnamed business partners, there there are levels to which only Brotherhood members have access, making Coil an important location for clan and house activities.

DIG-Ganyu Tower - Architecturally interesting, with huge sweeping curves and a communications array featuring prominently throughout the center of the building, this skyscraper serves as offices for DIG and the Ganyu corporation, a Kyataran mining operation. Operating local communications and holonet transceiver services, this building has a high presence of security due to the importance to the City’s infrastructure.

SolWat - This handsome and sharply angled tower houses the operations center of SolWat, a company that originally took over from House control when they retreated from the city. The modern reformation of the old power and water utilities caused a vast change in how the company did business. With the entire board of directors forcibly removed due to corruption and collusion, SolWat’s guiding principles are kept closely tied to the wellbeing of the city and the House. Using Solar Farms at the edges of the shielded area to generate power and fuel their melting and purification plants, SolWat provides fresh water and power to the entirety of Kar Alabrek.

Daragon Starport - named for the legendary hyperspace explorers, this towering starport also serves as the hub for the maglev monorail public transit of Kar Alabrek. With architecture infused with the ancient design elements, the StarPort is readily identifiable by visitors and traders alike.

Tarthos Trade Center - Reaching into the sky like a twisting spire, this needle of a building hosts myriad offices and commercial purposes. The lower levels designed as a public shopping centre, people can find almost anything that they need or want by perusing these storefronts and trader’s stalls.

Nazave Hospital - Housing a state of the art medical facility, this building sharply points to the sky, dividing down the center in an iconic and slightly asymmetrical manner. Well funded, this medical facility also houses an advanced educational centre.

Alabrek Castle - The heart of Kar Alabrek, the fortified Ragnos Cathedral serves as the center of Marka Ragnos operations. Devastated throughout it’s history by war and the aspirations of the powerhungry, the most modern iteration of the Castle has been designed to withstand any and all attacks. The military of the House operates from within these walls, while the mystical depths within the ancient temples and the tunnels below serve as hearth to the force sensitive members of Marka Ragnos.

Northern Coast

A view of the Northern Coast at sunrise

A peaceful and serene view was available to most of the residents of the Northern coast, the city's civilian sector focused on the benefits of living on a Dlarit controlled world by offering incredible scenery along with a number of amenities within this sector.

Southern Plains

Industrious and organized are words used to describe the Southern plains. Without the massive shielding complex, this area plays host to several of the massive mining operations that are so critical to the Economy of both Kar Alabrek and the House Marka Ragnos. Delving deep into the mantle of the planet for valuable ores, this frostbitten area is laced with sealed tubes, connected to the maglev monorails of Kar Alabrek proper, ferrying workers from the city to the facilities in ‘the Ice Mines’ in relative comfort.

Foundries as well as droid factories and arms manufacturers make good use of the bitter cold, using the frigid atmosphere to assist in the cooling of their machinery and reactors. Steam plumes are a mainstay of the sky here, sometimes blotting out the view of downtown.

Cold-weather training grounds for clan military forces are in this region, as well as a sprawling prefabricated complex housing a mock city for urban warfare tactics. Access to the military base is highly controlled, with the only access to the facility being through its own starport and underground maglev lines to connect to critical locations in the city.

Bala-brek

Located several meters beneath the surface of the city, these former catacombs used for Hydroponic facilities and by the remnants of the Ekind have been heavily expanded and converted into a working and fully functional auxiliary for the city with a remarkable size matching nearly the same acreage as the city itself.

The ‘undercity’ has been highly modernized, holding several levels of residential and commercial ‘streets’, with connecting maglev lines to the surface. The natural protection from the elements that comes from being underground is augmented by the warmth of the core of the planet. With multiple air purification and filtration facilities spread throughout, the undercity is rather comfortable, if claustrophobic.

Lower, and far more restricted levels house vast hydroponic farms that serve not only to feed the City, but also to purify water and air. Several of the laboratories have been seeking to recreate conditions on distant planets to get a foothold on the exotic foodstuffs trade, with limited success. Kar Alabrek’s Thermodynamic generator is housed on the lower levels as well, serving as a constant backup to SolWat’s solar generation on the surface.

Connecting maglev lines from the Military base on the southern plain allow for rapid deployment of military assets and personnel to various locations within the city, and direct freight carrier tunnels connect several facilities to the trade center and Daragon StarPort.

Deeper than even those levels are several abandoned levels, once used for storage, military or other, more criminal ends. Rumor has it that the Night Hawks’ base, Level Nine is hidden deep in these levels, as well as some of the remaining ancient Ekind catacombs.
