:Main article: Scholae Palatinae
Clan Scholae Palatinae is one of the Dark Brotherhood's six Clans. Originally descendant of House Scholae Palatinae, it was the first House to attain the prestige of Clanhood (after Alvaak). Today, it presides as lordship and rulers of the Cocytus system and an integral, driving force within the Dark Brotherhood.
Brief History
The history of the Clan is steeped in intrigue, betrayal and, most importantly, tradition. Scholae Palatinae has seen eras of darkness, where the very existence of the Clan was called into question. However, on the opposite side of the pendelum, the Royal Clan has also seen several Golden Ages in which the members joined together in the pursuit of success...

Government and Politics
Government of a System
The Monarchy
Monarchy - one to rule - is a form of government that a single head of state acts as the monarch. It also refers to the people and institutions that make up the royal or imperial establishment, or to the realm over which the monarch reigns. Additionally, the Monarch serves as a symbol of continuity and holds substantial power via tradition and law.
The lowest branch of government control upon a planet of the Cocytus System is regionalized and under the direct supervision of the presiding Grand Duke/Duchess of the Region. The number of Regions varies based on the number of Nobles, citizens and whether the system is at war or peace.
Overseeing the Grand Dukes/Duchesses, or Regional Supervisors, are the Kings/Queens - the rulers of the four planets of the Cocytus System. Each has been entrusted to rule: oversee economy, spiritual growth, maintain a local militia and expand the resourcefulness of their stead. The number of Kings/Queens never surpass four; however, at times, several thrones have been empty simultaneously.
Above the Kings/Queens stands the Emperor/Empress. The omnipotent force that binds the will of the Cocytus system, this monarch rules de facto over other monarchs without stripping the monarchly-related titles from his vassals. This Heir/Heiress can also trace their lineage back to the Sovereign Protectors of Emperor Palpatine: Scholae Palatinae. Thus, it is pre-requisite for the Emperor to be able to trace their current lineage to the Clan of Mystic advisors, warriors and protectors of the Cocytus System.
The exception to the absolute Monarch rule resides within the Royal Clan of Scholae Palatinae. In which, the Emperor has three groups of mystic advisors known as the Senate, Coven, and Wards, which convene with the Lord of the Clan in all major decisions concerning change and direction within the Cocytus System. These high ranking officials are given immunity within the Star System and report only to the Head of State.
Government of a Clan
The Tyrants
Tyranny - absolute power through the people in an organization - Generally an aristrocrat, or member of the Royal Clan, who has gained power over others, through experience and support, usurps the direct command of the Clan's direction and fate.
While some tyrants now carry the negative connotation of being cruel, evil men (or women) who place their interests, or the interestes of a small group, ahead of the 'overall good' of the people they are tasked with governing. The Tyrants of Scholae Palatinae have expanded their inner circle to include all of the Royal Clan: Scholae Palatinae. The Consul of the Clan, places the best interest of his members and Clan before that of the Cocytus or Antei Systems - often drawing displeasure from fellow Dark Councilors - and imparting great evils to perpetuate the success of those whom he is tasked to lead.
However, no tyrant can lord over an entire community of supporters without the necessary support. Thus, a ProConsul is elected and given the honorary title of Right-Hand; tasked with numerous duties by the Consul to ensure the Clan runs efficiently. To separate the Clan, preventing an insurrection, it is broken into two Houses - a Quaestor being given the task of directing a part of the Clan's future and direction on a smaller level. To ensure the Quaestors did not become over burdened the Consul and Proconsul found it as best practice to allow the Quaestors to appointed Aediles. The second leader of each House is directed to support the House Leader and stimulate activity, mentorship and communication. Thus the Tyrant is allowed to direct the general assembly by delegating to a select, trusted few whom also place the Clan before the greater good of the Cocytus System.

Economy
Overview
Amongst the wealthiest of Star Systems, a member of the Mid-Rim Trade Federation (MRTF), the Cocytus system stands economically diverse. A first tier economic system, the economy is heavily fortified in the technology and experimental science industries, employs almost half of all citizens. An unusual development, the primary sector of Cocytus' economic development revolves heavily around raw, natural resources: wood, crude, duracrete. While the manufacturing sector actually resides amongst none of the planets, but a free-floating shipyard strategically placed within the orbit of Judecca. Raw goods are pre-processed upon each of the four orbiting planets, then shipped into orbit for assembly of commercial transports and, though relatively in small amounts, military vessels.
Inter-stellar trade makes up a large part of the economy, particularly of its technological advancements and breakthrough science. The largest consumer, and greatest trade partner, is the denizens of the Antei System accounting for a vast 88% of exports and 33% of imports as of 23 ABY.
Often perceived as a free market economy, government intervention is slightly more prevalent than the wealthy Core world economies; however, it is dramatically less than those of the Outer Rim worlds. The per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of Judecca and Antenora is considerably higher regional income than either Ptolomea and Caina, both of which are plagued by natural, elemental barriers that are beneficial to overall economic stimulation.
Exports
- Technology (Weapons, Energy, Propulsion)
- Experimental Science (Advanced Gravity Studies, Applied Physics, Dynamic Anatomy)
- Natural Resources (Wood, Crude Oil, Duracrete)
Imports
- Food Stuffs (Exotic meats, climate-sensitive greens)
- High Grade Ore (Ditanium, Tritanium, Cortosis)
- Advanced Weaponry (Targeting Systems, Missile Production)
Society and Culture
The Societal Element
The Society of each member in the Clan is twofold: Clan and House. There is an underlying societal nature that promotes commonly shared values as a Clan, yet distinct differences in perception and interpretation for members of each House.
Clan Scholae Palatinae

The Royal Clan
Scholae Palatinae is as diverse and unique as the galaxy in which it resides in. The Clan is built upon a strong moral base that constitutes fair play, equal opportunity and the ability to speak freely in a constructive manner. This involves discussions and chances in Gaming, Writing, Leadership and Proposals. Each of which is seen as imperative and necessary as the diverse group of individuals begins to work side-by-side for the betterment of their fictional background and reality as a family.
However, this group still remains devout to the teachings of Dark Jedi - letting their passions and emotions direct their actions - as they manipulate the Force and that galaxy around them. The Sons, Daughters and Disciples of the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, are pupils dedicated to their craft: to bring Order to the galaxy. To accomplish their mission they work continually to become grand warriors, mystical Force users and phenomenal pilots.

The Scholars of the Dragon
House Acclivis Draco, The House of the Rising Dragon, has a proud tradition and history within the Clan. For many of years the House has maintained the swagger of the Clan - a host of phenomenal Krath writers and legendary innovators have enabled the Clan to hold the reservation as one of the best writing Clans in the Brotherhood, a major contributor to Brotherhood fiction and the house of the original creator of the Master/Student Program Michael Halcyon. It is based in Dragons Citadel on Antenora.

The Children of the Sword
A House named for the legendary blade thought to be the first Light Saber in existence. Originally a Sith House in the days of the Clan's creation, it temporarily disappeared from the radar as the proud House of Dorimad Sol assumed the mantle of Defenders of Scholae Palatinae. However, the Sith would not lay in wait forever, hoping for the Obelisk-based House to fall into obscurity. A feud broke loose between the Clan's Obelisk and Sith, leaving the victor to be the strongest House - a House forged from battle. Caliburnus was that House... the Proud Warriors of the Clan.

The First To Battle, The Last To Retreat
Originally named in honor of a great lightsaber duelist, House Dorimad Sol stood as Scholae Palatinae's Obelisk House. Tasked with safeguarding the Clan, their tradition would carry on from the Clan's conception until the days where House Caliburnus engaged, and defeated, the proud warriors of the Clan. The House was scratched from the roster, thought to have passed with the previous Golden Age. However, during the reign of Braecen Kaeth & Phoenix Olkyssagh Palpatine, the House of Soldiers re-opened intent on ridding the Clan Domain of the Yuuzhan Vong threat that plagued to strip away their control on the Sector. They are the soldiers on the front line... They are House Dorimad Sol.

The Cultural Element
The Culture of Scholae Palatinae has advanced and diversified since its initial conception as a Clan in the Brotherhood. Countless members have pushed the traditional boundaries of the Dark Side, exploiting new facets of the mystical essence of the galaxy. Collectively, this spectrum of interpretations of teachings are known as The Dark Paths of Scholae Palatinae. In addition to the developmental study, a behaviorial culture - of active rolemodels - has bloomed into fruition. This social culture have been given the highest of honors in the Clan: the honorific Dark Paladin.
The Dark Paths
- Main article: The Dark Paths of Scholae Palatinae
With the growth of the Royal Clan there have been several shifts in the traditional paradigms of how the Clan's members utilize the Force. The continuous debate of 'how' the Force is meant to be used is paramount; however, no path is restricted. There are members that utilize the Dark Side to enhance the art of war, some study the purity of the source, while others have expounded their philosophy on the Force - melding it with other societal beliefs. No technique is more powerful than another, as each presents a select range of skills and differences that create a balance. In the end, each member must walk their own path that will empower them to serve the Darkness.
The Dark Paladins
- Main article: Dark Paladins of Scholae Palatinae
Chosen by the Consul, or Emperor of the Cocytus System, the Dark Paladins are amongst the most outstanding members of the Clan. Serving as Role Models of high activity and Clan ethos, these revered members are an elite fraternity given an extraordinary honor and responsibility to uphold the values of Scholae Palatinae. During times of war, the Consul will either task his Paladins with individual missions or send them to the front lines as wartime Officers.
The Titles of Nobility & Command
- Main article: Scholae Palatinae Titles of Nobility
Dubbed the "Royal Clan" through their heritage and history, Scholae Palatinae has established a foothold in the Cocytus System as mystical warriors and leaders of the government. With affiliation to this elite sect of political power, the individuals of the Clan are granted official titles upon their elevation to the rank of Dark Jedi Knight. It is at this point, based on the merit of their actions, that the members are awarded honor points towards elevations within the Royal Clan with varying titles of Nobility derived from the culture of Judecca - the Scholae Palatinae home world.
Military
- Main article: Scholae Palatinae Military
The standing military of the Cocytus System is broken into three elements: Militia, Fleet of Scholae Palatinae and Legions of Scholae Palatinae. Each branch is highly regarded for their skills in warfare; though, each element is uniquely different in the way it is deployed and managed. As a combined force they are designated the Military of Scholae Palatinae - based on Imperial Rule and Tradition - the divisible elements can be positioned and commanded with greater ease.
Presiding as Overlord of the Legions & Clan Fleet is the Emperor's Right-Hand: The Grand Marshal. This is the highest rank one can attain within the Military, beyond the Emperor himself, and is seen as the Chief Military Expert and Leader within the Cocytus System.
Militia
The standing Army, or Martial Law, of each planet is entrusted to their Field Marshal: The King, or Queen, of the planet. The Field Marshall is entrusted with ten legions of common soldiers. These are warriors that have signed into a professional army; however, they still have not committed themselves to the zealous nature of the Royal Legions. Thus, they are profecient, yet still hold reservations about open warfare. The largest standing order of the Militia is to police the system, leaving the Naval Forces and Legions free to execute the Emperor's bidding.
Elements of the Militia
The most fundamental element within the Militia is the cohort: a grouping of one hundred (100) soldiers. The exception is the First Cohort, whom is under the direct control of the Legion's Commanding Officer. This cohort is, generally, larger than the standard cohorts; possibly, double the standard 100 soldier element. When the First Cohort is joined with the additional cohorts it becomes designated as a Legion of Cocytus (or their respective homeworld; i.e. Legion of Antenora). Command of multiple Legions, or the Superior Officer, is the Field Marshall. This Officer is tasked with the maintenance, recruitment, outfitting and direction of no less than five (5), one thousand (1000) soldier Legions.
Organization of a Militia Legion:
- Legion: 1000 Troops
- Cohort: 100 Troops
- Century: 50 Troops
- Contubernium: 10 Troops
The Need for Militia
A standing militia was created upon each planet's surface before the Yuuzhan Vong invasion as a token, or ceremonial, guard of the acting Planetary Ruler. Yet, after the Reclamation of the Cocytus System, the new rulers were ordered - by then Consul Phoenix Olkyssagh d'Tana Palpatine - to maintain a standing Army at all times. With these additional troops, armed and trained, the Legions of Scholae Palatinae would be free to act when the time came.
Purpose of the Militia Legions:
- Bolsters military depth during times of Galactic War
- Tasked with maintaining Law and Order upon the planets
- Commanded by the Field Marshal or King/Queen of a Planet
Chain of Command
While the standing armies, or Militia, or each planet falls under the direction of the planetary ruler - the King or Queen - the Emperor and his Grand Marshal remain the superior officers. In addition to the Emperor & Grand Marshal, the Surface Marshal - the Quaestor of a respective planet - and their Judge - the Aedile assigned to the respective Quaestor - also remain above the Field Marshal in the Chain of Command.
Militia Chain of Command:
- Emperor
- Grand Marshal
- Surface Marshal
- Judge
- Field Marshal
- Legion Commander
The Fleet of Scholae Palatinae
- Main article: The Fleet of Scholae Palatinae
The Naval Forces of the Cocytus System fall under a modified Imperial Navy protocol. The modification allows for the respective leaders, or appointed Officers, to issue commands that would - under normal circumstances - be outside of the Chain of Command. The exception is for the Leaders of Scholae Palatinae and its attached Houses: Caliburnus, Acclivis Draco & Dorimad Sol. However, due to their minute size - in comparison to a Galactic Empire Fleet - the Captains of the presiding vessels have established a Chain of Command based on Strategic value of their Capital Ship.
Chain of Command
The Naval Chain of Command:
- Emperor
- Grand Marshall
- Dark Paladin
- Surface Marshal
- Judge
- Fleet Admiral
- Ship Captain
While a loose hierarchy has been established by the individual commanders of the Clan Fleet, it is roughly based on the military value or rank of the ship they command. Thus, the Captain of the Excidium II rules the Navy de facto - if removed from the regular Chain of Command. This hierarchy is utilized when the ships are unable to get orders from the Clan Fleet Admiral, Grand Marshal or Emperor.
The Naval Chain of Command:
- Nebula-class Star Destroyer: Excidium II (Flagship of the Fleet)
- Imperial-class Star Destroyer Mark II: Warspite (Command ship of the Fleet)
- Imperial-class Star Destroyer Mark II: Indomitable
- Majestic-class Heavy Cruiser: Adenn
- Majestic-class Heavy Cruiser: Basilisk
- Majestic-class Heavy Cruiser: Fury
Scholae Palatinae Corps
- Main article: Scholae Palatinae Corps
There is a distinct element to space combat that can either ensure the success or failure of a battle plan. This lies in the strategy, effectiveness and overall preparation of starfighter pilots. It is through the grit and determination of these fighter elements that a battle can sway from desperation to a legendary feat.
The Scholae Palatinae Corps was created in an effort to ensure the continued success of the Clan's Naval Forces during the reformation of the Fleet. At the insistence of then Proconsul, Phoenix Olkyssagh Palpatine, and then Quaestor of Caliburnus, Thran Occasus, the Corps were created under the rule of Consul Braecen Kaeth. It was dictated that they would co-op with the Naval Forces, but maintain an elusive identity of their own.
The best candidates were then accepted into the Academy upon Judecca and trained to handle a vast array of flight duties. The Cadets were often forced to fly mundane missions or transport personnel; however, once they had paid their dues, they were inducted into full flight status. Upon attainment of flight status, an individual is then transferred to one of the Fighter Corps elements and assigned a ship.
Chain of Command
Retaining an elusive identity, while coordinating with Naval Forces, strains the normal requirements of the Chain of Command. In an effort to remove concerns, and questions, about whom's orders to follow in combat, the following structure was set in place - while in combat.
The Corps Chain of Command:
- Emperor
- Grand Marshal
- Fleet Commander
- Corps Commander
- Division Commander
- Wing Commander
Legions of Scholae Palatinae
- Main article: Legions of Scholae Palatinae
Scholae Palatinae literally translates as "Palace Guard." Thus, the members of the Clan share a common ancestry, or roots, to those whom served the Reborn Emperor on Byss as his Force-adept Guardians - blunt tools to execute his will. To augment what the Scholae Palatinae lacked in numbers, the Emperor awarded them command of thousands of Storm Trooopers (The Legions of Scholae Palatinae) to assist in the execution of his machinations. When the Reborn Emperor and his Adepts fell, the Scholae Palatinae - with the Storm Troopers in tow - departed into the Outer Rim. Without resources and stable leadership, the Clan soon found its way to the Dark Brotherhood and became one of its integral parts in the pursuit of the Final Way. For countless years, the Clan would use its military might to subjugate star systems and influence the outcome of battles in the Brotherhood.
Organization of the Legions
It would be under Emperor Dakari's infinite wisdom, that the power of command would be vested to his liege lords of each House - The Quaestors - a Regiment each. Yet, he master-minded a nefarious scheme that granted his Right-Hand the honor of being the Grand Marshal and Lord of All Legions. Thus, empowering the House Leaders with superior military control, training and superior troops. For, only the strongest of warriors can enlist as soldiers of the Scholae Palatinae Legions - generally being trained for multiple years and given the highest grade of military armor and weapons. As the old Troopers perished, their replacements were the near-equivalent of the Imperial Storm Troopers, but a daunted military, and political, asset; both within the Cocytus and Antei systems... The Legions of Scholae Palatinae, a force to be feared and respected.
Organization of the Legions:
- Squad: 9 Troops
- Platoon: 38 Troops
- Company: 152 Troops
- Legion
- Regiment
- Battlegroup
- Army
Chain of Command
The number of enlisted troops fluctuates from fifteen thousand (15,000) to sixty thousand (60,000) military-ready soldiers, that have been given an assignment within the Palace Guard's Army. The original standard was maintained until the Yuuzhan Vong occupation of the Cocytus System, were each Legion numbered near a thousand (1,000) warriors and was broken into military standards; though, the number of elements and the amount of soldiers was based on the exact number of Officers available to command. Once the Reclamation - from Vong rule - of the Cocytus System was complete, the newly appointed Emperor - Phoenix Olkyssagh d'Tana Palpatine - sought to bolster his forces to prevent future invasions. The exact numbers are still in flux as the scours the galaxy, recruiting warriors from all walks of life. However, maintaining Dakari's model, he ensured that each Planet was guarunteed one Regiment; that could house up to four Legions. These Regiments - not stationed upon Judecca - would fall under the command of the Surface Marshal (Quaestor) and their corresponding Judge (Aedile). Though the Grand Marshal (Proconsul) and Emperor (Consul) would retain the power to rule through the Chain of Command.
The last heirarchal position of Scholae Palatinae, that often goes unnoticed, is the Judge of the Scholae Palatinae. The vaunted, and feared, independent military warriors of the Clan - the Judges are tasked with enforcing the will of the Surface Marshal amongst the troops. Often, they act as rear guards, or lead the charge while the Surface Marshal rallies troops, and directs the flow of battle. Each Judge is granted the authority to assume control of a Regiment, when necessary, but must relinquish control when a higher ranking officer intervenes. They are, most generally, the most capable of Commanders whom have been tasked with a mission of making a difference.

Allies and Enemies
Due to the Imperial nature of the Clan, it is not surprising that it is largely centered on improving itself and expanding its borders, knowledge and prowess. Thus, the borders of Scholae Palatinae are most often closed to outside Clans due to the Clan's natural isolation from outside influence and attacks. This creates a diplomatic quandry as the Clan will most often disregard or blatantly ignore the suggestions from other Clans.
In fact, it has been suggested that the Clan will only lay down its arms for the highest ranking Dark Councilors: The Herald, Master At Arms, Head Master, Seneschal, Deputy Grand Master and Grand Master. Because of this unwillingness the Clan has found itself as a black sheep without any staunch Allies, but a trio of Enemies, while neutrally aligned to pair of Clans.
Allies
None
Neutral
Formerly aligned with the Clan named after the Dark Lord Naga Sadow, the members of Scholae Palatinae respect the altruistic nature of the Clan and the common courtesy they share within one another's presence.
While the Royal Clan has always placed its sights upon the most dominant Clan of the Brotherhood, it is based on respect and not hostility. The professional manner in which Taldryan conducts its affairs is most admirable; however, personal differences amongst members creates conflicts and turmoils when the Clans are convened.
Enemies
The sworn enemies of Clan Scholae Palatinae. The hostilities run to a deep seeded hatred that was spawned with the Royal Clan was once stripped of its clanhood and delegated to serve as a House of Arcona. A series of cruel injustices scarred the members of Scholae Palatinae; however, it gave them the strength to break free from their Masters and claim the honor of being a Clan, once again.
Scholae Palatinae was once aligned with both elements of Satal Keto and Exar Kun; however, with widespread, rampant changes in the infrastructure and tradition of the new Clan, Plagueis, a chasm was birthed between the two Clans. It is believed that Braecen Kaeth still harbors a strong grudge against the Clan he helped birth, who in turn disowned the Son of Plagueis - thus creating a wall, intersecting open communication between the Clans.
Once neutral factions, the Clan Tarentum delivered a political blow - inducing turmoil within Scholae Palatinae - during the Sixth Great Jedi War. This event would send a shockwave through the Clan and begin a temporary time of strife that threatened to rip the Clan apart. For these reasons, the member of Scholae Palatinae are still hesitant towards an open, neutral relationship with the members of Tarentum.
Typical Clan Actions & Reactions
Fictional
Actions
Overly aggressive, once the gears of war have begun to turn and public opinion has been swayed in the mob's favor, the Members of Clan Scholae Palatinae will unite behind a single banner - going all in - with little, or no, apprehension about the possible short comings of the current course of action.
The Clan is prone to sitting on its haunches and meticulously reviewing the current turmoil of the Brotherhood and abroad (Imperial Sector, New Republic, etc.). Once a potential weakness is found, the Disciples of Palpatine will delve deeply into the conflict seeking out a full understanding of the situation.
Reactions
Known to isolate itself, Clan Scholae Palatinae will, in most cases, close its borders to outside influences at the first sign of trouble - internal or external - and begin evaluating the proper course of action to bring about the resolution that serves the Clan best.
Once a violation of peace has been violated, the Members of Scholae Palatinae will counter with a rapid, retalitory strike. This over-zealous nature to defend their territory, members and knowledge has drawn them into direct confrontation several times over the course of their history.
Real Life
Actions
Scholae Palatinae continuously finds itself working to advance in three dynamic directions: Clan Advancement, Character Development & Comradery.
- Comradery: The members of the Clan continuously foster a family-like nature with their fellow members. It is very rare that inside conflict or turmoil pulls at the Clan's strings - In fact, it is most often the case that fellow members are over zealous in the defense of their Clanmates when outside antagonists begin to attack a member. This sort of relationship is strongly built through communication via the Clan E-mailer, Internet-Relay Chat (IRC) and the Clan Conclave.
- Clan Advancement: The combined Clan Leadership in conjunction with the Elders of the Clan (Most of which reside upon the Senate) are tasked with the development and advancement of Scholae Palatinae. This ranges from a series of large and small projects (i.e. Clan History, Planetary Descriptions, etc.), providing mentorship (Envoy & Master/Student Program, Tutelage of Leaders, etc.) and providing stimulating, vigorating competitions (House Feuds, Clan Feuds, Monthly Topics, etc.). The goal is to always make progress, working towards full functionality.
- Character Development: It is the hope that every member will advance their character through participation, activity and initiative through Clan Scholae Palatinae. Whether a member strives through competitions, Antei Combat Center, Leadership or Gaming - it is the Summit's hope that every member will strive to advance their Character History, Dossier and communication with other characters. This is most generally, though not exclusively, attained through specific competitions, run-ons and in-character discussions/adventures.
Reactions
The reactions of the Clan members is largely instinctive and based on the 'actions' that are instilled as a member progresses through the Brotherhood via CSP. It is our hope that members will stand loyal, devout and courageous in the face of adversity... and if they are ever cornered or feel trapped, that they will retreat to the confines of Scholae Palatinae for protection, advice or criticism.
If a member violates the Code of Conduct, however, they will be punished. Right action is considered the core principle of being a member. Whenever a member violates this Code, it will be acted upon by the Clan Leaders - though the level of correction will be oft based on the individual's sincerity.
In short, Disciples of Palpatine will not rise (or stoop) to their antagonists, unless those individuals are grievously violating the core principle - right action - that the Clan holds dearly. This bond is attained through sincere interest and devotion to one's self, House, Clan and the Brotherhood. All of which is attained through the comradery and friendships that are forged within the Clan.
