The Entar family is a group of Dark Jedi in the Brotherhood. They have been a source of many great leaders of Clan Arcona as well as symbols of strength on the Dark Council. The current family consists of Timeros Caesus Entar, Strategos Thanatos Entar Arconae, and Legorii Kryotek Entar. Reformed in 30 ABY, the family is currently once again on the rise.
Genesis
Origins
The Entar family originated on a primitive planet of Naga Sadow's Sith Empire, seeking to be populated by ragtag refugees from Coruscant seeking to form their own distinct identity. The exact location and date of founding are obscured by the mists of time, but Entar historians have estimated that the family began a thousand years after the formation of the Republic. The group faced disaster from the outset. Their primitive hyperdrive malfunctioned when translating out of hyperspace, and the ship crashed, killing the majority and cutting off the survivors from the rest of Galactic Civilization, a state that would persist for thousands of years.
The remainder soon lost what little technology they had left, regressing to a semi-feudal state and soon losing even their history. Much later, archaeological findings confirmed the above hypothesis but for a time, the history of the planet’s population was quite the mystery to those aware of its existence.
The name Entar first appeared as a distinct name some five thousand years in the past. From what meager sources of information are available, it can be surmised that this family gained power through a palace coup, and took their name from an orchid growing within the region that caused hallucinations and was used in various religious rites.
Dark rumors surrounded the Entar Dynasty from the beginning. Insanity was a frequent occurrence amongst their members, and there where whispers of Human sacrifices to dark gods that enabled the family to wield black magic. In the modern day, it seems reasonable to assume that the original Dynasty was merely a lineage of Force Users, and that the ‘Gods’ they worshiped were no more than the figment of unhealthy minds. Yet, the existence of similar beings encountered by, and supposedly at the origin of, the Order of the Krath tells us that, perhaps, the Entar insanity was effect rather than cause. This remains uncertain.
A Lust for Blood
What is known for certain is that the Entar Dynasty performed Human sacrifices. Within the deepest chambers of their original keep was a well, wherein the Dynasty drained the blood of its victims, burning the flesh in a funeral pyre and using the ash and bone as the mortar and pestle to deepen the well.
This dark side of the Dynasty stood in stark contrast with their public image which was refined, aristocratic, and ambitious. Indeed, all evidence points towards the Dynasty’s members being expert inveiglers and manipulators, and their claimed territory grew rapidly. While retaining their original keep, and the vileness it represented, the Entars spread through their planet. By the time the Sith Empire contacted the planet, it was itself known as Entar, and was under the rule of a single Emperor.
The Dynasty wasted no time surrendering to the Sith and petitioning to join and aid the Empire in return for modern technology. They accepted a Sith governor and effectively ceded control over most major rulership functions, retreating to Wellspring Keep and becoming little more than figureheads.
For nearly a thousand years, the Dynasty remained stable, growing in size if no longer in territory. Yet its growth in members was also harmful: deprived of a worthy target, the Dynasty turned upon itself. Politics, assassinations and duels became the way the Dynasty’s members attempted to reach to the top. Within the bloated hall that still held the original Well, the Dynasty’s members called on successively darker forces, and the landscape around the Keep began to reflect its masters, turning into a wasteland of craggy rocks and dust-swept plains.
And then, something changed. A threshold had been overcome. Centuries of daily sacrifices had awakened something within that horrid well. Something that reflected the Entars’ own twisted ethos. Something powerful, yes: majestic even. But also something vile. Something hungry.
It is not known where the madness first struck, but it struck harshest and most famously in then-Emperor Suven Austerius Entar. As the Well came to life, the family began to tear itself apart, and Emperor Austerius sacrificed many of his own kin to the Well in succession. Family legend suggests he was awarded immense boons for this early show of devotion, but if so, modern history does not tell. Within two weeks, over ninety percent of the Entar family had been erased from existence, blood dripping into what was now called the Well of Darkness.
But, as the remaining Entars slowly came to their senses and realized their new predicament as servants, they also became aware of another, dreadful truth: The Well’s taste of Force Sensitive souls had left it craving for more, and they were dangerously close to running out.
And so, with a desperation born of madness, the Entars turned towards the Sith Empire.
A Dark Era
Rebellion
It is not entirely certain how the Entar remnants managed to convince their planet that rebellion was a good idea. Given their relative weakness and long history of association, the Sith presence was almost sure to be impossible to erase. The Dynasty’s main advantage was a strong cultural uniformity, which had not been strongly dented even by the long period of Sith association. They also had received an institutional respect on the planet, and controlled much of the economy through various business holdings. When the war broke out, the Entar Dynasty was able to shield its population from the worst effects of galactic isolation.
The initial assaults were against the Dark Jedi themselves, in an attempt that was nothing more or less than a raid to obtain their sacrifices. The retaliation saw Sith troops landing on the planet, only to be subsequently repelled through a combination of political assassinations and guerrilla warfare. And, all the while, the Entar family traveled the stars, scouting out nearby Sith worlds and abducting the Dark Jedi.
The Sith would have almost certainly crushed the Entar family had not the rivalry between Naga Sadow and Ludo Kressh broken out into full-fledged combat at the time. The Entars were lost in the disarray, fighting against merely a sector’s worth of resources rather than half a galaxy’s. And so, by dint of luck and hostile lack of cohesion, the Dynasty survived. By the time the Sith were once again a cohesive and centrally controlled group, the Entars had dug in too deeply, and fought off successive attempts to reclaim the lost planet.
Moreover, the Entars had found a new purpose amongst the Lords of the Sith. Since the family fought not by overt warfare but by political assassination, there was little harm done to the actual industrial or military strength of the surrounding region. Their sole danger was political, and the clever Sith soon found a way to make use of this. By maneuvering their enemies onto the murderous front lines of the Entar Rebellion, they all too often had an elimination taken care of, cleanly and without implications. It was a controversial arrangement, but many of the most powerful –and hence, ambitious and most likely to use said method- Sith Lords strongly sanctioned its use. All too often ,the critics who wished to see the Dynasty squashed were themselves placed on the front lines and ordered to ‘take care of it’ themselves, with predictable results.
Eventually, the Entar Rebellion became almost, but not quite, an accepted fact of life for the Sith, more useful in its insurgence than it ever was in its service. Occasional crackdowns still occurred, and the Entars have been forced to ‘live off their own’ several times, on one occasion for nearly a decade. By the nadir of its many ups and downs, the family had fewer than five members; at its apex, over a thousand.
However, as the frontlines waned the Entars spread out their desires for Dark Jedi. The Sith nearing the front were growing weaker, and so the Dynasty branched out into hired abductions, spreading across Sith space like a cancer. The sacrifices increased as they were hired with increasing frequency under a great many pseudonyms. Yet always, always, the Entar family stalked the Sith Empire. Not out of opposition to the Sith’s dark ideals, but as a group equal in malice if far weaker in strength.
However, this in turn attracted the attention of the Republic. For centuries, the Entar family had been capable of using Sith hegemony as a shield. As an isolated backwater, the little group had been cloaked in shadows, with only faint whispers reaching to the Jedi. And, as the Entars spread, whispers they remained...but now, they were ubiquitous, and the Republic heard a great many stories regarding this odd little cult at the edge of known space.
The Rule of Zero
To the Sith, the Battle of Ruusan was nearly the end. To the Entar Dynasty, it was scarcely less so. As the Sith were hunted to extinction, the Family knew that the Republic would never accommodate them as would the Sith Empire: they would be destroyed like the Sith, and the Well might at last run dry. Moreover, even if survival was possible, the Well’s hunger could no longer be sated as easily as could in its early history. It would still accept regular sacrifices, and would gladly gobble up the Jedi. But its demand, its whispers within every Entar’s heart, was for the souls of Dark Jedi. This situation was unacceptable: the Entar Dynasty must survive and escape detection. Harsh measures were necessary.
And so, where the Sith were all but annihilated, becoming a group of but two Dark Jedi, the Entars, then ruled by Terilin Malacantus Entar decided on an even more extreme measure. As the Republic steamrolled the remaining Sith, the Entar family sent out many of its very best assassins. This time, however, their mission was twofold: one, they were to impregnate as many females as was possible, preferably in a manner not to rouse attention. Two, they were to spread many false manuscripts ‘explaining’ the origin of the Entars amongst both the populace and the Jedi. The success of both operations was tremendous: the Entars had several thousand off-world children, and over a hundred false documents, leading to at least five false theories to explain the Entar history, as well as sufficient false evidence to make each direction seem plausible.
And then, when their work was done, the assassins went back to their home planet, where the family turned the orbital weaponry on its own populace before crashing the ships to the ground. Within twenty-four hours, all of the planet’s inhabitants had died, fueling an obscene ritual going on beneath Wellspring Keep. Emperor Malacantus sacrificed all of his remaining family members, including himself, in an elaborate ritual. Somehow, the ritual succeeded, and the Well...disappeared. Disappeared completely, as it was pulled physically into the substance of the Dark Side, with only a sliver of reality protecting it from being utterly consumed in that maelstrom. Somehow, and only barely, it worked.
And so the Entars disappeared from the annals of the Jedi, and the remaining Sith, now bound by the Rule of Two, soon forgot about a minor, unimportantly eclectic cult of assassins and rebels.
Contemporary History
Enahropes and the Well
If the Dark Jedi had forgotten about the Well, however, the Well had not forgotten about the Dark Jedi. Now separated from physical reality, the Well had lost its hold over the House of Entar, but not its hunger. Like a vile siren’s song, the Well called out to the Dark Jedi of the Galaxy, spreading dreams of unspeakable power in the minds of those who would use the Dark Side, and so sow the seeds for their destruction. It did not happen often, but every few years, a Dark Jedi, somewhere, would feel the dream and begin to exhibit strange Force Powers, and a knowledge of many a strange Force ritual. For a time, they would be strong, or at least unexpectedly diverse with their powers, but then the madness would set in. Not much later, the Dark Jedi would conduct a strange ritual while activating a ship’s hyperdrive engine, and would never be heard of again.
For centuries, the Well took its victims in this manner, always careful not to thin the herd too much, but also often enough. As its dark tentacles clutched around the Galaxy, the well grew strong, and the situation persisted until after Endor, when the Well lured in a man called Enahropes.
When the Well first called Enahropes, his history had already been shrouded. While he had always been an outgoing man, there is really very little known about Enahropes’ early history beyond his first name. The most common theory is that the First Entar himself rose from a planet within the old Sith Empire, although it is now known where. It is true that Enahropes has had at least one younger brother (who also joined the Entar family) who was known to hail from such an area.
Other theorists claim this to be a ruse, and instead point at Coruscant or a similar core world as Enahropes’ origin. The First Entar was decidedly urbane and well-acquainted with the Empire. Some of the more extreme theorists even believe that Enahropes was an illegitimate child of the Emperor himself!
The final and most controversial theory states that Enahropes was, in actuality, a former Jedi of the Jedi Order, who went into hiding at the dawn of the Empire and fell at some point thereafter. This is often hotly contested by the Entar family themselves, who claim that the Jedi Temple holds no such record. Why, exactly, the Entars would deign to check such a rumor is a matter best left unasked.
Be as it may, the First Entar was ensnared by the Well, as many others before him. And, like many others, he eventually performed the disastrous combination of hyperdrive and Force ritual that took him out of physical space. And, like all the others, he eventually landed on an empty patch of land while the Dark Side itself whirled about him in mad ecstasy, and he saw the place that had once been the Well of Darkness, but was now an inverted pyramid of bones.
As Enahropes descended into the upturned Ziggurat, he saw the those of all those who had come before, their power stolen and personality eroded by age upon age of madness. Not even the greatest of the Entars of yore remained, instead being fully absorbed into the Well’s unthinking hunger.
And, as the Dark Jedi finally came to the very nadir of the ziggurat, he saw the pool of blackened, rotting blood. Join us, the pool’s many voices seemed to whisper. Feed us. And, like all others before, Enahropes jumped into the Well. But Enahropes was not like all the others. As he entered the Well, the elder ritual from so long ago flared up, and the many fractured souls recognized something: Enahropes was one of them. He was a descendant, if a far one, of the ancient Entars, and the blood within him told the Well that its new servant had, at last, arrived. With a wrenching of space itself, the First Entar was spat from the Well and back to normal space, still in his ship. But now, Enahropes knew his history, and his mission: to found a new Entar Dynasty.
Rebuilding the Dynasty
Enahropes took on the name Enahropes Teriad Entar as he began to spread his ideals. The Well had given him several powers. One, that every Dark Jedi slain by him would have its soul taken by the Well. And two, to send a worthy candidate to the Well to become an Entar, themselves. The first people to be so honored were the Arconans, Timeros Caesus and Paladorion. Each eagerly took on the family name, and the group grew quickly in size, coming to include Karrad and Selket Entar, Enahropes’ brother and wife, respectively, as well as Strategos Thanatos Entar. Later permanent additions to the family were James and Cyberguy. Soon, the Entars were among the Brotherhood’s greatest families, having two members on the Dark Council.
The Exodus hit the Entar family hard. Enahropes lost a brother in the infighting, and while he stayed with the Brotherhood, Selket was later convicted of, and executed for, criminal acts against the Brotherhood. While some members joined at times –including a third Dark Council member- the Entars had already declined much in influence within the Brotherhood, preferring to pursue personal projects out of its jurisdiction. At long last Enahropes, while still officially the leader of the Entars, retreated almost completely from the Brotherhood and turned over its leadership to the other members.
Not long thereafter, the Family declined further back as its new members disappeared into inactivity, and grew taciturn as a whole. Recently, however, things have been looking better for the Entars: a new member joined the Brotherhood, and Timeros started the Entar Reformation in hopes of reorganizing and reinvigorating the Family.
The Entars Today
Today’s Entars are a much different lot from the original Entar Dynasty. They are properly referred to as the Entar Family Clan as laid down by Enahropes himself. While not as active as they once were, they remain a powerful and respected faction within Arcona, being the second-oldest Family to originate in the Brotherhood (after the Cantors).
There are three Brotherhood entities the Entars remain intimately associated with: Clan Arcona, the Antei Combat Center, and the Krath Order. Every current Entar has had one or more leadership functions within Clan Arcona at a time. Enahropes himself was Quaestor of House Qel-Droma when he founded the Entar Family Clan. Subsequent to that, all Entars have followed in his footsteps in some form or another, including no less than three Consuls, and two di Tenebrous Arconae. While Enahropes has gone on to Clan Tarentum, many Entars privately consider him to be as good a Clan member as any other. It should also - and this is perhaps more disconcerting - be noted that the Abyss that lies at the heart of Arcona’s Shadowcrafting is disturbingly similar to known descriptions of the resting place of the Well of Darkness.
The second connection is that with the Order of the Krath. Nearly every single of the Entar Family Clan has belonged to the Krath Order. Again, this was partly Enahropes’ design: he himself led a Krath House when the Entars were founded, but this also has a more ancient bias in the ritualism of the original Entar Dynasty. From their very inception, the old Entars specialized in ritual Force use, and this has not diminished over time.
The final connection lies with the Antei Combat Center. Paladorion Teranioklon Entar was the first to propose a similar if different idea about the center for Arcona alone, and the Combat Master of the short-lived Arcona Arena. When the Center went Brotherhood-wide as the Krath Combat Center, it was designed by James and CyberGuy, and manned primarily by Timeros (who would later become the Second Combat Master of the KCC). As it stands, no less than four Entars stand on the ‘honored staff’ list of the Antei Combat Center.
All in all, while the Entar Family Clan is currently in a lull of activity, it has historically had a tremendous influence on both their Clan and, through the Combat Center, the Brotherhood as a whole.
The Entar family is also a relatively high-powered and high-stationed family, with three Elders and four Equites amongst its ranks, as well as no less than five Dark Councilors over time.
Society and Culture
Nomenclature and Communication
The standard expression for the names of the Entars is (First Name) (Chosen Middle Name) Entar. Timeros was initially named just that, and later chose ‘Caesus’ as his middle name. Hence Timeros Caesus Entar. However, in formal reference, it is the middle, rather than the last name to be used. Hence Strategos is properly referred to as ‘Master Thanatos’ or similar.
The Entar Family Clan also has its own tongue called Entariad or, more colloquially, Entar Medley. As the name suggests, the tongue is a combination of several languages, most of which are dead. Unlike most other Entar projects, this one is a relatively recent invention, finding its origin somewhere in the early days of Sarin’s reign by the joint efforts of Timeros and Strategos. Entariad’s languages used are all extinct and based upon multiple, grammatically complex syntaxes and cadences. The result is so complex that even its creators do not fully understand some of the more esoteric sentences. The language is also, at least in part, a joke, as several of the more common sentences can be directly translated to Mando’a as various insults impugning the Mandalorian’s lineage, martial skill, and marital virtues. Legorii Kryotek Entar, to name one, has occasionally referred to the language as B’ull’’sh’it’a (the exact number of apostrophes is uncertain, since they seem to be both ever increasing and extremely audible).
Goals and Visions
The only true goals unifying the Entars are obtaining more power for the Family Clan, and somehow accessing the location of the Well of Darkness. While each member has received a vision of the Well, none save Enahropes have ever been to it in the flesh, and when his initial madness faded, the First Entar could no longer remember the rituals by which he had initially accessed it. Indeed, using this ritual may require an active ‘guidance’ from the Well to reach it at all.
Nevertheless, research continues in that direction, as well as several others. For one, the Family Clan has noted that the Well’s reach seems to be expanding. While everyone slain by the Entars falls into the Well, more recently this fate befell some of those who died near the Family, as well. The Well, always present within the users’ souls, is particularly strong during moments of Dark Jedi deaths. This has led the Entars to believe that a sufficiently large influx of Dark Jedi could, in theory, open up a gateway to the Well – perhaps even permanently so.
The results have been obvious: Many Entars specialize in death. Strategos has several thousand confirmed combat kills, with a Cluster of Fire to prove his mettle. As noted before, the Entars stood at the very cradle of the Antei Combat Center, of which Timeros is still an occasionally active participant. Finally, the Entars are, to a man, extremely supportive of Arcona’s Shadow Oath, and are known to have taken several such slayings upon themselves. Other, more extreme positions include the belief that slaying either an entire Clan or the Dark Council could offer results. Opinions differ on what to do once the Well is finally found. See #Traditions and Factions for more information.
Internal Structure
The Entar family calls its internal organization the hierarchy, and envisions it as a tetrahedron, with each ascending line of the tetrahedron representing a ‘lineage’ of at most three Entars, with three different ‘levels’ on each lineage. The top, where all three lines join, represents Enahropes. The lineages, with members, are as follows.
- 1. The first lineage, or the lineage of Caesus. This lineage includes, from top to bottom, Timeros and Paladorion. This lineage is also known as the Line of the Duelist, as both Timeros and Paladorion have strong connections to the ACC.
- 2. The second lineage, or the lineage of Thanatos. This lineage includes Strategos and, more recently, Legorii. This line does not yet have a moniker, as Legorii still needs to grow into his power and reputation.
- 3. The third lineage, or the lineage of Lucius. This lineage includes James and Cyberguy. This lineage is also known as the Line of the Architects, having built much of the infrastructure of the original Combat Centers.
These lineages originally formed as the groups of Entars that joined the Brotherhood. Each connecting line has room for a third member. All three of the top members have had their second as either a student or close associate. Two things stand out in this. First, all of the line namers have been Consul of Arcona at one point or another. Secondly, the hierarchy is not based upon rank, but upon seniority. Both Timeros and James have been outranked by their own students for a time.
All internal decisions happen by a simple majority vote, save any changes to the rule structure, which requires a two-thirds majority. The quorum for any rule changes is three members (note members, not votes) present. It is the responsibility of the Administrarch (see below) to ensure that all Entars are notified of official meetings. Officially, each member has one vote. However, each member of a lineage is assumed to be speaking for his ‘lessers’ should they not be present. Hence, Enahropes, when present, is assumed to speak for all Entars not there as well as himself, and hence has their votes to use as desired. Timeros has the vote of Paladorion ‘in escrow’. If the lineage of Thanatos should obtain a third member, Strategos would speak for all three if alone. If Strategos were not present, Legorii would speak for two members if alone.
There are only three ‘positions’ on the Roll of the Entars.
The first position is that of the First Entar. This position is held by Enahropes and Enahropes alone, and makes him the official leader of the Family. He can call for a meeting at all times, and controls the family assets as well as its members. Enahropes is also not bound by faction or tradition. In recent times, Enahropes has not been active much and hence no longer issues many commands. This leads us to the second position.
The Administrarch is the functional ‘leader’ of the Entar family, although in truth he does not hold much power. He is elected for two years, in first month beginning of each even year, by instant runoff vote after being nominated by a second. It is he whom the members should contact if they wish to call a meeting, after which he is obligated to mail each member to ensure as many members as possible are contacted. However, the only time he is obliged to do so without request is in the beginning of each even year, to discuss and elect a new Administrarch, and if a vote must be held on accepting a new member into the Family Clan.
The Administrarch’s further duties include keeping account of the roll and history of the Entars, changing this document to reflect any changes in the rules, take note of meetings, and appointing someone to preside over the official meetings. The Administrarch is also, as far as the Dark Jedi Brotherhood is concerned, the official representative of the Family.
The last duty is that of the Grand Euphemist, whose duties include managing the holdings of the Entar Family Clan. His has obtained his name by the often oddly named holdings the Entar family clan possesses. The Grand Euphemist is elected at the same time as the Administrarch, under identical rules.
Traditions and Factions
The actions and positions of the Entar Family can be expressed as a three by three grid, with nine positions possible.
The first distinction is that of tradition, dependent on the part of history the Entar in question seeks to emulate. The three positions traditions are:
- 1. Stalkers. This emulates the Entars in their late history, as assassins and fighters. These members are often martially focused. Timeros is a Stalker.
- 2. Dynasts. This emulates the Entars as the rulers of a world, and their terrifying political skill at the time. Strategos is a Dynast.
- 3. Warlocks. This emulates the religious aspect of the Entars and its emphasis on ritual. Often these are the Entars with the strongest ties to the Krath Order.
It should be noted that these preferences are by no means absolute. Timeros, for example, has managed to manipulate his way to Consul despite being a Stalker, and Strategos is a martial powerhouse despite being a Dynast.
The second distinction is that of faction. The Entars are not unified in believing what must be done when the Well of Darkness is at last found.
- 1. The Obliterators believe that the Well must be destroyed. This does not necessarily mean that these Entars oppose the Well. Some believe that the Well can be absorbed or somehow used to obtain greater power. However each of these members is unified in believing that the Well is a threat to the Entars. Timeros is an Obliterator.
- 2. The Directors, as the name implies, believe that the Well can be controlled. In its growth and absorbing of Dark Jedi, they see a greater potential. They are convinced that this is possible. Strategos is a Director.
- 3. The Obedients believe that the Well must be served as did the Entars of old, and believe they can obtain its blessings once found, and sufficient souls have been sent over.
Save Enahropes, each member must choose one of both positions, such that each of the nine possible configurations is unique. As such, Timeros Caesus is the only Stalker/Obliterator. Likewise, Strategos is the only Dynast/Director. Enahropes himself is held to be above such petty distinctions, having obtained a far more complete understanding of the Well. Several members have not yet declared a preference.
Organizations
As befits its schismatic nature and goals, there are three organizations that serve the Entars, one for each tradition as well as a general informant network.
Black Water Cleaning Services: Specializing in all kinds of assassinations, it also contains an expert waste disposal division, for those occasions where leaving evidence isn’t an option.
Castro Electoral Solutions: Unlike many of the Dark Jedi, the Entar family has no hatred for democracy. In fact, the Entars love democracy. Electoral Solutions helps people ensure that the democratic process goes their way, instead of actually leaving it to the will of the people.
H. W. Jones Archaeological Society: We’ll dig up any old rubbish. Of course, there may just be ancient and potent Force artifacts in there, but somehow they always fail to make it on the list of excavated items.
