"I serve myself now, and no other. This Brotherhood of yours is nothing to me."
―Aidan Kincaid

Aidan Kincaid is a Dark Jedi[2] who had begun training as a Jedi Knight before being corrupted by the One Sith. Apprenticed to the Sith Lord known as Darth Silas, Kincaid was molded into a brutal and effective killing machine. Leashed by his master's cruelty, he was forced to kill other apprentices and act outside of the One Sith's desires to help accomplish his master's aims. Eventually, when his actions were uncovered, his master betrayed him and gave the order to exterminate him.

By chance or fate, Kincaid managed to flee the assassins sent for him, and was discovered by Jac Cotelin, who accepted him as an apprentice—a hidden disciple kept far from the Dark Brotherhood. For years, Kincaid continued his training in seclusion with either his master or a pair of heavily modified IG-100 MagnaGuards, living in the shadows of galactic society. Eventually, he was sent on missions at his master's behest. The nature of his secret apprenticeship allowed Kincaid to serve behind the scenes and complete objectives his master was unable or unwilling to dirty his hands with.

However, the Dark Crusade put an end to that anonymity. Cotelin was forced to induct Kincaid into the Brotherhood after he was discovered battling with the Grand Master against the One Sith on Dromund Kaas. Due to his combat prowess and strength in the Force, which wrought havoc in the Shadow Academy, Cotelin was eventually able to pull some strings to elevate Kincaid to the rank of Dark Jedi Master. Kincaid serves as a member of the House, Taldryan, where he remains an outsider due to his antisocial personality and the unusual situation surrounding his transfer.[2]

History prior to 37 ABY was artificially constructed by Jac Cotelin and implanted into Aidan Kincaid—the persona fabricated to replace Shadow Taldrya's physical appearance and memories. See Behind the Scenes for further information.

  • The scene is quickly overrun by members of Taldryan and (?), the joint forces fighting against the One Sith on Dromund Kaas. With no way out, Kincaid is forcibly revealed to be Cotelin's secret apprentice and a powerful Dark Jedi. Unknown members of the Voice's intelligence network apparently bore witness to the duel and reported Kincaid's existence back to their master. Cotelin says the only way for Kincaid to remain free is to join with the Brotherhood. Eventually, he'll have his chance at the One Sith.

Beginning with 37 ABY, Aidan Kincaid officially joined the Dark Brotherhood and replaced the persona of Shadow Taldrya. All events past this date are to be considered DB Canon.

The Brotherhood of Dark Jedi (37 ABY - Present)

Trials of the Shadow Academy

"This is the worst idea ever."
―Aidan Kincaid, on being sentenced to the Brotherhood's Shadow Academy[src]
The Central Library of Lyspair

With their hidden partnership revealed, Kincaid was forced by his master to join the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. Despite his combat prowess and years of experience, the superiors on the Dark Council demanded Kincaid complete the journeymen trials in the Shadow Academy. It was a point of contention between himself and the Council and one that set his time in the Brotherhood on a rough path. The training was about what he expected, which meant it was far beneath him. Kincaid was forced to endure weeks of study with recruits just awakening to their powers. The instructors—self-important windbags—made it their mission to impress upon their charges how powerful they were.[3]

To Kincaid, it was sheer torture. Eventually, after weeks of reading tomes and meditating in silence, the apprentices were finally introduced to lightsaber training. Unfortunately, Kincaid's brutal teachings at the hands of Silas and the One Sith prevented him from playing nice with the beginners. In the heat of the moment, he instigated a massive battle on the Academy's grounds and defeated dozens of instructors and students with a training lightsaber before being apprehended by members of the Grand Master's Royal Guard. In the end, he was forced before the Justicar and the Chamber of Justice for multiple charges that would most likely result in his death. Fortunately, his master was able to pull some strings and have the charges dropped. Using the circumstances surrounding Kincaid's attempt at the Academy, Cotelin was at last able to convince the Council to elevate Kincaid to the rank of Dark Jedi Master.[3]

Hunting a Killer

Template:Dialogue2

The late Orv Dessrx

Contacted by a secret society embedded within the Brotherhood, Kincaid was contracted to hunt down the killer of Herald Orv Dessrx on the infamous moon of Nar Shaddaa.[4] The mission, which should have been straightforward, turned out to be anything but. Before leaving his Karufr apartments, Kincaid was stopped by his master and discovered some curious details about the society. The investigation into the murder had been ordered nineteen hours before the Herald's death, which meant the Society had based its intelligence on a future premonition. Kincaid would land on the moon only hours after Dessrx's demise.[5]

The mystery only deepened from there. After finding the crime scene, Kincaid learned that another Jedi-committed murder had taken place earlier and not far from where Dessrx had been killed. By following the trail of rumors on the streets, Kincaid was led to a Jedi investigator who was also tracking down the killer. By convincing her he was a wayward member of the New Jedi Order, Kincaid was able to join the Jedi's investigation and learned that Dessrx had been sent to Nar Shaddaa as an assassin.[5]

After ditching the Jedi, Kincaid followed the trail left by the Herald's extraction team, and confronted a Anzati Sith Lord in the Old Duros Sector. The battle was fierce and Kincaid barely came out alive, but he learned something of Dessrx's killer. Upon returning to Antei with the little information he had acquired, Kincaid learned the identity of the killer from his master and was able to complete the mission for the Society.[5]

Revelations (rough)

"After all, you keep walking into these ambushes and dying… all in the name of the Dark Council."
―Esoteric to Kincaid on the surface of Bosthirda[src]

Tasked by his master to lead a small team of Taldryan members to retrieve Revelation, the fabled sword of the assassin, Ferran.[6]

Unfortunately, not the only people interested in the sword. The One Sith, led by the individual known as "Esoteric" have laid siege to the planet of Bosthirda. While it's unknown why the Sith want the sword, they have amassed a great force to attack the Brotherhood. Kincaid personally meets up with and fights Esoteric and discovers that the One Sith have allied with old enemies of the Brotherhood. He and his team are defeated and left for dead, but are rescued by Jac Cotelin and some Taldryan Elders.[7]

Though his master and the members of Taldryan want the sword, Kincaid merely wants a second chance at taking on the One Sith. The two groups join forces and enter the ancient city of Xlopora, fighting waves of undead creatures and Imperial troopers.[7]

Following Cotelin's visions, they eventually make their way to the hidden location of the sword, deep under the city. There, they come face-to-face with Esoteric and his minions. Kincaid, Cotelin, and Halcyon Rokir engage Esoteric, while the others handle the Sith Adepts. Battle battle battle... Things go to hell when one of their member, Tarax Eosphoros Kor draws Revelation and unleashes a deadly curse. The power threatens to destroy both Taldryan and One Sith, but Cotelin employs the dark side power of seethe to draw the malevolent energy into himself.[7]

Poisoned by the power, Cotelin barely manages to unleashed a torrid of dark side energy at Estoric, defeating the Sith Lord. Something something bombardment. Kincaid helps Cotelin and the team escapes to the surface which is being destroyed by Brotherhood naval forces. A lone (ship) recklessly braves the bombardment to pick them up and return them to the Clan Flagship, the KSD Resurgent.[7]

Kincaid endures a debriefing with the team and the upper echelons of the Clan. Cotelin cuts the meeting short, clearly hiding something from his clan mates. Kincaid follows him and the two are confronted by Keirdagh Cantor. They discover that the power Cotelin absorbed from teh curse is slowly killing him. Cotelin admonishes the two for fighting and demands that Kincaid put aside his distrust and work with Taldryan.[1] Begrudgingly, Kincaid accepts Cotelin's orders.[7]

Mortal Kombat!

"I find your loyalty to this Brotherhood lacking."
―Jac Cotelin to Kincaid, after the debriefing following the Battle of Bosthirda[src]

Physical Appearance

Aidan Kincaid is a tall, slightly built, human male in his mid-thirties. He has gaunt, angular features with high cheekbones and a sharp, hooked nose. His eyes are a piercing brown, hooded by a deep brow. His face is rough and unshaven, which speaks to his years living on the fringes of society. He has noticeable scarring on his cheeks, likely from a bladed a weapon. His wiry frame is more adept at feats of speed and dexterity rather than pure power, but he still exudes a sense of strength. He always moves with grace and cold precision. His voice is strong and commanding, somehow able to resonate with people, and contains a hint of an Imperial accent—a trait that was potentially influenced by his former master, Darth Silas.[1]

Aidan Kincaid

Kincaid wears black, form-fitting body armor comprised of small, ceramic plates designed more for style than protection. His lower half is shrouded in an ankle-length black legwrap, held together by multiple belts, which crisscross around his waist were he stows his two lightsabers. Over the ensemble, Kincaid dons a long, flowing black robe, open in the front to reveal the armor beneath. He almost always wears his hood up, casting deep shadows across his face. The notable blue trim on the armor and robe is believed to be a personal preference and helps to break up the otherwise completely black attire.[1]

Personality and Traits

"He's obviously dangerous, Jac. What the hell made you think bringing him here was a good idea?"
―Keirdagh Cantor, demanding explanations from Jac Cotelin[src]

Kincaid is an outcast. Because of his twisted past and unique upbringing, he has trouble working with groups or teams and prefers to handle matters by himself.[1] He has his own methods and tends to conflict with those wielding authority over him. Even his master, Jac Cotelin, whom he formed a close bond with was no exception.[1] This has made Kincaid unwelcome within his new home of Taldryan and he is distrusted by the leadership and Elders of the House. One will not find Kincaid "making friends" with the other members of the Brotherhood, and his personality assures none will ever try to approach him first.

Given his years spent as an assassin, Kincaid has a natural affinity for solving mysteries and uncovering hidden truths.[1] Having spent so many years isolated from others, he spends a great deal time in his own head and likes to process information quickly to create answers to problems. His analytical approach to life further alienates him from other sentients and ensures he almost always rubs someone the wrong way. He finds it more useful to exploit the emotions of others, rather than relying on his own to strengthen his powers.[1]

Kincaid has a close relation with Death. His hands are drenched in the blood of both the innocent and the malevolent, as he was forced to kill to survive. That was the way of the One Sith. However, Kincaid never became bloodthirsty. He is a pragmatist. If he deems killing is a necessity, he won't think twice about ending a life. But it will be done based on cold, hard logic not a petty, emotional response. Killing is just one of many necessary evils.[1]

Powers and Abilities

"Given the... situation within the Academy, I have convinced them to elevate you to a rank deserving of your talents."
―Jac Cotelin, informing Kincaid of his elevated status to Elder[src]

Kincaid's various apprenticeships spanned over two decades and, apart from his time with the New Jedi Order, focused on a brutal, hands-on approach to training with no regards to personal safety. Kincaid's natural aptitude for physical combat is heavily reinforced by his raw strength in the Force. He excels at augmenting himself with Amplification, pushing far beyond the limits of human endurance to achieve incredible feats of prowess in battle.[1]

Kincaid employing Amplification and the Ataru Form

Lightsaber Prowess

"This is pointless. Not one of you can stand against me."
―Aidan Kincaid, "training" against Taldryan journeyman

Kincaid is a highly skilled warrior, having spent most of his life fighting just to survive. He bolsters his natural abilities with the powers of Amplification and Precognition. It is part of his style to always be moving in combat. His actions are kinetic and acrobatic, with a focus on fighting with overwhelming offense, relying on instinct and the Force for defense.

Kincaid is a practitioner of the Ataru Form of lightsaber combat. He began his training in this style by battling one-on-one against fellow Sith Acolytes, then eventually against a pair of modified MagnaGuard droids every single day. His Sith Master believed that his power would only grow by training in realistic, life-or-death situations, which is why Kincaid honed his skills to mastery by fighting rival apprentices to the death in the catacombs beneath Korriban.

Force Powers

"Where is he from? And how the hell did he attain this level of power?"
―Rian Aslar, demanding answers about the new Taldryan recruit
Kincaid in meditation

Kincaid is exceptionally powerful in the Force, having been granted the rank of Dark Jedi Master shortly after his induction into the Brotherhood.[3] Since his early childhood, Kincaid found he was able to instinctively draw upon the Force, using it to bypass security in the Jedi ruins on Dantooine. He was able to unleash an explosive form of telekinesis to devastate a handful of Imperial Remnant assailants that attacked his village. Years of experience only enhanced this raw power, allowing Kincaid to wield powerful telekinetic attacks in close range.[1]

His early training with the Jedi may have focused on harmony with the Force, but most of that was overwritten by brutal lessons of survival, forcing him to refocus his training on combat. By channeling the raw potential of the Force through his body, Kincaid is able to amplify his melee abilities immensely. When his former master recognized his proficiency, Kincaid began a strict training regiment to improve the strength and duration of his amplification, until he was able to endure entire duels in a near-superhuman state. However, pushing the human body to such a degree was both reckless and dangerous. Side effects began with crippling exhaustion and muscle spasms, but quickly evolved into seizures, and ultimately mental blackouts. Having learned the limits of his body, Kincaid rarely pushes himself so far beyond his endurance.

Aside from the development of combat-oriented powers, Kincaid also has a great talent for the gift of Force Sense. His current master believes that Kincaid's harsh training at the hands of the One Sith helped to create a detachment between himself and others, an emotional blank slate, which makes it easier for him to form empathic bonds with other beings and even objects. He fine-tuned this power in his role as his master's secret apprentice—enforcing the Grand Master's will across the Galaxy. However, due to Kincaid's formative years spent being broken, tortured, and turned, he only ever makes use of these bonds to gain an advantage over others—both in social and combat situations.

This affinity for Force Sense also enabled Kincaid to master the art of Precognition, allowing him to instinctively predict and anticipate impending danger. Kincaid honed this ability through dozens of life or death encounters, learning to trust in guidance from the Force to protect him in battle.

Other Talents

Kincaid's strength in Force Sense made him a merciless hunter of Force-sensitives. When Darth Silas wished to eliminate a Jedi or Dark Jedi, he would often send Kincaid to track down and assassinate the target. In the field, Kincaid picked up a lot of experience investigating the whereabouts of people. By being able to get into the heads of his prey, by understanding how they think, Kincaid is that much better at hunting targets down. The psychometry aspect to his Force Sense also allows him to pick up valuable information from the fragments of "memories" he can pull from inanimate objects.

Some would call Kincaid a sociopath and, for the most part, they would be right. He has an uncanny ability for manipulation, able to delve deeply into the minds of others and expose their greatest weaknesses and fears. He applies this skill liberally when his missions require covert means of infiltration. In battle, he uses this skill to enrage, humiliate, or terrorize his opponents, creating cracks in their defenses that he is quick to take advantage of.

Due to his relationship with his current master, Jac Cotelin, the two have formed a powerful Force Bond, enabling them to sense each other across vast distances. The two are even able to communicate with each other beyond normal telepathic range, as if the Force directly links them together. Their bond also gives Cotelin the ability to keep a close eye on Kincaid and monitor his actions from a distance. When in close proximity, Kincaid and his master are able to form a Force Meld, allowing them to draw strength from each other and coordinate their movements in the heat of battle.

Equipment

Kincaid's two lightsabers

Weapons

"Master these weapons, apprentice. They will determine the length of your life."
―Darth Silas, handing Kincaid his twin lightsaber hilts
Lightsabers

When his training under Darth Silas began, Kincaid was given two, identical lightsaber hilts. The blades were crimson, in the style of all members of the One Sith. The weapons were Kincaid's only means of surviving the harsh training of the Sith, and became intrinsically linked to him. Despite being betrayed by Silas and the One Sith, Kincaid still wields the weapons he was given as a Sith Apprentice. However, upon apprenticing to Jac Cotelin, Kincaid replaced the red lightsaber crystals with ones of his own choosing. He returned to the place of his birth, revisiting the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine. Accompanied by his two MagnaGuards, Kincaid delved deep into the ruins and recovered two crystals in the shattered remains of a pair of ancient lightsabers, still in pristine condition despite their age.

The hilts are simple and elegant in design, constructed from a sharp, grey durasteel base with onyx threaded throughout the metal to form the grip. There is no discernible source of activation on the hilts. Instead, the lightsabers can only be activated by manipulation with the Force. The main blade is a brilliant, amber hue, while the secondary blade is a deep sapphire. A small, wickedly sharp blade protrudes from the base of the emitter and four smaller blades circle around the bottom.[2]

Assassin Lightsaber
The Assassin Lightaber

As part of his induction into the Dark Brotherhood, Kincaid was given the Assassin Lightsaber by his master, Jac Cotelin. This sparked no small amount of animosity with the other members of the House. The weapon had once been a prized possession of the late Shadow Taldrya. No members of Taldryan were able to understand why Cotelin was in possession of the weapon, or why he would give it to the suspicious new recruit.

The bracer of the Assassin Lightsaber is constructed with the extremely versatile durasteel, which could resist the blistering heat of the blade, ensuring minimal risk to the wielder from accidental burning during combat. The inherent strength of the alloy also gives it a measure of protection against physical attacks. However, because it was created as a reward, the weapon is plated in rare electrum, giving it a gold and silver veneer and marking it as an especially ornate and beautiful tool for killing.[8]

When equipping the blade, Kincaid often hides the flashy gauntlet under the sleeve of his outer robe, which keeps the weapon hidden and prevents it from impeding the projection of the dagger-like blade. The hidden blade is activated by quickly flexing the wrist backwards at a precise 90° angle, which gives the wearer full control over when and how it is employed in battle.

Behind the Scenes

Mysterious Facility

Aidan Kincaid is the new personality and physical form of Shadow Taldrya after he was captured and turned by the One Sith during the events of the Dark Crusade. Rather than killing Shadow and starting a new character, and explaining the sudden emergence of a new Dark Jedi Master, the character was given a blank slate ala Revan in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

This character has the same rank and general strengths of the old, but his personality is completely different. His past, which is actually created from false memories, has been re-written. Any previous relationships with Brotherhood members or units are all starting fresh from the year 37 ABY, when he "joins" the Brotherhood after the Dark Crusade as Jac Cotelin's secret apprentice.

To anyone who may want to make mention of Shadow Taldrya in their fictions and whatnot, it is widely believed he was killed in action on Rhelg. The actual story of his transformation into Aidan Kincaid is only known (fictionally) to Jac Cotelin and the NPC, Maxyn Vonnisia.

The new persona was named by members of the Old Folks' Home. The surname of "Kincaid" is based on the name of a character in the Dresden Files.
