Kodais Solatus is Rollmaster of House Plagueis. An enigmatic and reclusive figure, he generally keeps to himself and moves about the shadows. Though he has military experience, and does enjoy a good fight, Kodais prefers the scholarly pursuits of alchemy and philosophy.

Biography

Early Life (4 BBY-13 ABY)

Kodais was born the second son of Rehm and Sanlee Solatus in the city of Iziz on Onderon. He lived as most boys in Iziz did, attending school with his older brother, Daksis, and playing with his friends. He lived in a very stable home with a good mother and a very strong father. He loved his parents very much, especially his father.

Rehm Solatus

As with many Onderonians Rehm was a patriot and very proud to be Onderonian. He insisted upon only Onderonian being spoken in his home and made sure his boys learned it. He also made certain that his boys knew their history. Kodais would sit at his father's feet and listen for hours about the days of Freedon Nadd and pre-Republic Onderon. He would listen as his father told him of the Republic's treachery and how it drew their world into its many wars.

Rehm hated the Republic and the Empire. During the Clone Wars, his father, Kodais' grandfather, had fought in the Separatist Army. Later Rehm himself would also fight. In the days after the Clone Wars Rehm continued to fight for Onderonian independence with the Naddists. He would eventually lose the function of his left leg in a fight with local law enforcement years before Daksis was born. Though Rehm could no longer fight, he taught his boys his mind.

Two years after the Battle of Yavin the Rebellion bombed the Imperial munitions depot on Onderon. This only served to fuel the flames of independence for Onderon and again Rehm collaborated with the Naddists. Six years later he was arrested in front of his family by Iziz Secret Police during a raid on his own home. As the officers dragged him from his pleading wife and terrified sons he screamed to his boys, "Never forget this! Use it! Never forget!" Then he was gone. Forever.

Daksis Solatus

The loss of his father dealt a huge mental blow to Kodais. At the young age of 12 the boy knew real hate. In accordance with Onderonian tradition Daksis became the head of the family. Though Daksis was only three years older than Kodais, he became a kind of replacement father figure for the boy. Things progressed in this manner for three years before Daksis shocked both his mother and Kodais when he joined the Imperial Stormtrooper Corps.

Kodais was devastated. How could Daksis join that which their father had fought against his entire life? Just before Daksis left for basic training the family got into a fight. During the argument Kodais attacked his brother, but was beaten back. In his rage Kodais declared that he had no brother and stormed from their home. Daksis simply said goodbye to his mother and left. Another hero had been taken from him, and it was the Empire's fault.

Sanlee Solatus

A loving wife and devoted mother, the Solatus household could not have asked for a better matron. She shared her husband's vision of an independent Onderon and did not object to his teaching it to their sons. However, she didn't want her husband to get involved again. Eventually, he did and was arrested for it. She had lost the love of her life in one terrifying afternoon. The event nearly destroyed her. The only thing that kept her going was her duty to her boys and the clothing store she owned. Through routine she maintained her sanity.

However, she would never be the same again. The loss of her husband made her increasingly protective of her boys. They were the only things she had left that still connected her to Rehm. When Daksis left for Stormtrooper basic training she sank into deep depression. Kodais tried his best to help his mother maintain her store and also go to school. It was a hard time, but Sanlee finally came around.

Unfortunately for Kodais, she was even more protective and afraid that he would leave her. He knew this would be an issue in the coming years. Like his father he was a patriot and wanted to serve Onderon and its people honorably. He wanted to join the Onderonian Army. Kodais never got the chance to tell his mother of his plans. Weeks before Kodais was to enlist an official Imperial message came to their home. Daksis had been killed in action against rebels. When Kodais broke the news to his mother her psyche simply snapped and she went into a hysterical fit. Both her husband and her baby had been taken from her. Weeks of severe depression followed both for Sanlee and Kodais.

Though Daksis had been disowned by his brother, Kodais still loved him and missed him very much. Kodais dropped out of school in order to run the clothing store and try to put his mother back together. One day before Kodais left for the store his mother kissed him on the forehead and said her heartfelt goodbyes. Though this puzzled Kodais he didn't think too much of it and reciprocated her affection. That evening Kodais came home to his mother hanging from the ceiling of their home. With nothing left Kodais sold the business, their home, and the vast majority of their possessions and joined the Onderonian Army at the age of 17.

The Army (13 ABY-18 ABY)

Kodais joined the Onderonian Army as an Infantryman. Immediately after basic training he volunteered for the Commando Indoctrination Program (CIP) and was accepted. The following 12 weeks was remembered by Kodais as, "Easily the most difficult and soul churning time in my life." While training in the CIP Kodais received advanced weapons training from blaster pistols to E-WEBs to mines to rockets and everything in between. Furthermore, he was trained in airborne operations with jetpacks, repulsor packs, and "obsolete" parachutes. Integrated into the entire program was the instruction in and use of small unit infantry tactics. Upon completing the CIP he was assigned to the 9th Commando Regiment, 173rd Air Assault Division.

The Commandos

"Welcome to the suck."
―Sergeant Arvis Dyson to Kodais Solatus

Under Imperial rule Onderon was not authorized any military outside of a small planetary defensive force. After Onderon had thrown off the yolk of Imperial rule and joined the New Republic it was decided that a new Army be built. The Commandos were part of this Army.

The mission of the Commandos was to support the New Republic in its war against the Empire and protect Onderonian interests abroad. Consequently, Kodais saw considerable action against the Imperial Remnant. He saw many friends killed and wounded in nameless battles on unknown worlds against an enemy merely trying to survive. He was himself wounded in action twice during these actions. After four hard years Kodais could no longer take the lifestyle and applied for a transfer to the Iziz Beast Rider Corps.

The Beast Riders

While the Beast Riders had ceased to be a functioning arm of the Onderonian Military centuries before, Iziz maintained a small ceremonial unit for the sake of tradition. For many it was a highly sought after assignment and largely regarded as a dream job. Kodais’ buddies could hardly believe he had been accepted. Of course they good naturedly derided his orders by calling into question his courage and general manliness. However, every one of them secretly envied him and understood why he had made the request.

Unlike the Commandos there was no formal training to becoming a Beast Rider. One was merely assigned to the unit and the training came on the job. After roughly six months Kodais was fully capable of caring for and riding the monstrous drexl. Times were indeed easy in the Beast Riders. Except for the occasional demonstration or ceremony there was little to do but tend to his drexl and ride. The only time Kodais was sent off-world as a Beast Rider was to provide an escort to the Onderonian Senator to Coruscant. While on the mission Kodais and the other Beast Riders stayed in luxury on Coruscant for two weeks and only put on a single demonstration for a group of dignitaries.

Finally, after six years Kodais fulfilled his contract and was honorably discharged from the Army at the age of 22 years with the rank of Sergeant.

Personality and Physical Description

"What in the Hell is that?"
―Kodais Solatus upon seeing his first Chiss.

Personality

Kodais views himself as an Onderonian patriot and is exceedingly proud of his heritage. This has led him to some "militant" separatist activities with the objective of gaining Onderonian independence from the Republic, but nothing of any real note.

Like most Onderonians he is xenophobic. His pride in his heritage in addition to his upbringing has lead him to believe in the superiority of the Onderonians over most other sentients. He also hates the Republic, the Jedi, and the Mandalorian. He sees Onderon's current problems the fault of the Jedi and the Republic. The atrocities the Mandalorians visited upon the Onderonians is difficult for him to forget as well. He is more tolerant of the Empire though. Under the Empire, Onderon was for all intents and purposes self-governing.

Kodais is a bit of a social elitist. He believes there is an order to the universe and one should know their place in it. That being said he has a very peculiar sense of honor. He gives his superiors the respect due their station, and his peers a kind of professional courtesy. The person however, must earn his respect. Underlings get no respect from him at all until they have proven themselves, which is difficult to do. All this makes Kodais appear snobbish or arrogant at times. Oddly enough though, manners are a big part of Kodais' sense of honor. In his opinion good manners are the hallmark of professionalism and civilization. A peer meeting Kodais for the first time may think him overly formal, but that is just his way of being polite.

As a xenophobe he is convinced of humanity's superiority over the rest of the universe. He looks down his nose at all non-humans, and basically chooses which near-humans he accepts. He views clones to be lower than non-humans. To Kodais the artificial creation of any sentient being is an unforgivable blasphemy against the natural order of the universe. The only other real fear he possess is a case of thalassophobia. He grew up never seeing the ocean or any other body of water larger than a river or pond. Consequently he is uneasy around large bodies of water and, though he can swim, is quite nervous in or on the water. Another one if his quarks is a distinct aversion to being touched.

Being that Kodais was raised in a temperate jungle environment, he hates being cold. This was compounded when, while in the Army, his hands suffered mild frostbite during a mountain training exercise. Ever since then his hands' functions become impaired and painful in cold weather.

Physical Description

Though tall, Kodais is not a big man by any means; most would consider him of medium build. His brown hair is generally kept fairly short to keep maintenance low. Likewise his beard is clean shaven. Unlike most human Onderonians his eyes are blue. This is evidence that there was at least one immigrant in his family tree. His olive complexion however, is typical of a human Onderonian.

Kodais has a few identifying marks, none of which can be easily seen. The first is a barcode tattoo above his left ear that he received while he was a Beast Rider. The Beast Riders of old were prisoners that had been sentenced to die outside the walls of Iziz. Over time they tamed the beasts of Onderon and formed their own society to combat Iziz. These prisoners had their identification numbers tattooed on the left side of their heads. After the Beast Riders were integrated into the Onderonian Armed Forces many new Riders mimicked these tattoos as part of their esprit de corps. In keeping with tradition Kodais had his service number tattooed on his head.

The other marks are scars. One is a small scar on his lower right abdomen from a wound sustained in a knife fight. The others are a collection of small scars covering the left side and back of his neck and left forearm. These were left by shrapnel from an air burst munition while Kodais was in the Army.

Since Kodais likes to be inconspicuous he wears whatever clothing is in style for the world he is currently on. When traveling or on more rustic worlds his attire generally consists of a fatigue style jacket and trousers with boots. While in Brotherhood controlled areas he wears his robes.

Personal life

Always the scholar, Kodais has a penchant for language. He speaks Onderonian, Basic, Hapan, and Bocce fluently; speaks passable Mando'a and Minnisiat. He also understands Cheuch, but speaks very little. Though he detests the Yuuzhan Vong he is studying their language. It is important to know one's enemy. Learning their speech is a good start. Sith is a bit more difficult for him to learn as it is near impossible to find speakers to learn from. However, he can read several different Sith scripts.

There aren't many worldly interests for Kodais outside of the Force and lives a somewhat monastic life. However, he does have a taste for high end whiskeys such as Whyren"s Reserve and Johrian. Though not necessarily a gambling man, Kodais appreciates a good game of sabacc or pazaak and usually takes his deck with him when he travels. Styling himself as a man of culture, Kodais is an amateur collector of unusual items and artifacts. Strangely he doesn't have a specific item or theme to his collection, just whatever he finds interesting.

Equipment

As a former soldier Kodais is used to employing equipment and gear in the field. He is not picky about what he has at his disposal and is usually happy to use Clan and House general issue equipment. However, there are several items of his personal kit that cause him to stand out a bit.

Shekyn

"A lightsaber is a fine weapon indeed, but there is nothing like the feeling of cold steel as it cuts through the flesh of your kill."
―Kodais Solatus

Before Kodais carried a lightsaber, he carried a rather unique sword. Called a shekyn on Onderon, the weapon was favored by Naddists and a few members of Mafioso type gangs. After the Empire imposed its dominion over Onderon strict weapons laws were enforced restricting the possession of blasters and edged weapons. They shekyn was developed to subtly sidestep the law. The weapon is essentially a very large gravity knife. The blade is contained within the shaft of the weapon until it is released and extended by gravity or centrifugal force. The shafts were normally very ornate and resembled swagger canes when carried in public. The carrying of shekyns actually lead to a swagger cane fad among the wealthy in Iziz.

Kodais’ shekyn was built for him after he had gained acceptance into a small Naddist group. Unlike other shekyns Kodais’ has a very plain shaft; only being wrapped in leather. The single edged, non-vibrating blade is 26 inches (66 cm) of plain durasteel in total length. When the blade is extended four inches (10.1 cm) remain in the haft as a tang. The haft is 27 inches (68.5 cm) long and also made of durasteel making the entire weapon somewhat heavy. However, with a great deal of practice and good strength, Kodais made great use of his shekyn.

It has been many years since Kodais has used his shekyn in combat. Since becoming a Knight he has adopted the lightsaber as his weapon of choice as a matter of pragmatism. The lightsaber is more portable and far more useful than a simple durasteel blade. Kodais longs for a day when he may wield a blade in combat again.

DC-15A

Carried by millions of Clone Troopers during the Clone Wars, the DC-15A was as much a symbol of the Republic as the soldiers that carried it. Heavy and cumbersome, the weapon was deemed "obsolete" after less than a decade of service. Tens of millions were either destroyed by the Empire or put into storage. Millions more fell into circulation on the black market. The one belonging to Kodais is one of those.

Though antiquated and heavy Kodais regards his DC-15A rifle with great affection. The weapon is more powerful and possesses greater range than the vast majority of contemporary blaster rifles. Additionally, it is one of the few blaster rifle designs with a fixed buttstock; a feature Kodais appreciates for more accurate shooting. Many believe the weapon's length and weight to be serious draw backs in close fighting. They do not realize the DC-15A makes dandy club if required. Kodais has carried his DC-15A in every Plagueis conflict from the War of Ascension to the Tenth Great Jedi War.

Mandalorian Armor

Regarded as the finest armor in the galaxy, Mandalorian armor is notoriously difficult to come by if one is not a Mandalorian. Those non-Mandalorians that do have the dubious fortune of possessing Mandalorian armor are often hunted and killed with extreme prejudice by actual Mandalorians if discovered.

Ordinarily Kodais would not have given Mandalorian armor much thought. However, when an opportunity presents itself Kodais is loathe to pass it up. His particular set was recovered from the battlefields of New Tython during the Tenth Great Jedi War. The Mandalorian had been stabbed in the throat, presumably by a Plagueian soldier, so the armor was completely intact. Upon recovery, Kodais painted over the gaudy red, yellow, and grey of the armor with shades of tan, brown, and green to provide concealment. Additionally, Kodais has removed or disabled attributes of the armor that he deemed to be unnecessary or "fancy". Such attributes include the jet pack, whip cord launcher, and starship controls. The helmet in particular is a source of contention for Kodais. While it is a good helmet and perfectly serviceable, it is "too busy" for Kodais' liking. The helmet is equipped with advanced tracking and targeting capabilities as well as a link to a personal starship to name a few. These capabilities are useless to Kodais.

Kodais does not normally wear armor except during military or para-military operations. In the past Kodais has simply worn the issued Clan and House field armor. To his dismay said armor has typically been more restrictive than he cared for. The freedom of movement and protection afforded by the Mandalorian armor is beyond compare.

DJB Facts

Apprentices

  • Eridanis Aquila - She was Kodais' first apprentice and was ultimately a failure. Eridanis is referred to by Kodais as his "Lost Apprentice". This is both literal and metaphorical. Eridanis was a human Dathomiri that had come to the Brotherhood after seeking Dark Side knowledge past that of the Nightsisters. At first she rose through the ranks quickly and was chosen by Kodais to be his apprentice. She studied under him for two years with little progress before disappearing. It is believed that she returned to Dathomir.
  • Varoth - His second apprentice, and one of great promise. Varoth has excelled in his studies and progressed through the Journeymen ranks quickly. His progress has even garnered the attention of the Plagueis Summit. Indeed his career is being watched with great interest.

Trivia

  • Kodais (pronounced: Koe-Dice) comes from "Coadice", a gross misspelling of my real last name.
  • I was a real life United States Army Infantryman and Paratrooper.
  • While my shekyn very closely resembles the double vibro-sword from Crimson Empire, I can assure you that it was actually inspired by the German Fallschirmjagers' gravity knife.
  • Kodais has named his DC-15A "Edna".
