A citizen of Menat Ombo, Gideon Varos is a native New Tythonian born in 9 ABY. Gideon, due to popular support and successful campaign for public office, served Menat Ombo as a member City Council. He was the only City Council member in Menat Ombo to not be slaughtered by Cy Thuron, and is rumoured to be held within Purity Rock.

History

Origin

The few records that exist indicate that the Varos family emigrated to New Tython from Dantooine sometime in 8 ABY. Immigrant transport manifests show a total of 4 family members making the journey from Dantooine, Gideon being the youngest and only member of his family born on New Tython brings total numbers to 5.

Gideons father, Jerral worked hard his entire life although politics and financial and legal trouble on Dantooine forced him to sell the family farm and relocate. It is still unclear how Jerral discovered of the new opportunities on Harakoa but nevertheless the family touched down and immediately (albeit ironically) planted their roots as farmers once more. Average in size, The Varos Farm sits in the fertile plains east of Menat Ombo.

The family has lived quietly ardently maintaining their farm which produces grains. They are known in Menat Ombo for their fair prices and charitable nature toward all New Tythonian/Harakoans. Labor opportunities are always plentiful on the farm as the family has made a point to ingratiate the local Harakoans into agricultural lifestyles.

Gideons own upbringing apart from his work on the family farm is currently unknown. He did however gain a reputation amongst the local Harakoans and colonists over the years having been educated in Menat Ombo from a young age. He along with his family are regular fixtures of the community.

Civil Plight

In 35 ABY at the age of 26, Brotherhood forces reigned down on the planet cutting out a path of destruction. In response to the bloodshed Gideon allied himself alongside local militias for the defense of New Tython. During the short war Gideon had utilized his skill-set to negotiate peace and unity amongst the militias in order to efficiently counteract military maneuvers. Fellow militiamen, Harakoan and Human alike developed a fair amount of respect for the young farmer.

After the end of the war Gideon left the Varos Plantation and moved to Menat Ombo. While there Gideon spent several months participating in the reconstruction period. The time was fraught with stress and sorrow for the citizens but as time progressed and the city slowly healed Gideons influence over his fellow citizens had grown. In the process of the reconstruction Gideon had inadvertently gained a voice amongst those in his network and word of the intelligent and compassionate being branched further out.

In response to the zealotry and bigotry spread by the notorious figure Cy and the havoc he ministered to his supporters, Gideon too began proselytize sentiments in direct opposition of the mad hermit. Over the years Gideon had seen firsthand the hate and destruction of the Harakoans and Humans alike at the hands of one another. Recognizing the need for and advantages of unity and peace Gideon used his influential position gaining just as many supporters as he did enemies.

Near the end of 35 ABY Gideons supporters openly challenged the proto-New Dawn at their rally in the Visulu Market Forum calling for the group to disband and allow peace to thrive. In an act that incited a riot a lone Harakoan man was struck in the head with a stone sparking a battle like riot between the two hemispheres of Menat Ombos conscience.

Birth Of A Leader

Angered and initially unaware that a lieutenant of his had allowed the supporters to confront the violent group Gideon decided to confront the Menat Council in open assembly calling for an intervention against the chancre that was the early New Dawn. Owing to his responsibility as the peace movements leader and the catastrophe in the Forum, Gideon planned to hand himself over to K.U.D.F. security at the same assembly.

With a brief stretch of peace Gideon went forward with plans to petition to the Menat Council. Gathering his suppoters, an amalgamation of common citizens and proven proponents of the peace movement, Gideon led a march on Ooroo Abbey. However the short lived peace following the rioting allowed the wound of civil upheaval to puss over once again. Eyewitness reports indicate a human male entered the Abbey during the assembly, when Gideon reached the bench the figure rushed forward toward the Menat Council activating an explosive device.

At exactly the same moment however, High Councilor Ji, an aged Gand Grandmaster of the Knights Of Odan-Urr Jedi Order, intervened by throwing himself between Gideon and the Menat Council. High Councilor Ji threw out his hands unleashing a pulse of telekinetic force in time to throwback Gideon and the Council whilst absorbing the brunt of the blast. The bomb however proved to be stronger than the aged Gand's body could handle and he soon passed on into the force a few days later. Menat Council member Marten along with several other attendees too perished in the attack.

Having survived the attempt on his life Gideon vowed that the deaths of those in the Abbey would not go in vain. He further declared that until the peace, goodwill, and security of the people had been effectively achieved he would serve the city in whatever capacity he could. Some weeks later Gideon was nominated to replace deceased Council Member Marten's post for which he eventually assumed at the beginning of 36 ABY.

Imprisonment

When Cy Thuron conquered the planet in 37 ABY, Gideon was not present at the Ooroo Abbey and was, in fact, out on a campaign mission to spread goodwill and help out the citizens of the city. Apprehended by mercenary forces, he and his people were forced to surrender, at which point he was locked away in a cellar within the Memit District. He was not discovered by the Jedi during their infiltration of the city, and thus did not escape with the other refugees. For his actions against Cy, the newly minted King determined that death was insufficient, and handed him a life sentence within Purity Rock. Imprisoned there, he was stripped of clothing and dignity by the guards before being forced into the holding pens alongside the other Harakoans.

A champion of the largely-colonist capital city, he would come under attack by disgruntled and desperate natives for a time, until he managed to cultivate some support among them and attempt to rebel. Helping many Harakoans within the internment camp to gather up contraband and secret away as much food as they could, he was still largely unable to save the natives, but brought them a sense of hope and the will to resist. Together with other non-Harakoans interred, he began to form an environment of resistance within the dismal conditions of the camp. He awaits the opportunity to break free, and help the people trapped within Purity Rock to reclaim their world.

Physical Description

Originally a strong and handsome man, Gideon's imprisonment has left him gaunt, malnourished, and suffering from serious weight loss. His hair and beard have become long and unkempt, and his body bears the scars of repeated abuses. He is fairly tall, but is beginning to look almost skeletal, much of his good health lost. Behind the chapped lips and bruised skin, his brown eyes are beginning to become bloodshot and his sanity is beginning to stretch to its limits.

Personality

Always a natural and charismatic leader, Gideon is a giving individual, ambitious and yet caring. His imprisonment has robbed him of much of his old positivity and friendliness, but he has resisted the urge to become angry and selfish, choosing instead to believe that the Jedi and their forces might return someday to free the captive Harakoans. Even so, imprisonment has left him somewhat unhinged and he grows more desperate every day, and it is clear that the trauma of the experience will likely scar him for life.
