Dr. Corinna Magarin is a Zeltron scholar serving as Quaestor of House Hoth in Clan Odan-Urr. A career academic, Corinna spent most of her adult life as a professor of Force philosophies at the Shadow Academy and Research Director within the Aurora Collegium's Wayfinder Society.
Character History
Early Life & Adolescence (1–19 ABY)
Corinna was born on Zeltros to a family of innkeepers.
Corinna Magarin was born the second child of a family that ran a small inn along one of Zeltros' lesser tourist districts. Her parents were entirely ordinary by any Zeltron measure: warm and gregarious with a slight hedonistic streak. Their business likewise was neither prestigious nor struggling, especially luxurious nor bare-bones; it, like a thousand other hospitality and entertainment businesses, simply kept the planet's perpetual party running.
Put simply, Corinna did not fit in. From an early age, she found the constant presence of strangers exhausting and the unspoken rhythms of social interaction and hospitality inscrutable in a way her siblings and parents never understood. Though her family loved her without reservation, they found her habits odd, never quite knowing how to handle her oversharing with guests and slipping away to sit alone and read about whatever new topic had caught her attention that week. This led to a persistent, unspoken sense of Corinna's being a visitor in her own home.
While her siblings began to date and otherwise join the ongoing festival activities, Corinna only dove further into her niche interests. Hours spent perusing the holonet (including sites a teenage girl should not have visited) and haranguing guests of the family inn allowed what began as an idle curiosity in comparative cultural studies to blossom into something closer to obsession.
Zeltros' status as a pleasure world and tourist capital provided her with enough off-world visitors to teach her about countless planets and walks of life. Corinna made a project of talking to every Zabrak corporate raider, Twi'lek tradesperson, Sephi scholar, and whoever else might tolerate her incessant questioning. By seventeen she had become conversant in three different languages—though utterly incapable of small talk in any of them.
Corinna's family watched the development with the same baffled affection as always, but never managed to close the distance between them. Not finding connection and intimacy with her loved ones, she sought peace in meditation and the various martial arts practices of Force-using groups she read about. She began trying them out herself first as a matter of completeness, then with mounting, nearly religious interest; thus her intellectual pursuits, physical fitness regimen, and self-soothing techniques ultimately formed a self-perpetuating, closed system that would shape the course of her adult life.
Higher Education (19–29 ABY)
Reena University (19–23 ABY)
Corinna left Zeltros at eighteen to attend Reena University in the Tapani sector, one of the Galaxy's most prestigious institutions of higher education. Though the student body comprised wealthy heirs and scions of noble houses, she was admitted on the strength of her schoolwork and an entrance essay well beyond that of the ordinary applicant. Merit scholarships and need-based aid made matriculation possible for the child of modest entrepreneurs.
Life at Reena further tested her socially and emotionally. Though her shy demeanor and awkwardness certainly did not serve her on her home planet, these qualities made her especially conspicuous among the polished, elite students. Though an outlier again, she endured through hard work. Whereas on Zeltros her passionate interests isolated her, at Reena her brilliance beneath all the social friction attracted the attention of the philosophy and xenoanthropology faculty. They took her under their wing, mentored her, and recommended her for graduate study.
University of Bar'leth (23 ABY–29 ABY)
Corinna transferred to the University of Bar'leth in the Core Worlds. This smaller, more specialized institution built atop ancient ruins provided her the ideal setting for formation as a scholar and teacher.
The university's renowned archaeology program widened her horizons and allowed her research identity to fully crystalize. Her dissertation, aided by fieldwork in the Outer Rim, examined the intersection of sexual practices, courtship rituals, and philosophies of the Living Force across a range of galactic cultures. This project, to the occasional discomfort of the staid Savas, earned her a doctorate at twenty-eight. She emerged from Bar'leth a credentialed and respected, if obscure and highly specialized, academic.
Shadow Academy (29–44 ABY)
The monograph Corinna published from her dissertation research, as well as a handful of journal articles, eventually drew the attention of the Shadow Academy, which offered her a tenured position among the philosophy faculty. Excited to discover the Brotherhood, she accepted with no hesitation.
Much of Corinna's first two years in the Shadow Academy were spent at the Central Library on Lyspair.
With access to the Shadow Academy's extensive archives, rare holocrons, and unique traditions of Force practice, she settled into a productive teaching routine and robust research agenda. Even as the Shadow Academy became fleetbound after the destruction of Antei and Lyspair and the Collective attacked its new settlement on Arx, Corinna purposefully conducted her affairs research largely outside of Clan politics and the wider Brotherhood's constant threat of conflict.
This posture served her well enough. After the formation of the Aurora Collegium of Sciences in 39 ABY, she quickly rose through the ranks of its Wayfinder Society, earning an appointment as Research Director within a few years. Marshaling the resources of the archaeological society, she expanded her work from philosophical treatises, ethnographies of Force-using peoples, and anthropological studies of sexual mores and courtship rituals to include ancient artifacts imbued with the energy of the Living Force.
Clan Odan-Urr (44 ABY–Present)
Her insulation from clan life ended abruptly with an unexplained transfer order from the Headmaster sending her to Clan Odan-Urr. Edgar Drachen named her Aedile of House Hoth in advance of the Seventeenth Great Jedi War.
Mere days into her service, Edgar disappeared amid the civil unrest on Solyiat. With a battlefield promotion she assumed the mantle of Quaestor.
Appearance & Mannerisms
Physical Description
As a Zeltron, Corinna's skin is warm pink and her hair is blue-violet. Her facial features are soft and round, framed by naturally straight, shoulder-length hair. Her black eyes carry a certain faraway stillness; when she isn't actively focused on someone, her gaze tends to settle somewhere in the middle distance, though it sharpens instantly and completely he moment something or someone catches her interest. A small, thin nose and full lips complete a face that reads as gentle and characterized by a "mousy prettiness" in contrast to her species' stereotype as striking, sultry sex symbols.
Years of disciplined martial arts training have shaped a lean physique that might undercut a bookish first impression. She cuts a slender, somewhat sinewy figure with a flat stomach, defined shoulders, and toned limbs. Wiry muscle definition has not cost her a fundamentally feminine build, however; instead her meditative drilling has given her an upright posture and unhurried grace that emphasizes a curvy silhouette.
By any measure, Corinna's most distinctive feature is the collection of tattoos that run all along her body, save her face, hands, and feet. Acquired steadily over her life, travels, and study, the tattoo's unifying motif is branching. The pattern evokes root systems, biological vasculature, and winding water flows. Originating on her lower back, the branches fan outward and upward to thread down both legs to the ankle and both arms to the wrist. Set into the branches are smaller sigils and glyphs, arcane symbols rooted at spiritually significant nodes of the body. Sith and Krath symbols hide among the branches on her forearms; Jedi iconography circle her collar; and intricate knotwork of fertility symbols knit together across her solar plexus down through the pelvis. This body art functions as a sort of bibliography of her personal and spiritual development, monuments to the questions and exposures that have transformed her life.
Dress
Corinna's wardrobe shifts considerably by occasion and mood, though a certain bohemian sensibility is the common thread. Whatever the context, it may be said she dresses with conviction rather than expertise.
Left to her own devices, Corinna prioritizes comfort, function, and symbolism over fashion trends. For most teaching occasions, fieldwork, errands, and martial art practice, she will dress in outfits ranging from fitted leggings and a tank top to layered ensembles of loose, flowy garments woven from natural fibers. Jewelry and accessories reveal her eclectic taste and preference for the sentimental: cords and bejeweled rings purchased at bazaars on remote planets, pendants of obscure philosophical or cultural symbols, etc.
A worn satchel overstuffed with datapads, hardcopy tomes, knickknacks, and other miscellany rarely leaves an arm's length.
True to the rest of the look, she leaves her hair either loose and mostly unstyled or hastily gathered into a messy bun.
When circumstances call for more professional attire, Corinna makes a visible effort without abandoning her unique character. High-profile lectures, Summit business, and otherwise important people will see her don structured jackets, tailored vests, or robes offering a more intentional silhouette than her everyday wear. She would generally pair these with well-fitted trousers or a pencil skirt. Her bohemian streak still surfaces at the edges with richer colors and patterns, a piece of statement jewelry, or abstract embroidery patterns. The keywords for this look are "only slightly eccentric."
Full institutional formality means her Shadow Academy Fellow Robes leave the closet. These robes feature pauldrons embedded with prominent amethyst crystals connected via a gold chain linked at the neck, a wide belt bearing the Shadow Academy's emblem flanked by smaller amethyst crystals, an armored chestplate, gauntlets, and greaves worn over a black body glove and tunic bearing the insignias of House Hoth and Clan Odan-Urr meticulously embroidered into the design.
In this context Corinna wears her hair in a loose braid or simple half-up style, in the case of normal professional attire, or a tight chignon with the Fellow Robes.
Although she finds such social situations uncomfortable, formal occasions strip away any pretense of restraint Corinna carries the rest of the week. What's underneath is pure Zeltron: vivid hues, loud patterns, plunging necklines, skin-tight bodices, dramatic high-climbing slits, and stiletto heels that turn a graceful walk across the room into a catwalk strut. Her tattoos, normally only glimpsed at the collar or rolled sleeve, appear unhesitatingly on display. While her outfit choices may at times outpace her admittedly limited sense of style, Corinna makes up for it in pure confidence.
In a formal context Corinna's hair receives more deliberate attention than ever; she may tease high and voluminous, style it in a slightly overdone updo, or wear it down and swept into a dramatic flourish to her outfit.
Communication Style
Corinna speaks formally and, usually, at greater length than the moment usually calls for. Her vocabulary tends toward the elevated and ornate, even in casual conversation. She communicates with the slightly hurried, faintly theatrical cadence of someone who has spent a career lecturing.
Her eloquence belies an awkward, less polished instinct to say precisely what she's thinking with little filter and overwhelm others with information about her interests. She may offer blunt, unsolicited observations, though without intending offense and rarely understanding why she's caused any. With an opening (and even sometimes without one) she is liable to share only tangentially related facts or go off on a digression related to her research interests. Underlying it all is a struggle to read social cues. Though clever and adept at wordplay herself, for example, she might answer a rhetorical question in earnest or take a joke at face value.
A certain unguarded delight in the topics she speaks about, genuine warmth in her demeanor, empathic interest in her interlocutors, and sincerity that never curdles into condescension usually prevent others from becoming too exhausted, offended, or off-put. That charm often proves hard to resist, though some have attributed it simply to Zeltron pheromones.
View and Practice of the Force
Corinna treats the Force as more than an object of study. Indeed, it has become a whole spirituality. Those who only know her research might mistake her scholarly distance for detachment, but she meditates and trains like others pray or fast. Even her scholarship has become an act of devotion.
A Living Network
Corinna's understanding of the Force is deliberately syncretic, assembled over two decades studying dozens of traditions. In her view no single order or culture is authoritative; rather each offers a partial description of the same underlying transcendent reality.
At the center of her synthesis is a single image. The Force is a vast, living network binding every organism together like mycelial webs or root systems beneath a forest floor. That network runs through every living being, animating flesh and spirit such that bodies become active nodes lit from the same current that unites all things. In view of this emphasis Corinna almost never speaks of the Force in the abstract, instead consistently referring to it as the "Living Force."
Stillness and Motion
Connection to the Living Force relies on regular practice. For Corinna that practice follows two complementary paths: meditation and martial arts.
Her meditation practice blends intentional breathing techniques, mantras, and forms of awareness borrowed from across traditions. That disciplined noticing has allowed her to expand her awareness beyond her own skin and the room she occupies, to feel the currents bending and anticipate events before they happen, and even to exert influence over the climate around her.
Similarly, her training in Teras Kasi and K'thri serve as a more embodied form of meditation. Though these martial arts forms also serve to protect her in combat situations, her discipline of regular drilling unite her presence and awareness with physical fitness. Teras Kasi specifically allows her to develop a habit of trusting her primal instincts and letting her physical form react from its own wisdom. K'thri's constant rhythmic swaying and emphasis on situational awareness reinforces the constant motion of the world around her as well as the relational aspect inherent to existence. Years of this martial arts practice have connected her intimately with the current of Living Force flowing through her body, allowing her to manipulate its processes at will, to amplify her natural abilities or to impose her will on the physical world telekinetically.
Research Interests
Corinna's scholarship spans three interdisciplinary fields. These interests are evident in her published work, personal collections, and topics of conversation at almost any given moment.
Philosophies of the Force
The bulk of Corinna's work falls under comparative Force philosophies. How have disparate cultures across the galaxy constructed unique frameworks for understanding the same Living Force? How do those frameworks converge, diverge, and transform when exposed to one another? Her undergraduate training gave her fluency in ancient tongues (e.g., Old Sith and Rakata) as well as modern languages (e.g., Lonto and Dathomirian) so as to interpret primary texts and engage in ethnographic interviews.
Joining the Brotherhood considerably sharpened Corinna's interest in the Krath tradition, both as a historical phenomenon and its modern incarnation within the Brotherhood itself. Perhaps unsurprisingly, among the Krath themes she returns to again and again is power and repurposing of reclaimed knowledge.
Since her transfer to Clan Odan-Urr she has begun a book project examining the worldview of Rohlan Hoth, the namesake of the House she leads, and cataloguing the unique views and practices of the Brotherhood's only historically light-sided clan.
Archaeology and Material Culture
Corinna second field of research grew directly out of her graduate work under the Savas of the University of Bar'leth. Daily proximity to the excavated ruins of the Ascendant cult gave her hands-on training in archaeological fieldwork. Ever since, she has maintained in active interest in material culture, particularly those objects situated at the intersection of the sacred and the practical.
While recovered everyday objects offer a more complete glimpse into a culture's view and practice of the Force, Bar'leth's campus taught her singular, powerful Force artifacts are still out there; alchemically-treated relics, rare holocrons, and other priceless antiquities lay under ordinary dirt where people shop, work, and live. The thrill of that hunt has led Corinna to develop a modest but serious reputation for tracking down leads other researchers might dismiss as simple folklore.
The same flair for hunting Force artifacts, or perhaps simply her Zeltron heritage, gives rise to another interest: fertility idols, graphic devotional carvings, and objects clearly intended for intimate use rather than ceremony. Her more conservative colleagues might refer to these artifacts as "domestic ritual items," but the direct writing style of her published catalogues leaves no question that they are sex toys and pornography, dated and cross-referenced with the same attention she'd give a Sith amulet. In her mind, considering the bedroom as less than a temple represents a failure of nerve on the part of academe. That private habits reveal as much as, if not more than, any shrine comprises a core conviction of hers as a researcher.
Romance, Desire, and the Erotic
Having grown up a witness of Zeltros' perpetual party from the outside, never quite at home in her world's sexually natured culture, Corinna maintains a scholarly interest in sexuality, romance, and erotic art. She pursues that interest along two parallel tracks.
The first is straightforwardly sociological. She systematically studies how different cultures encourage courtship, individuals within those cultures bond as pairs or groups, negotiate desire within those groups, and act on that desire. Whether these behaviors and cultural construction of their underlying concepts connect to the Force explicitly or not, sociological research has taken her to settings as varied as formal noble courts and frontier settlements to sex clubs hidden in more respectable lounge establishments.
The second track is appreciative in addition to analytical. Corinna is an enthusiastic collector and critic of erotic art. Her libraries, holonet and physical, contain sexually explicit literature and romantic poetry. Her offices on Horizon Station, the Trepus Mine Base, and the Palimpsest showcase portraiture, statuary, and other visual art with nudity and other sexual themes alongside religious icons, philosophical treatises, and cultural artifacts. Much as she believes analysis of Force philosophies is incomplete without consideration of the material culture in which they arose, she asserts study of sexuality and desire cannot ignore their appearance in art of various media.
Relationships
Corinna first met Katrila in 38 ABY when, for the second time in her nine-year tenure, the Shadow Academy faced a crisis related to the Brotherhood's seemingly constant sequence of conflicts. Through of the criminal's connections, Corinna arranged for research projects that kept her far from Arx. The pair has maintained a business arrangement ever since. In exchange for Katrila's shipping services, network, and protection, Corinna gives her some of the less significant artifacts she recovers for sale on the antiquities black market.
Corinna appointed Kadrol Hauen as aedile of House Hoth after mutual visions from the Living Force led her fellow Wayfinder Society Research Director to seek her out during the Vatali blockade of Solyiat. The two regularly collaborate on research projects in addition to leading House Hoth together.
