Alliances was a diplomatic summit convened in 40 ABY in the city of Canto Bight on Cantonica. Organized by Selika Roh, Dread Lord of Clan Plagueis, the meeting brought together the Consuls of several Dark Jedi Brotherhood Clans in an effort to address the growing threat posed by the Children of Mortis.
Although long-standing rivalries between the Clans initially hindered negotiations, the summit was violently interrupted by an attack orchestrated by the Children of Mortis. The attackers attempted to frame Clan Plagueis for the assault by deploying captured ships broadcasting Plagueian identification signals. Despite the chaos and destruction across Canto Bight, the assembled Clan forces ultimately repelled the attack.
In the aftermath, the Consuls negotiated a limited cooperative agreement known as the Canto Bight Accords, establishing a pact of non-aggression between the participating Clans and a framework for cooperation against the Children of Mortis.
Prelude
Following a series of devastating assaults by the Children of Mortis across Brotherhood space, several Clans found themselves weakened and increasingly isolated. The Dark Council had offered limited direct intervention during the crisis, reinforcing the perception among some leaders that the Clans were largely responsible for their own defense.
Seeking a new approach, Selika Roh transmitted a private invitation to the Consuls of the Brotherhood proposing a summit to discuss coordinated action against the growing threat. The location chosen for the meeting was Canto Bight, a wealthy resort city on Cantonica known for its neutrality and discretion.
To minimize the possibility of escalation, each Clan was asked to bring only a single escort vessel. Selika herself committed to bringing only the Hynestian cruiser Resolution as a sign of good faith.
The Canto Bight Summit
Delegations from Clan Plagueis, Clan Taldryan, Clan Naga Sadow, Clan Vizsla, Clan Odan-Urr, and Clan Scholae Palatinae arrived in the Cantonica system and gathered at the Corusca Conference Center within the Canto Casino complex.
Negotiations between the Consuls quickly proved difficult. Decades of rivalry and mistrust between the Clans complicated efforts to establish cooperation. Among the most contentious issues was the continued use of slave labor by Clan Plagueis, which drew criticism from several leaders, particularly Appius of Taldryan and Revak of Odan-Urr.
While discussions continued on the surface, the escort fleets of the various Clans maintained a tense presence in orbit above Cantonica.
Attack on Cantonica
The summit was abruptly interrupted when a fleet of warships emerged from hyperspace in the Cantonica system. The vessels broadcast identification codes associated with Clan Plagueis and included several ships previously believed lost during earlier conflicts involving the Children of Mortis.
The fleet immediately launched starfighters and assault craft while system-wide communications were jammed. On the surface, dropships deployed soldiers disguised in Plagueian military gear who began attacking positions across Canto Bight.
Holonet broadcasts showing Plagueis insignia on the attacking ships led many of the assembled Consuls to suspect betrayal by Selika Roh. During the initial confusion she was detained by the other leaders as fighting spread throughout the city.
Battle of Canto Bight
Clan forces regrouped within fortified positions in the city, including the reinforced vault complex beneath the Canto Casino. During the fighting, Kamjin Lap'lamiz of Scholae Palatinae captured one of the attackers, whose body showed the distinctive crystalline corruption associated with the Children of Mortis.
The discovery revealed that the assault had been orchestrated by the Children themselves using captured ships and falsified identification signals to frame Clan Plagueis and sabotage the summit.
Selika Roh was subsequently released and assisted the other Consuls in interrogating the captured soldier. The interrogation revealed the location of the communications jamming equipment that had isolated the system.
A strike team led by Thran Occasus-Palpatine and accompanied by Plagueian death troopers assaulted the enemy communications hub hidden within the Canto Bight boathouse. After a fierce engagement with Mortis forces, the team destroyed the jamming equipment, restoring communications with orbit.
With communications restored, distress signals reached the Clan fleets. Reinforcements soon arrived, including warships from Naga Sadow and Taldryan, forcing the Mortis fleet to withdraw from the system.
Aftermath
Three days after the battle, the Consuls reconvened in the conference center to determine the future of their cooperation.
Despite lingering mistrust, the events at Canto Bight had demonstrated that the Clans could coordinate effectively against a common enemy. Selika Roh proposed a formal agreement known as the Canto Bight Accords, establishing a non-aggression pact between the participating Clans and outlining possible cooperation against the Children of Mortis.
In order to secure support from the other leaders, Selika pledged that Clan Plagueis would abolish state-sponsored slavery within its territory through a phased process. The declaration addressed one of the primary objections raised during the summit.
After extensive debate, the Consuls of Odan-Urr, Vizsla, Taldryan, Naga Sadow, and Scholae Palatinae agreed to sign the pact. The agreement committed the Clans to refrain from direct conflict with one another while the threat of the Children of Mortis remained unresolved.
Although the treaty did not eliminate the rivalries that had long defined relations between the Clans, it represented one of the rare instances in Brotherhood history in which multiple Clans formally agreed to cooperate against a shared enemy.
