The Taldryan Defense Force was the military component of the Taldryan Republic.

History

Branches of the Taldryan Military

Strategic Operations Council

The Strategic Operations Council was the body that oversaw and coordinated all of Taldryan’s military and security operations. The Supreme Chancellor was the nominal head of the Council in their role as commander-in-chief of Taldryan’s military forces, while the Vice-Chancellor served as the Supreme Chancellor’s chief of staff and personal representative on the Council.

Day-to-day control of the Strategic Operations Council normally fell to the Chairperson, the highest-ranked career officer in the Taldryan military. The SOC included the heads of the Taldryan Army, Navy, Gendarmerie Force, and Summit Guard as regular members. The heads of the Office of Special Intelligence and the Sphere of Research and Intelligence sometimes attended SOC meetings.

Military Prefecture

The Military Prefecture was responsible for overseeing the Taldryan military on behalf of the Taldryan Summit, preserving the principle of “civilian control of the military”. The Prefecture’s day-to-day responsibility was to provide administrative support for the Taldryan military. It also included the Office of the Inspector General, which investigated misconduct among Taldryan military personnel.

The Prefecture was headed by the Prefect (functionally the Vice-Chancellor of the Republic), who was the equivalent of a “minister of defense”. It contained both civilian and military personnel.

Taldryan Army

Taldryan’s army was structured primarily for offensive operations, leaving garrison duties to the Gendarmerie Force. The backbone of the force was composed of repulsorlift regiments with organic armor and artillery. They also operated an air assault regiment.

Taldryan Republic Naval Fleet

The Taldryan Republic Naval Fleet was tasked with both defensive and offensive operations. The day-to-day patrols of the Caelus System were carried out by the various cruisers and corvettes that made up the backbone of the fleet and its three Battle Groups. Battle-line formations consisted of large capital ships, their escorts, and a large number of fighter and assault ship squadrons.

Gendarmerie Force

Unlike other militaries, the “military police” components of Taldryan were united into a single branch: the Taldryan’s Gendarmerie Force. Their primary duty was to act as Taldryan’s law-enforcement arm in areas they controlled. The TGF’s second responsibility was to act as a garrison in areas captured by Taldryan’s military during times of conflict.

Summit Guard

The Summit Guard was the umbrella unit for personnel who answered directly to the Taldryan Summit. It consisted of three main components: the Cohors Praetoria Taldryae headed by the Taldryan Warbringer, the Close Protection Battalion, and the Lightning Flotilla. The Cohors supported the Warbringer in their operations on the Summit’s behalf, while the Close Protection Battalion was responsible for the security of the Supreme Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Magistrates. The Lightning Flotilla acted as the Summit Guard’s fast-attack force, as well as providing orbital bombardment support for the Cohors battalions.

Unofficially, the Summit Guard acted as a living monument to Taldryan's history. The unit often paid homage to Taldryan's past constituent Houses with names such as Dark Fire Brigade (representing House Dinaari), Hyperion Squadron (representing House Archanis), and Phoenix (representing House Ektrosis).

Other Forces

Though not technically under Taldryan control, the Taldryan military frequently interacted with other military and security bodies:

• The Vornskr Battalion mercenary company often took contracts to fight alongside Taldryan forces or secure Taldryan assets and interests.

• The Senate Guard, an arm of Caelus’ civilian government, was tasked with securing Senators and Senate facilities on Kasiya.

• Caleria Security, also known as “C-Sec”, was responsible for policing the city of Caleria and the surrounding area.

• The Droset space station maintained a private security force.

• Chyron, being an autonomous region, had no organised security force of its own and no Taldryan military presence on the moon. It relied on a citizen militia for defence.

Interaction Between Taldryan Members and the Military

The Taldryan military has always been understood to be an arm of the Republic as a whole. However, the level of control the Summit has exercised over the military has fluctuated over time, ranging from Taldryan members commanding or serving in regular military units, to a more hands-off approach that keeps Taldryan’s membership and its military largely independent of each other.

Taldryan members who wished to serve as active-duty military personnel were posted to the Summit Guard. This gave them the flexibility to take on special assignments on behalf of the Summit while keeping the impact of their absence from their day-to-day roles to a minimum. Members might serve as a soldier or squad leader in a Cohors assault battalion, a pilot or squadron commander in one of the Summit Guard's fighter squadrons, or as an officer aboard one of the Lightning Flotilla's capital ships.

Alternatively, Taldryan members could join the Military Prefecture. Prefects filled a number of roles, including liaising between the Summit Guard and regular Taldryan military units attached to its operations, and ensuring the discipline and integrity of Taldryan military personnel.

Taldryan Military Ranks

Like most militaries, Taldryan maintains a common rank structure across all of its branches, with certain variations in title by branch. This system is made more complex by the need to integrate with both Clan members who fall outside a conventional military structure, and the military of the Iron Throne.

Note: Taldryan members were only given command of units in which the commander was the same or lower rank as the Taldryan member. For example, a Loyalist Captain (grade OF-2 equivalent) might be given control of an Army company or Starfighter Corps flight (both normally commanded by grade OF-2 officers), but not a battalion (normally commanded by a grade OF-3 officer). When interacting with the Taldryan military, Taldryan members will normally be addressed by the Loyalist equivalent of their rank, except the Consul and Proconsul (who are addressed by their titles or military titles if applicable) and members of the Military Prefecture (who are addressed as "Prefect" regardless of rank).

* The Chair of the Strategic Operations Council is granted the rank of "War Marshal" upon assuming that position, and assumes a grade OF-10 rank after leaving that position. Other Taldryan Military officers are effectively limited to grade OF-9 ranks.
