Eve Sariis was a Human female who served as a Jedi historian, and eventually a Jedi Master, thousands of years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. Her fascination with tales of the first Sith Empire led her to fall to the dark side and declare herself a Sith, taking the name Maestus.

She was particularly interested in Urias Orian, the so-called "Immortal", who records claimed had discovered the secret to immortality. Her quest led her across the Galaxy, tracking down Orian's homeworld of Sepros in the Orian system. She learned of Lehon, and Orian's efforts to harness the lives of thousands in a "thought bomb" to break free of the chains of mortality—though his efforts ended in failure, tearing his soul apart for all time. Mirroring history, her own hunger for power brought about her downfall, leaving her hideously scarred, and ultimately destroying her, just as Orian's quest for immortality had destroyed him.

Her spirit lived on in her holocron, which somehow found its way into the archives of the ancient Star Chamber on Antei, and corrupting Xanos Zorrixor millennia later in 25 ABY, turning him into Darth Vexatus. She played a pivotal role in provoking Vexatus and his Master's, Trevarus Caerick's, betrayal of the Brotherhood in 29 ABY, which culminated in the Battle of Lehon. Her orchestrations saw history repeat itself: Vexatus destroying himself in his lust for power during his duel with Caerick, and his final confrontation with Muz Keibatsu and Macron Goura.

Trivia

Maestus began as a minor reference in the Mission to Kangaras run-on, originally intended simply as part of an explanation for the belated uptake of the Darth title by members of the Brotherhood. She later took on a more prominent role in the Songs of the Void run-on, taking on the role of the "witch", or "anti-mother", through having manipulated Xanos's grief at the loss of his mother as a child. In the Dagger's Point run-on, she finally revealed her true nature, abandoning her holocron to "hitch-hike" in Vexatus's body, and helping provoke the battle between him and his Master—mirroring the actions the shade of Urias Orian had on Trevarus Caerick. While Darth Vexatus "died" in the final confrontation, Maestus's future role remains uncertain, although she is expected to reprise her role as a villain at a later date.
