One of the major fortifications created by Clan Odan-Urr to assist with the defense of New Tython, Fort Pernicar was established in 39 ABY as an outpost and later operational headquarters. It served in this role for several years under the ownership of House Hoth, before being lost during the massacre of New Tython.

History

Constructed as a base of operations for House Hoth, Fort Pernicar served as a bastion situated on the coastline of Kamuikiko. Utilising the ruins of an ancient gladiatorial arena as its primary structure discovered by Liam Torun-Urr, House Hoth reinforced and then rapidly expanded upon the original designs. This soon led to the fort serving as a true base of operations for the House rather than a mere outpost to assist policing the region. Following the naming conventions of its patron, the fort was promptly named after the famed Jedi General who served under Lord Hoth.

Fort Pernicar served as a linchpin in the defensive plans for Clan Odan-Urr, and the fortress withstood many sieges over its lifespan. Among the earliest took place during the infamous Butcher of Kamuekiko crisis, where multiple Harakoan tribes were manipulated into waging a religious war against alien settlers. While the majority of the battles were waged beyond its walls, having a strong base to fall back on proved essential in rapidly pacifying hostile groups and bringing the war to a rapid end.

The base would see significant use in the conflicts against Cy Thuron, first against the New Dawn and the Thuron Monarchy where it fought to keep Kamuikiko from enemy activity. It served as a safe haven for many during this time, until it was eventually abandoned following Thuron's ascension to a place of government. The Monarchy thankfully ignored its importance during its efforts to purge New Tython of all non-human life, and failed to capitalize on their gain by occupying the base once Clan Odan-Urr was forced to retreat from the world. Upon their return, and following the decapitation of the enemy government, Fort Pernicar was retaken and would go on to serve as a hub of anti-insurgency activity in the following months. This was directed under the command of General Deo Sol, who would go on to serve as its executive officer until its final days.

The fort was eventually destroyed in the final Brotherhood invasion of New Tython, where the Grand Master's twisted vision of purity pushed him to ignore all peace treaties with the Jedi and exterminate them. Orbital bombardments and invading armies swept across the continent, burning everything in their path as they sought to murder every living being on the world. Fort Pernicar held against the invaders for the majority of the conflict, delaying the advance of enemy troops and resisting enemy assaults. While the Iron Legion would eventually overrun the fort in New Tython's final hours, the defenders reaped a heavy toll among their number, until only one-third of those who participated in the siege survived. This effort bought time to destroy essential documents and further assist with the civilian evacuation.

The ruins of Fort Pernicar still stand on the planet, with some remnant of its fortifications having resisted the devastation which ravaged the world. Orbital scans confirm that it is damaged beyond repair, and it is estimated that what little remains of the original structure will collapse entirely within the next five hundred years.

Facilities and function

The function of Fort Pernicar was initially intended to serve as an outpost for peacekeeping operations between settlers and the Harakoan tribes of the Kamuikiko coastline. Selected due to its location and the easy modification of its existing structure, it was a clear location to serve as House Hoth's initial outpost in the region. Following successes in initial operations within the region, excavation efforts uncovered a network of tunnels and caverns within the bedrock of the ruin, most of which could easily be expanded upon without weakening the supports holding up the arena itself.

As Fort Pernicar was steadily expanded upon, it transformed from a fortified outpost into a full-fledged command post and military barracks. Along with serving as House Hoth's HQ, the House itself was directed by the overall clan to training Jedi and Paramilitary members for operations in all environments. With the Dark Jungle, Jomesh, oceanic, and tundra environments all within a few hours flight from the fort, the location quickly became a training area for all Odan-Urr allied units.

The primary arena on the surface was continually utilised by both Jedi and KUDF forces as testing grounds, both against one another and in massed formation drills. Faux terrain and buildings could be rapidly established, moved and then demolished as needed. The surrounding stands and arena walls were heavily reinforced and refitted into battlements, though certain facilities existed to bolster training efforts, such as holographic projectors and devices intended to mimic the environmental conditions of certain battlefields.

Beneath the arena section of the facility, linked by a trio of turbolifts and stairwells, the excavated caverns held the nerve centre of the House. Multiple individual rooms were dedicated to essential roles such as armories, supply rooms and fuel pumps for vehicles. These ensured that, should they be isolated, those within the fort could maintain an effective army and withstand conventional sieges. This was further supported by two military-grade shield generators intended to protect the facility from ranged bombardments, forcing attackers to initiate close range assaults within range of the defender's guns.

Operation centres outfitted with holographic maps and communications networks assisted in directing House efforts across the continent, typically contacting and relaying information to outlying patrols, but also coordinating massed operations when required. These were situated close to the fort's barracks, meaning that they could be easily manned and brought to full operational activity within three minutes of emergency alarms being triggered. The systems within operated on independent power generators to the rest of the fort, meaning that even a successful heavy ion bombardment would struggle to bring them offline. Access to the lower levels could be controlled and cut off from this room, further enhancing its ability to stall any attempt to overwhelm the facility.

Yet perhaps the most essential component of the barracks was the main hanger. Built into the side of the cliff the arena was constructed upon, the heavy blast doors and shielding could open up to allow for the immediate launch of all ships within three minutes. With many core components and design elements having been taken from a heavily damaged MC40a Light Cruiser, the hanger could easily hold a small squadron of fighters, with room for a group of shuttles and a number of independent ships. This made it essential for rapid responses to enemy threats.

Personnel

  • Deo Sol, General - Inducted into the role of commanding officer in Fort Pernicar's final years of service, Sol directed KUDF forces from the base during defensive efforts on New Tython. His fate following the fort's loss and planet's devastation is as of yet unknown.
