Dossier 307

Darcy Avarik

Darcy Avarik is a human male smuggler and bounty hunter, aligned with Clan Vizsla. He is very young and usually quite brash, often acting impulsively. He provides a stream of conversation for anyone who will listen, which often alternates between irritating and entertaining his audience.

He was sold into slavery to settle his parents debts to a merchant guild owned by Nalya the Hutt, the Morakei Mercantile Reach. Always a bright boy with a gift of socialising, he quickly learnt the value of secrets and was able to leverage himself into a position within the guild's hierarchy. He even managed to outwit those he served, winning himself his freedom after securing a particularly valuable asset for Nalya.

However, as the permanent tattoo on his neck proves, no one is ever truly free of the Hutts. Darcy enjoyed his freedom despite the price on his head, riding a combination of luck, lies and larceny until he found his way to the Godless Matron, where Nalya had no influence. Then the Collective invaded.

During the battle on the Matron, Darcy aligned with Clan Vizsla and was given a choice: either pay his bounty to the Clan, or be returned to the Hutts. He became one of Clan Vizsla's foundlings, turning his skills at smuggling and fast-talking to the Clan's advantage.

After bringing in a large swath of credits and savings as a cargo runner and quartermaster, Darcy Avarik eventually formalised his belief in the Mandalorian Way, and has recently adopted the Creed and tried his hand at bounty hunting, with mixed success. His first formal contract was to capture the thief responsible for stealing from the Kandosii Casino, but Darcy made a different call.

Caden Itharus

Caden Itharus is a Force-sensitive human male slicer and droid mechanic. Blessed with an incredible intellect and an amazing gift for droids and circuitry, Caden was discovered by the Morakei Mercantile Reach and employed as a droid engineer and slicer. He has never embraced his connection to the Force and relies heavily on his droids.

In 39 ABY, he was escorted to Dandoran and tasked with stealing credits from the Garganta Galleria Casino before being evacuated when the conflict between the Severian Principate and the Tenixir Revenants grew out of hand.

Caden was able to escape his captors during the conflict, and made his way to the Kandosii Casino to try and lift some credits to evade discovery. After his crimes were discovered, a contract was placed on his head and Darcy Avarik was tasked with bringing him in. The bounty hunter made a different call, recognizing the value that his skills could bring to Clan Vizsla, and instead rescued him from some of Jakku's shadier residents.

Caden has significant difficulty dealing with people coupled with a mild attachment disorder, and he typically finds himself tagging along with Darcy despite the stark differences in their personalities. The two of them are also accompanied by the many droids and AIs that Caden has programmed.

Droids

Ruby

Backpack droid RU-B1, affectionately known as Ruby, is one of Caden's earliest AIs. She is also the craziest, possessing a high level of curiosity and a strong belief that she can accomplish anything and everything she decides to do. She was designed to be brave, curious and adventurous, qualities that Caden wished he held more strongly. These traits were programmed quite deliberately to help Caden with his endeavours.

Ruby will often perform scouting, repairing or slicing duties on Caden's behalf, and these same traits will often lead to Ruby sparking a chain of events with her unpredictable behaviour, or causing significant mayhem while accomplishing the simplest of tasks.

Skar

Standing two meters tall, 5K-4R is a sleek and imposing figure that towers above his wards. To the naked eye, Skar appears to be an old dark trooper droid with several modifications, including multiple layers of ultra-hard alloys that grant him exceptional strength and durability. His custom photoreceptors are blue, but will gradually redden through purple and into a furious scarlet depending on the threat level he senses. He has blasters built into his arms and a retractable blade for melee combat.

Skar was designed as a bodyguard and valet droid, to anticipate Caden's needs and to protect him from danger. The AI that controls Skar is a marvel of combat programming, and he has a strong affinity for tactical analysis and decisive action. His extensive knowledge of combat behaviours comes at the expense of his social capabilities, leaving Skar very laconic. The AI will often use only one or two words to convey the meaning of his actions on the rare occasions that he bothers to explain his behaviour, which is almost exclusively fixated on the care and safety of those he considers family.

Maxx

Technically named the "Manager of Murder, Movement and Multiple Xenial Xenosystems", M4XX was programmed to manage the care and piloting of Caden's ship. The AI has a predatory nature born from Caden's overactive imagination when it comes to space battles, and a tendency towards sarcasm born from Caden's insecurities about socialising and sharing his home. Despite his rough edges and tough talk, Maxx has been modified to include a restraining function that drastically changes his personality. This helps to stop him from going too crazy, as unlike the other droids this one has laser cannons and a hyperdrive.

Voice

V0-1C is a L0-LA droid, and hovers around as a guest manager and personal translator. Caden programmed Voice with an encyclopaedic database of languages taken from a protocol droid, and she has been outfitted with a vocabulator to allow speech. She was designed to perform translation and social tasks for her master, and performs the all-important duty of shutting down his social calendar. She has, however, picked up a very superior attitude and will often make decisions beyond mere translation, frequently paraphrasing to achieve the results that she is aiming for.

Heart

There are plenty of kind and caring doctors out there, with excellent bedside manner and the kind of compassion that can inspire a city. Then there is H4-RT, Caden’s medical droid.

Heart was designed to attend to injuries and other health care needs in a factual and impartial manner; however like all of Caden’s AIs, the droid has adapted to their duties in unexpected ways.

Heart will attend to any injury brought to their attention with the warmth of an interstellar void, and the mannerisms of a speaking calculator constantly reminding you of your odds of survival. Whenever there is a worse case scenario that should be hidden from the patient, the patient will usually be the first to know.

However, H4-RT is extremely good at the functional parts of their job. The extra features - compassion, sensitivity and confidentiality - have been discarded, and Heart’s physical condition reflects this; exposed wiring sticks out, some of the plating is missing and while they haven’t fallen apart yet, wagers (but not risks!) are taken with every patient.

Mouse

Not an individual AI like the others, Mouse is the nickname given to all of Caden's mouse droids, who are all programmed with the same main protocols. How the AI is able to determine which mouse droid he is actually speaking to is a mystery. The mouse droids are all programmed to accomplish their tasks exactly and without question, and often include models for transporting data and couriering objects, but occasionally Caden designs more specialised models for basic repairs, infiltration and even demolitions.

Ships

Dazzling Diamond

The X-70b Phantom-class experimental ship Dazzling Diamond serves as Caden and Darcy's home and base of operations. The covert operations ship has a number of upgrades and advanced systems available, many of which Caden has tinkered with, including limited cloaking ability and a sensor-resistant exterior.

The ship itself is piloted by Caden’s predatory AI pilot Maxx, who operates the ship’s many complex systems with a mixture of homicidal glee and callous disregard for passengers, which are not recommended.

The usual armament of the Navigator features an upgraded class 1 hyperdrive; an IFF confuser replacing explosive missiles to assist in escape and evasion attempts; two heavy cannons on the wings; an anti-pursuit laser turret in the centre of the roof that targets any projectile or starfighter at close range; and a tactical jammer system that can interfere with most medium-range vessels.

Carved wood panelling lines much of the interior lounge, which features a variety of luxury amenities, including a seated holotable area, built-in disco lights, an autochef, and a small bar.

The medical bay includes the standard medical bed and a bacta tank, along with a procedure terminal and appliance array used by Heart, the ship’s medical droid.

The crew cabin in the rear of the ship has been customized, with a small refresher station occupying the aft side of the room for additional comfort on long trips. A pair of bunk beds remain should there be a need to bring guests aboard.

The conference room includes an entertainment suite and Potolli-weave luxury seating that can merge together to form couches, with a retractable table in the centre of the room.

The cargo bay contains a small workshop for Caden to tinker around with, limiting cargo space to 50 tonnes.

The bridge contains advanced hardware, including an enhanced communications holoterminal providing basic encryption and limited slicing capability, a dedicated navicomputer and an advanced sensor array that allows it to accurately scan other ships at medium range.

Navigator

Caden's personal vessel is the S-161 XL luxury yacht, Navigator. The vessel includes a number of upgrades over the more common S-161 models, many of which Caden has made himself.

The cockpit includes a more advanced communication station allowing for limited slicing and encrypted communications. The pilot and co-pilot have joint control over the vessel, however both stations are rendered largely redundant thanks to the onboard AI, Maxx.

The holotable room occupies the forward section of the vessel. The holotable itself has been replaced with a more advanced model of Caden's own design, and the room is ringed with comfortable chairs upholstered with Potolli-weave fabric. Smuggling compartments are built under the chairs.

The common area is a little more cramped than a standard S-161. The room is dominated by a large curved lounge, with a holotable for entertainment. A small terrarium lines the forward port wall, and includes a sizeable coded storage locker for gear, armor and weapons. Another storage locker has been added to the forward starboard corner.

The galley occupies the raised area further into the ship. The roof opens to allow natural sunlight into the galley area. A large terrarium occupies the port wall, with smuggling compartments built underneath. Meals are almost always taken at the galley table.

The main corridor links the rest of the ship with three personal quarters and the engineering room. On the port side is Caden and Darcy's personal room, featuring a large bed, holoterminal, and clothing lockers. The forward starboard room has been converted into a refresher room for added comfort on long trips. The aft starboard room remains a guest bedroom complete with a small bed and personal storage locker, however it is often used as an extra workshop or smuggling space.

The engineering room provides a small workstation for Caden to tinker on things with, along with access to the hyperdrive and power generator. A ladder leads down to a lower section that includes maintenance access shared with a small cargo area that can be accessed from the exterior of the ship.

Crescent Courier

The Crescent Courier was a JumpMaster 5000 owned by Darcy Avarik. It featured several smuggling compartments built into the cargo bay, and provided Darcy with a suitable home during his early smuggler days. The ship was involved in the Children of Mortis invasion of Zsoldos in 40 ABY, where the backpack droid Ruby kidnapped Caden, seized control of the Crescent Courier and flew it into the warzone to provide air support before eventually crashing and destroying the ship.

Covenant Runner

The Covenant Runner is a YT-2000 light freighter owned by Darcy Avarik. The freighter was used for the bulk of Darcy's smuggling career, and features a number of extra compartments and hidden areas. Combined with his role as one of the Clan resupply quartermasters, Darcy's deliveries of standard goods would often include extra presents and favours for everybody. The ship is currently owned by the Wookiee warrior Snowmane, an old acquaintance of Darcy, in settlement of a debt.
