Character History
- "You hear that click when I pull the trigger, meaning the gun is empty? What it really means is that I pulled the trigger twice, and the bullet is already lodged in your skull."
- ―William, during the events on Reecee.
Early Life
William Travers was born an orphan, as his mother had died in childbirth and his father had committed suicide shortly after impregnating William's mother. His father was born in the Warrior Caste, so William knew what his destiny was to be. He lived the first fifteen years of his life in an orphanage, not yet old enough to fend for himself, and he hated it. Always, he longed to be out of the confining walls and miserable climate, but was always trapped.
On his 15th birthday, William left the orphanage in the dead of night, to make his own way on the streets. For three years he lived a life on the edge, learning the ways of the streets and the way of crime. He stole food to survive, bullied people for money, and hid in the shadowed alleys during the day, before he came to life at night. However, shortly after his eighteenth birthday, William was shot and badly wounded, by thugs looking for money.
He was identified as William Travers, orphan, and returned to the orphanage after he recovered from the wound. However, the government couldn't ignore the charges now leveled on his name from his three years on the streets stealing, assaulting, and dealing drugs. However, he received an offer from the desperate Arcona Expeditionary Force. They offered to put him through four years of schooling at the academy on Eldar and then to transfer him to active service, and clear him of all charges. William accepted, desperate to make a better life for himself.
Joining the Expeditionary Force
It was 26 ABY when William graduated from the academy, and was immediately placed in Shroud Squadron. Shroud had an aging commander, and a lot of young members, as most of its veterans had been transferred out to fill other slots. So William entered the Squadron with a lot of potential, and quickly became at home among his new comrades, all clean cut Warrior Caste academy grads. William knew combat, and knew people, as he had learned from his years at the orphanage and on the mean streets.
The Yuuzhan Vong Incursion nearly killed William, but he survived on instinct alone, as he so often had. However, the commander retired from active duty, as many commanders did after the trying events of that war. William was eager to step up to the plate and serve, and his comrades agreed that he was the one that should be chosen to lead.
Shroud Commander
William was denied the job as commander, instead it was given to one of his comrades. The comrade, however, didn't want it. So, William went before the Proconsul himself, pleading for the position of Shroud Commander. The Proconsul refused, saying that he was not ready for it and that his comrade would do better. Negotiations got so intense that the comrade pulled out his own blaster and rested the barrel on his temple, threatening to pull the trigger if the commander position wasn't given to William.
Eventually, the Proconsul relented, and gave William the job. Will has proved his worth ten times over, but that Proconsul still has his doubts from time to time.
Personality
The Commander of Shroud is known as a witty and charming man, but is shown to have dangerous tendencies at times. He frowns upon the practice of taking hostages, and prefers to just kill. He likes to gamble, and keeps a stash of death sticks in a locked case beneath his cot. His comrades overlook these tendencies, the lingering habits of all of the years spent on the streets as a coldblooded criminal.
