Ail’en Sommetra is the current Commanding Officer of the Nebula-Class Star Destroyer Excidium II, and the previous Commanding Officer of the original Excidium. Recently promoted to the rank of Admiral, she is second only to her old friend and contemporary Timbal within the Clan Scholae Palatinae Fleet chain of command as Deputy Clan Fleet Admiral.

Character History

Childhood and Early Life

Ail'en is the only child of a two starship engineers, Torsk and Mehal Sommetra, born in the Commenor System. From an early age, she took a liking to travel and an intense interest in the workings of starships. Applying herself to her schoolwork, she easily graduated with honors and through her family connections was able to secure an appointment as an engineering candidate in the Imperial Academy, despite being female.

Service to the Empire

Graduating at the top third of her class, her first assignment was aboard an older Carrack-Class light cruiser as a junior engineer. Working her way slowly up the chain of command, she finally was promoted to Commander, second in command of a certain Victory-Class Star Destroyer Excidium, serving with the Emperor's Hammer Strike Fleet.

Service to Scholae Palatinae

A year after her posting to the Excidium, her loyalties were tested in a way that she would have never considered before. The Clan leadership mysteriously boarded the ship and rounded up the command staff, and told them of their plans to leave the Emperor's Hammer behind. Her commanding officer, Captain Cybsh Smchi, was resolutely steadfast in remaining loyal to the Hammer, and as such was left behind. Sommetra was then pronounced as Acting-Captain, and then Archpriest Saitou was given temporary command of the ship during the Exodus. After several battles, she was formally pronounced as the ships' Captain.

The Yuuzhan Vong Disaster

Following a Rite of Supremacy, the Captain and the Excidium were present along with most of the other ships of the Brotherhood for celebrations, which included a large portion of the Clan Brotherhood members aboard the ship. After the conclusion of the ceremonies, the ship and its' escorts were preparing to return home when an entire war fleet of the Yuuzhan Vong arrived and attacked without warning or mercy. Captain Sommetra and Timbal worked together to coordinate a defense, but the sheer ferocity of the attack, the panicked call to abandon the system, and a priority message that their home system was being invaded led them to send the escorts home to combat the threat while the Excidium provided covering fire and drew that attackers to itself. Taking severe damage, the ship limped into the Shroud surrounding Antei, made running repairs, and returned home. After losing a ship to Arconan interlopers, the Captain led the counter-attack to avenge the destruction of the Emperor's Sword.

Operation: Reclamation

Upon orders by then-Consul Braecen Kaeth, multiple probes were dispatched to chase down the remnants of the Yuuzhan Vong fleet that had attacked the system. While waiting for information from the probes, the ship wasn't able to get proper repairs, considering that the shipyards in the system were seriously damaged by coralskipper attacks. Only the more critical systems were looked after. Far faster than Captain Sommetra would have liked, word came down from the probes of the location the remaining Yuuzhan Vong fleet, nearby in Hutt space. Jumping in under the direct command of Consul Kaeth, the Excidium and several other Clan warships gave chase.

Arriving at station, the Yuuzhan Vong used two frigate analogs as bait. A few moments after the loss of a Clan warship, the enemy sprung their trap.

From behind the Clan ships, one of the Yuuzhan Vong interdictor analog ships jumped in, hemming the Clan ships. Far more powerful than a comparable Immobilizer cruiser, the Clan fleet found itself seriously out-gunned. It was then that the Captain ordered a charge through the interdictor to clear the area, with heavy losses sustained by the Clan fleet, although they were able to claim a frigate analog in return.

Arriving at their home system, Captain Sommetra rallied all remaining Clan ships to provide support, but it was too late, as the Yuuzhan Vong cruiser and remaining frigate entered the system. Due to the positioning of the ships in the system, the enemy ships were able to pick off the Clan vessels one by one, with the loss of the frigate. Finally, as the only Clan ship remaining in the system, and with mounting irreparable damage, Captain Sommetra ordered the Excidium to ram the enemy cruiser. Spearing the ship squarely in the middle, the enemy cruiser perished. In the end, this action by the Captain ensured the end of the Yuuzhan Vong threat to the Clan

Current Events

For her continued loyalty, her crucial roles in many Clan battles, as well as the expansion of the Clan fleet, it was deemed that Ail'en Sommentra would be promoted to Admiral, and the day-to-day Commanding Officer of the Clan Fleet. She reports directly to the Clan Fleet Admiral, and serves as their deputy. She is also dual-hatted as the Commanding Officer of the Excidium II, a role that she is quite familiar with. Her current overriding concerns are the on-going training of the Clan Fleet crews, many of them new to the trade, as well as working out standard Clan protocols for fleet-wide operations with the Clan Fleet Admiral.

Profile

Appearance

Ail'en takes much of her visual appeal from her mother, but has inherited many of her fathers' traits and mannerisms. Her long hair is a source of pride to her, her one concession to feminine beauty in an otherwise austere military environment.

For normal day-to-day wear around the Fleet, she usually wears her normal duty uniform, but off duty she's like any normal woman in the prime of her life.

Personality

Ail'en has an intense streak of curiosity, which served her well in all of her roles. A natural learner, she's mastered much but is ready to admit that she still has much to learn. By necessity, her circle of friends are very rare, but she counts Timbal as one of her best friends, being that they've worked together for so many years. Her ongoing positions have rarely allowed her the luxury of some sort of companionship, despite the advances of many within the Clan.

In combat, she adopts a no-nonsense and commanding tone, which has helped her crew keep it together during times of extreme stress. Ever loyal to her crew, they are fanatical towards her and will readily follow her orders at any cost.
