3rd Battalion, or 3/502, was an infantry battalion in service to the Army of the Iron Throne. It was one of five standard infantry battalions in the 13th Starborne Division and served under I Legion supported by Task Force 61 as part of Joint Task Force Rancor.
History
The battalion was formed in 27 ABY as part of the Dark Council’s military reformation following the Battle of Antei. Knowing that well-trained infantry formed the backbone of any military, the Grand Master and his agents ensured that the Army of the Iron Throne would be no different in that regard. With countless worlds felled by the Yuuzhan Vong onslaught, the shaken galaxy offered no shortage of fighting beings whose militaries had collapsed and desperately sought survival through employment of their skills.
Unification
In 30 ABY 3rd Battalion was deployed to the Antei System with the rest of the Army of the Iron Throne and tasked with recapturing the Brotherhood seat of power at Antei. One of the battalion’s major objectives in the first few days of the war was to secure the passages of the Shadow Lands, and to keep them open until reinforcements could engage the enemy in the region.
In the subsequent weeks of the war, the battalion was, along with other units from I Legion, assigned to the reclamation of the Dark Hall. To do this, elements of the battalion held key terrain in the Shadow Lands until flanking units could sweep through enemy opposition in the northern mountains of Narmar and work their way back down into the Shadow Lands towards the Dark Hall.
Ultimately, their objective was achieved and made possible the recapture of the Dark Hall and with it, Antei.
Organization
The 3rd Battalion was organized into four companies including a Headquarters & Headquarters Company (HHC), overseeing battalion administration, and three rifle companies. Within each rifle company were three line platoons and one headquarters platoon. Each line platoon consisted of three line squads and one weapons squad.
Squads were the key elements of the rifle company consisting normally of 9-10 soldiers. A rifle squad broke down into two fire teams of four individuals each guided by a Team Leader (TL) overseen by the Squad Leader (SL).
Weapons squad broke down into three gun teams of three individuals overseen by their Gun Team Leader under the Weapons Squad Leader (WSL) who was often the senior enlisted member of the platoon next to the Platoon Sergeant (PSG).
The companies all had similar capabilities, though were sometimes tasked with special responsibilities within the battalion. Each company was commanded by an officer at the rank of Captain (CO) and assisted by an Executive Officer (XO) and First Sergeant (1SG). Platoons were commanded by Platoon Leaders typically at the rank of Lieutenant assisted by a Platoon Sergeant at the rank of Sergeant First-Class.
The battalion itself was overseen by an Officer typically at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel assisted by an Executive Officer and Command Sergeant Major (CSM).

Actions
Equipment
Appropriations budgets were not as high for more conventional forces like 3/502. The 3rd Battalion relied on older, sometimes antiquated, equipment and weapons but nevertheless executed their duties with pride and professionalism. Though some items were dated, they were all kept in top condition and were still as lethal as the day they were made.
The following weapons and equipment were typical of the battalion as well as the other conventional forces under the 13th Starborne Division with some exceptions.

- Harness or other RACK system
- Miscellaneous items
Vehicles
The 3rd Battalion could employ several light vehicles in order to supplement its infantry with transportation and mobile firepower. Forward elements of the battalion were often equipped with lightly armored vehicles like the AT-PT or AT-RT in order probe ahead of the main force.
