"If we do not fight we lose ourselves… And die in anonymity."
―Excerpt from Epicanthix chief Canthar’s short poem Making War is Love.

Destin Oceanfel is a Human male Jedi of Clan Odan-Urr and House Satele Shan. He considers himself to be somewhat of a warrior-poet, and is noted for both his stoic philosophy and direct fighting style. His father is Tybalt Oceanfel, and his mother is unknown to him.

History

Early Years (6 ABY- 22 ABY)

Childhood

Destin was a precocious child, dispossessed to philosophy and debate. This is primarily due to the influence of his father, Tybalt Oceanfel. A displaced Alderaanian, Tybalt taught his son much of his former planet's culture - a culture focused on harmony, education, the arts, and poetry. This classical education left him learned in many intellectual and artistic fields.

However, Tybalt's career as a sculptor was unable to support his son, and the two eventually settled into a life of labor as junkers on Ord Mantell. They managed to escape Imperial notice during these years, and lived a meager but happy life.

Adolescence and Departure

"All boys leave home someday."
―Red's Mother

Destin assisted his father as a junker, which marked the beginnings of his belief that one's body should match one's heart and mind - "that all should be strong." He also continued his studies on the holonet, becoming something of a poet himself. However, Destin's search for virtue eventually led to him and his father, Tybalt, to fight. Destin, in his youthful passion, claimed that a good man could not simply watch injustices in the world pass by, but rather must fight them head-on. This conflict between them eventually caused the young man to leave his father's home and set off-world aboard a YKL-37R Nova Courier - The Cascade.

Aboard The Cascade (22 ABY - 27 ABY)

Prior to the Yuuzhan Vong War

The YKL-37R Nova Courier has been a ship used almost exclusively by rebels and rebel sympathizers, and The Cascade was no exception. Destin’s muscular frame allowed him to find work aboard it as an enforcer and bodyguard for the scoundrel Josan Jhophal, an Epicanthix. Josan made a living running medical supplies to freedom fighters of planets in civil war, as well as smuggling refugees out of them. Along with their copilot Roche Siak Wun Fower (RS-14) the protocol droid, and their gunner, the Gand Findsman Yu’an Pryss, Captain “JoJo” and Destin Oceanfel saw a fair bit of both space and ground combat. JoJo and Destin enjoyed a friendly rivalry, JoJo being unswayed by most of Destin’s philosophical arguments, but still enjoying their debates.

During the Yuuzhan Vong War

As smugglers of medical supplies, The Cascade and its crew eventually got involved in assisting planets that were victim to the Yuuzhan Vong War. They participated in the Battle of Rodia, helping Rodian refugees escape the war. It was during this time that Destin discovered his sensitivity to the Force - he was unable to properly employ his fighting techniques against the Vong. Due to this weakness, a run went horribly wrong - Destin had to escape Rodia with only RS-14, leaving behind his captain and Pryss. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.

On Ione (27 ABY - 34 ABY)

Aran Tonor

After escaping Rodia with RS-14, Destin realized that the life of a spacefarer was not for him. He instead sought out a planet on which he could live, study, and hone his skills with the Force. He eventually found the tradehub Ione, and formed a friendship with Aran Tonor, a former Grey Jedi in seclusion. Under Tonor’s teachings, Destin learned the basics of Shii-Cho, along with a great emphasis on Form Zero. The two of them discussed the merits of activism versus seclusion and of temperance versus passion. Despite Tonor’s greyer leanings, Destin unwittingly embraced many of the tenets of the old Jedi order in his search for virtue - though he accepted combat and conflict much more readily. Destin occasionally visited Tonor’s Dulon studio, though he did not practice the martial art. It was in the studio that Destin first met Eiko Lanzer.

Eiko and Destin did not interact much during these years, though they both observed one another. Oceanfel did not witness Eiko’s theft and maiming, but pieced together the details. Incensed despite his attempts to forgive, Destin remained on Ione only a few more months. He could not let go the grievous offense to the one he called both master and friend.

In Search of Eiko (34 ABY - 39 ABY)

"A mask is meant to hide you from something. In his case, it’s to hide from himself."
―Destin, on Eiko’s Mask
Eiko Lanzer

With his old ally RS-14, Destin took the helm of The Cascade and began his search for Eiko Lanzer. During these years, Destin lived a rather ascetic life with very few material possessions. The hours not dedicated to his search were spent furthering his study of the lightsaber and Force powers. Eventually, Destin happened across a hololog on Harrin that left him with coordinates into the Antei System.

Upon arrival, his ship happened across another - the Dark Star, flag ship of Herald V'yr Vorsa. The Neti was able to sense Destin’s sensitivity to the Force and his attunement to its light side. As a result, she intervened in his journey to take him under her wing, furthering his training and teaching him about the nature of the Brotherhood.

Personal Details

Physical Description

Destin appears to be an ordinary human. Like many workers and laborers, his dark blond hair is kept short for practical reasons, and the tone of his skin suggests many hours spent beneath a sun. His dark blue eyes peer from between a heavy brow and high cheekbones - all of it framed by a strong, square jaw. He stands taller than most humans at 1.85m, and is a good bit heavier; broad shoulders and corded forearms are evidence of his muscular body.

Weapons and Other Belongings

Living a mostly ascetic life, Destin has few things he owns. Like all Jedi, he carries a lightsaber on him - a blue armory saber. Despite its simplicity, Destin takes great pride in it. He also carries with him a set of Tricopper Knuckles that are well worn. A set of lightweight nanomesh armor is typically concealed beneath his robes.

Although he still maintains that it belongs to JoJo, The Cascade has been legally transferred to Destin’s ownership, along with RS-14.

Personality and Philosophy

Destin considers himself to be a "true Jedi," and does his best to live up to the organization’s code. Peaceful, knowledgeable, serene, and harmonious are all things he strives to be. First and foremost, though, Destin seeks out the nebulous concept of "virtue." He believes that destructive emotions such as misery, suffering, hatred, and rage are the result of personal failures, and that a wise and ‘virtuous’ individual would not feel them. As of such, one must choose to be good, and choose not to feel said emotions.

These tenets, while perhaps noble, are not conducive to happiness. Destin is often stern and serious. It’s rare for him to make light of a subject or jest. A smile on his face is most likely the result of pride in a hard but well-done job.
