Hikari Kojima is a Human engineer and member of Alaris Jinn's Inner Circle. Raised by the Ughnaught community of Cloud City, Hikari spent most of her childhood around machinery and developed a habit of taking things apart simply to find out how they worked. She eventually left Bespin to work aboard a cruise ship, where she met Mira Dantavi and rose to the position of Assistant Chief Engineer.
Mira later recommended Hikari to Alaris for what was supposed to be a short-term engineering contract. The arrangement became considerably less temporary over time, with Hikari eventually becoming Alaris's Chief Engineer.
History
Human by blood, Ugnaught by family
Hikari Kojima was raised among the Ugnaught communities of Could City. Despite being Human, she grew up surrounded almost entirely by Ugnaughts and considered herself one of them. Ugnaught was her first language, and she only picked up Basic later as she began spending more time around outsiders.
Hikari was a curious child, particularly when it came to machinery. She had a habit of crawling into maintenance spaces and other places she wasn't supposed to be, usually just to find out how something worked. The Ugnaughts around her eventually stopped trying to keep her out and started putting her to work instead. She learned from whoever happened to be working nearby, first fetching tools and cleaning parts before gradually being trusted with repairs of her own.

Leaving Cloud City
When she was sixteen, Hikari was offered work in the engineering department of a cruise ship. She left Cloud City and took the job, quickly finding that keeping a passenger vessel running involved considerably more than engines. Anything aboard the ship could break, and sooner or later Hikari found herself working on most of it. She proved good enough at the job that, despite her age, she eventually rose to Assistant Chief Engineer.
While aboard the ship, Hikari met Mira Dantavi, who had been hired as a performer. Their friendship started largely because things kept breaking around Mira and Hikari kept being the one sent to fix them.
Hikari also developed a small crush on her. Mira was a beautiful dancer and Hikari was more than happy to find an excuse to spend time around her, which meant that anything Mira needed repaired tended to receive particularly enthusiastic attention. Hikari never neglected her actual work for her, but if she had nothing else to do, there was very little Mira couldn't convince her to take a look at.
The crush eventually passed. The friendship didn't.
Working for Alaris Jinn
When Mira's contract ended, she left the ship but remembered the young engineer who seemed capable of fixing nearly anything put in front of her. She mentioned Hikari to Alaris Jinn, who happened to have some work for an engineer and was willing to trust Mira's recommendation.
Alaris initially hired Hikari on a short-term basis. Once that job was finished, however, he found more work for her. Then more after that. The arrangement lasted considerably longer than either of them had originally planned, and at some point there was little reason to continue pretending it was temporary.
Hikari eventually became Alaris's Chief Engineer and, in time, a member of his Inner Circle.
Hikari, again, having more fun that she should be.
Personality and traits
Hikari inherited much of the work ethic of the Ugnaught community that raised her. She has little interest in whether a job is prestigious or glamorous and is perfectly willing to get dirty if that is what a repair requires. Being Chief Engineer has never stopped her from crawling beneath a deck plate with a hydrospanner when something needs her attention.
Her curiosity has changed very little since childhood. Hikari likes knowing how things work and has difficulty leaving an unfamiliar piece of machinery alone once it has caught her attention. This can occasionally lead her into places where she is not supposed to be, a habit that has followed her since her days exploring Cloud City's maintenance spaces.
Hikari is confident in her abilities without considering herself above the work she assigns to others. She prefers solving problems herself when practical and has a tendency to regard mechanical failures as challenges rather than inconveniences. Her first response to a broken piece of equipment is often some variation of, "I can fix that."
Despite speaking Basic fluently, Hikari considers Ugnaught her native language. She still uses it naturally and tends to fall back on it when thinking through complicated technical problems or talking to herself while she works.

Hikari adopted Billiam T. Lothcat after she found him as a kitten wandering the mechanicals of Cloud City and he has been a constant companion ever since.
