Vykan was an Umbaran Sith Master with an unparalleled knowledge of the rituals and lore of the Sith. He was a devout follower of the teachings of the Prophets of the Dark Side and the Rule of the Strong.

Biography

Early life (33 BBY–[[24 BBY to 1 BBY|18 BBY)

Vykan was born on Umbara during the twilight years of the Old Republic. Though his Force-sensitivity was discovered early his parents were deeply distrustful of the Jedi Order and refused their permission for Vykan to become a Jedi. Vykan grew up angry and resentful of the Jedi, believing they had shunned him as inadequate.

After the Clone Wars Vykan was taken from his home by agents of the Inquisitorius as part of the Great Jedi Purge. Rather than be killed, Vykan was given over to the Prophets of the Dark Side on Dromund Kaas to be trained in the ways of the dark side of the Force.

Prophet of the Dark Side (18 BBY–4 ABY)

For the next two decades Vykan trained with the Prophets in isolation from the rest of the galaxy. Despite his potential Vykan never went on to become an Inquisitor or an Emperor's Hand. He believed his loyalty was first and foremost to the dark side. After his training was complete Vykan remained on Dromund Kaas to serve as a teacher himself, while in his spare time pursuing ever more mysterious aspects of Sith lore.

By the time the Galactic Civil War began Vykan was well versed in the history of the Sith Order. Vykan was one of the Prophets who followed Kadann to Bosthirda after he foresaw the death of the Emperor and the collapse of the Empire at the Battle of Endor.

The lone Prophet (4 ABY–11 ABY)

Although most of the Prophets were to remain on Bosthirda until they were massacred by and Lumiya and [1], Vykan left sometime before, soon after the formation of the New Republic. During the next few years his journeys took him to many places as he sought to further his knowledge of the Sith.

In 11 ABY he learned from his former contacts within the Empire of the formation of the Dark Brotherhood. Vykan was encouraged by the rumoured attempt at reforming of the Sith Order and in particular it's apparent willingness to cast aside what Vykan believed to be the archaic principles of the Rule of Two. The Prophet chose to join the new sect, hopeful the new brotherhood might further his Mastery of the Sith teachings.

The corruption of Xanos Zorrixor (12 ABY–14 ABY)

The mission of the early brotherhood was simple: to rebuild. A millennia of obeisance to the Rule of Two had bled the ranks of the Sith dry, almost to the point of extinction. Though the young brotherhood had aligned itself with a rogue faction of the Imperial Remnant this as only to serve its economic and financial needs. There was still the main problem of finding new acolytes, willing or unwilling, and training them. To this end Vykan and others were dispatched to search out Force-sensitives who could be trained as the new generation of Sith warriors.

In his quest, Vykan discovered a Falleen by the name of Xanos Zorrixor. At the time Xanos was an aspiring Jedi Knight who believed he was being held back by the Jedi Masters. Vykan felt he had found a prospective student true to his own feelings, for he too hated the Jedi for supposedly holding him back. Vykan subverted Xanos's views and convinced him to join the brotherhood, becoming his Master.

The Zoraan Uprising (17 ABY)

In 17 ABY Lord Zoraan instigated a rebellion against the Imperial Remnant. The uprising was a failure and has largely been attributed to the Dark Lord of the Sith having been driven insane. During the attempted uprising Vykan was one of the Grand Master's handful of supporters, firmly believing it was time the Dark Brotherhood cast off the yoke of Imperial control and carve itself a domain of its own. Vykan's views were not unusual and many within the brotherhood shared the belief the Remnant's grip on the Sith Order had grown to strong. Nevertheless, the rebellion failed, the clans deciding it was foolish to challenge the Remnant directly.

Among those who led the opposition to Archibald Zoraan's plan was the Krath sorcerer Trevarus Caerick. Trevarus recognised the brotherhood was too weak to challenge the Remnant, believing subtly was required, not a full blown rebellion. Despite Xanos's faith in his Master's abilities, he was forced to side with Trevarus Caerick, agreeing Zoraan's plan and Vykan were misled.

Master and apprentice had ended up on opposite sides. Though Vykan survived the conflict, his stance had left his position within the brotherhood untenable, and he left in exile, departing Imperial Space. Vykan left without his apprentice, deeply bitter that his apprentice had sided with the views of Trevarus Caerick than his own. Vykan had taught Xanos only the strong should survive; he did not want an apprentice who cowered in the face of superior odds.
