This beating gave Krane two scars, one physical, and the other emotional. Up until that beating, Krane had never received much attention from the trader. But the beating had taught him that the trader had no feelings. It also told Krane that he had to escape. So, after being healed by one of the old women on the barge, Krane took his chance, waiting until the barge landed in a city port, said goodbye to his friends, and escaped.
