He just knew it and his brother also did, they then involved in intense 1on1 dogfight. But his brother was so good, even in his nimble X-Wing, he managed to cripple JS' TIE Interceptor, damaged the cannon and the scanner system. He's a goodhearted though, he didn't kill JS although he had his chance, instead his twin brother offered JS to join him to build the New Republic Navy which absolutely ignored by JS.
