Biography
Raised on Bastion, Arik Shathis grew up in the proverbial shadow of Coruscant. His father headed a leading biotech concern and his mother was a prominent physician. It was always assumed he would enter the medical field, even by Arik himself. He harbored dreams of being a researcher, making major breakthroughs that changed the face of medical science. He graduated Valedictorian from his preparatory school and attended the prestigious Imperial University on Bastion. He majored in exobiology and biotechnology and looked forward to a bright future. He graduated Summa Cum Laude, barely beating out his childhood best friend Hiale Serros, who pursued the same field of study. Prior to moving into research he was required to complete a one-year internship at a local medical center. This is when his life changed forever.
A mere two months after starting his internship he had found his true calling. He decided to forgo research in favor of providing personalized care to patients. After completing his residency he became a full-time physician, specializing in rare communicable diseases. For three years he rose in prominence, become renown as an expert in his field. He became the head of his department with control over his staff, and immediately brought his old friend Hiale Serros aboard. That was when he life changed a second time, for the worse.
Arik and Hiale were working the case of a patient with a degenerative neurological disease. It affected motor control, causing unsteadiness at first but eventually becoming full-blown tremors and, finally, effecting vision and speech. Oddly, this disease could be transmitted by touch, unlike most conditions of its kind. Additionally, it was a cross-species disease. A lab accident led to both doctors being infected. They managed to develop a treatment to keep themselves from infecting others, but were unable to develop a cure. The hospital was unwilling to fire them after all they had done, and so they were moved into administrative positions, eventually running the entire medical center. Arik took that knowledge and moved into government, eventually overseeing all of Bastion's main continent. However, as his illness progressed and it became apparent to the public that he was sick, he found himself ousted from politics.
He decided to leave Bastion and move to a recently colonized world. His search for a home brought him to Tarthos, where he practiced as a physician. When an epidemic struck, he contacted Hiale for assistance and they soon found themselves in the position of saviors for the planet. The mayor was struck down in the plague and, before Arik knew it, he was in charge of the local government.
