Shiran Kastav is a Miraluka Jedi in House Hoth of Clan Odan-Urr. A former Dark Jedi and combatant during the Fall of Antei, he went rogue shortly after the fighting ended. During this time he was captured and held as a political prisoner of the militaristic O’reen. Chosen to be part of a mission to retrieve Team Echo, led by Kintan Strider, Shiran managed to break free of the O’reenians and join Odan-Urr.
Character History
Early Life
- "Do not remember the destruction of Katarr. Remember what it taught you instead."
- ―Kast Proverb
Shiran was born in 9 ABY to the Kast, a group of nomadic peoples originally native to Katarr, the Miralukan colony world that was rendered barren and lifeless by Darth Nihlus during the First Jedi Purge in 3952 BBY. Having become stranded on Alpheridies, the Kast wander the plains, steppes and deserts of most of the southern continents. Because of their heritage, they have a deep respect for the Living Force and the Jedi, seeing them as saviors against the Dark Side – whose awesome destructive power they know only too well.
Before his fifth birthday, Shiran and his older sister Cever were both found to be strong in the Force, and following their traditions both of them were inducted into a local Jedi Academy to learn the ways of the Force, where Shiran was apprenticed under the Human Master Orett. Shiran proved to be a gifted but arrogant and headstrong student, often disobeying orders and going his own way. This attitude did not make him any friends in the Academy, and what started as a rivalry between Shiran and the other students became a bitter feud.
In 24 ABY, at the age of 15, Shiran and a dozen of his fellow students were assigned a training mission to capture a criminal who had gone into hiding on Alpheridies, Shiran disobeyed orders and elected to kill this criminal instead of capturing him. Angry with Shiran for his disobedience and afraid of reprisals from the Academy, the other students attacked Shiran before he could complete his task. The battle raged for hours, leaving the criminal enough time to escape while Shiran defended himself from his fellow students. When the smoke cleared, Shiran's quarry had fled, he had killed four of his fellow students, and gravely injured many more. One of them managed to get a message to Master Orett letting him know what had happened; Shiran's fate was sealed.
Panicked, Shiran fled Alpheridies with his Master hot on his heels. Shiran and Orett battled in space above Alpheridies, but Shiran managed to damage the life support and engines on Orett's fighter, leaving him to die as Shiran escaped to hyperspace. With the deaths of his fellow students and his Master on his conscience, Shiran again wandered through space for months before he received a vision, showing him a star system he'd never seen before. The vision was of the Antei system, home of the Dark Brotherhood.
Descent into Darkness
- Acolyte: "I'm going to kill you, Jedi."
- Shiran: "You'll try."
- ―Exchange between Shiran and one of his fellow Acolytes (now deceased)
Shiran followed his vision and travelled to Antei, joining the Dark Brotherhood. Training at the Shadow Academy was a completely new experience for Shiran. His former allegiance to the Light made him a target for both the instructors and his fellow students. He was frequently ambushed and attacked by fellow students or given seemingly impossible tasks to complete by his instructors only to have to endure days of torture as punishment. In order to survive, Shiran had to rely on being stealthy, vicious, and able to outsmart the other apprentices. He was often able to outmaneuver them, relying of a sense of stealth and using the surroundings to his advantage whenever possible.
After his training, Shiran was assigned to the Obelisk Order to serve House Marka Ragnos. His skill in battle, tactical ability and potential power in the Force quickly brought him to the attention of several Dark Jedi as an Apprentice. Most notable among these was Trevarus Caerick, who took the Miraluka under his wing as his Apprentice. Training under Caerick was tougher than he could ever imagine, given the power that he had. In this time Shiran was subjected to battle training that lasted for weeks at a time. When he wasn't training he was in one of Caerick's many libraries - studying the history of the Dark Side.
The training paid off, and in 27 ABY Shiran was inducted into the Night Hawks, sharing leadership of the battle-team with Faeril Munlear when fate conspired to test Shiran's resolve yet again. When the Yuuzhan Vong invaded Dark Brotherhood space in 28 ABY Shiran became acutely aware of the hole in the Force that Vong have. Fighting a terrifying enemy that has no connection to the Force was Shiran's baptism by fire. Travelling with Master Caerick and two other apprentices, Shiran fought through the Naga Sadow flagship, which had been boarded, down to the starfighter docks. Flying down to the surface of Antei to continue the fight, Shiran fought on the front lines - he was a whirling dervish on the battlefield, attacking without regard for either his own or his companion's safety. The battle lasted for hours, culminating in Shiran inflicting a serious injury on one of his friends, and the retreat of the Dark Brotherhood into the Shroud.

The Rukye Nomads
The Rukye (Rukh-ee) Nomads are a collection of approximately 35,000 Miraluka who have nomadic routes along the southern hemisphere of Alpheridies. They are a separate cultural group from ‘other’ Miraluka, in the their culture is based upon the old cultures and traditions that were native to Katarr before it was destroyed.
The Rukye are divided into many small clans and tribes, but three major divisions of Ruk’ie can be found, each with distinctive characteristics. These are the Kast, the Tercik, and Cheyien. Each of these clans has one city where their leader resides, and where all members of that clan can come together for large festivals and meetings.
