Character History
Early Life
- "Because your child represents that which we cannot accept in our midst, I sentence him to death by exile."
- ―Kast Elder Council Member
Shiran was born 9 ABY in Kast, a small remote city in the mountains of Alpheridies notable for its harsh climate, inhospitable people and that everyone in the city is descended from refugees of Katarr, the Miralukan colony world that was rendered barren and lifeless by Darth Nihlus during the First Jedi Purge in 3952 BBY. Stranded on Alpheridies, these Katarri refugees settled in the mountains and became a closed, isolated community with respect for the Force, but mistrustful of anyone being able to use it. Any member of their community found to be strong in the Force would immediately be sentenced to death by exile, but the local Jedi caught wind of this practice and regularly patrol the mountains around Kast in order to pick up survivors and potential recruits.
So it went for Shiran that as a young boy he was found to be strong in the Force, and after being ripped from his family he was exiled. He wandered for a few days before being picked up by a local patrol and brought to a Jedi Academy in another province far away, where he would begin learning the ways of the Force. He was apprenticed under another Miraluka named Orett, but Shiran proved to be a gifted but difficult student. Bitter at having been forced to leave everything behind that he loved, he became headstrong and often disobeyed orders. This attitude did not make him any friends in the Academy, and what started as a rivalry between Shiran and the other students became a bitter feud.
In 24 ABY, at the age of 15, Shiran and a dozen of his fellow students were assigned a training mission to capture a criminal who had gone into hiding on Alpheridies, Shiran disobeyed orders and elected to kill this criminal instead of capturing him. Angry with Shiran for his disobedience and afraid of reprisals from the Academy, the other students attacked Shiran before he could complete his task. The battle raged for hours, leaving the criminal enough time to escape while Shiran defended himself from his fellow students. When the smoke cleared, Shiran's quarry had fled, he had killed four of his fellow students, and gravely injured many more. One of them managed to get a message to Master Orett letting him know what had happened; Shiran's fate was sealed.
Panicked, Shiran fled Alpheridies with his Master hot on his heels. Shiran and Orett battled in space above Alpheridies, but Shiran managed to damage the life support and engines on Orett's fighter, leaving him to die as Shiran escaped to hyperspace. With the deaths of his fellow students and his Master on his conscience, Shiran again wandered through space for months before he received a vision, showing him a star system he'd never seen before. The vision was of the Antei system, home of the Dark Brotherhood.
Joining the Brotherhood
- "You're not gonna last long here, Jedi."
- ―Shadow Academy Initiate (Deceased)
Shiran followed his vision and travelled to Antei, joining the Dark Brotherhood. Training at the Shadow Academy was a completely new experience for Shiran. His former allegiance to the Light made him a target for both the instructors and his fellow students. He was frequently ambushed and attacked by fellow students or given seemingly impossible tasks to complete by his instructors only to have to endure days of torture as punishment. It was during this time that Shiran had become friends with a fellow student named Tebri Aurren. Tebri had a weak connection to the Force, but her father paid for her entrance to the Academy in order to increase his own standing. She was very resourceful and furtive, however, and these skills would help her survive in the Academy.
Shiran and Tebri became as close as friends could become in the Academy, each helping the other to survive. After years of training both of the were assigned to Clan Naga Sadow. Tebri was assigned to the administrative caste of the Clan - her weak Force powers were not worthy of further development. Shiran was assigned to the Obelisk Order to serve House Marka Ragnos. His skill in battle and potential power in the Force quickly brought him to the attention of several Dark Jedi as an Apprentice. Most notable among these was Trevarus Caerick, who took the Miraluka under his wing as his Apprentice. Training under Caerick was tougher than he could ever imagine, given the power that he had. In this time Shiran was subjected to battle training that lasted for weeks at a time. When he wasn't training he was in one of Caerick's many libraries - studying the history of the Dark Side.
The training paid off, and in 27 ABY Shiran was inducted into the Night Hawks, sharing leadership of the battle-team with Faeril Munlear when fate conspired to test Shiran's resolve yet again...
