- "A principled youth doesn't live to adulthood without being sheltered. I was neither principled or sheltered."
- ―Xe'laah Qouessi on principles
Xe'laah Qouessi is a Nautolan female of below average height and average weight who is unaffiliated and identifies herself as a Vanguard. She originates from the planet of Glee Anselm where she lived out her tadpole phase with her father. Xe'laah would live on the planet until she was ten standard years old. Then an unfortunate accident led to the young lady being separated from her parents. This has led to a series of cultural and visual changes that differentiate Xe'laah from most of her kind.
Character History
Early Life
Xe'laah Qouessi's birth marked the beginning of the twelveth year after the Battle of Yavin. Unusually, the [[starwarsNautolan|Nautolan] was born with a red hue to her skin, a rarity among the species. Her father was an attaché assigned to her mother, a famed diplomat. Xe'laah doesn't have many memories from this part of her life, due to her brain still developing and it appearing to be so long ago.
In her tadpole stage, her father was her primary care giver. This allowed her mother to continue her work as a diplomat, which payed the bills and then some. Meetings with politicans often led to the family receiving gifts for the young tadpole. Xe'laah would come to appreciate these gifts once she had emerged from that stage. Most prominently were a series of fabulous outfits that made her the envy of her class at school, where she excelled.
The Gand Incident
Young Xe'laah was accompanying her mother and father on a diplomatic visit to the mysterious planet of Gand. Being so isolationist, even getting access to the planet was a coup for the family. With the ammonia filled atmosphere, the trio had to wear breathing masks to allow them to traverse the planet safely. All was seemingly going to plan. After some initial translation issues, Xe'laah's mother was really beginning to form a rapport with her counterpart. One day, in particular, Xe'laah was with her father, visiting a local market to stock up on supplies for the week. Everything seemed to be normal. Then all of a sudden, panic erupted as one Gand rushed by with some sort of container in his hand. He was being pursued by staff wielding Gand. In the confusion, the young girl became separated from her father. Xe'laah wandered for hours, unable to find her father.
Lost and afraid, the young girl slept in an abandoned hut for the night. At the crack of dawn the following day, Xe'laah was up, ready to find her parents. Deciding to head north, the young girl imagined she'd find them soon and everything would be alright. The mists of Gand really hampered her vision, ensuring the Nautolan would have to take frequent breaks in her search. Her parents were all she'd ever known, her father in particular. Though her mother had been setting work aside for her daughter regularly. The thought of losing them struck straight at the young girl's heart.
Finding nothing, Xe'laah turned back at midday, wanting to return to the little hut she had slept in the night before. Without the certainty of her parents being around, any small comfort the girl could find was useful. It was a long, arduous trek, but just as she was about to collapse with exhaustion, she made it. Learning her lesson, Xe'laah made sure to break more often to put less of a strain on her little legs. An unsuccessful first day of searching over, a sliver of hope faded away.
Xe'laah was sure her parents would be missing her. The trouble was she didn't know her way back to the village. She had already exhausted one possibility, so it stood to reason that in the next three days she would find her way. Heading to the east, there was less frequent mist, though the Nautolan took breaks to protect her legs and lidless eyes all the same.
Exile to the Stars
After ten years, living on the outside of Gand society, adopting their culture and learning their language, Xe'laaah felt like a de facto Gand. However, this was not the case. Though she had proven useful to the Findsmen, an order of Force-sensitive Gand, this often placed her at odds with those who were kept as slaves in Gand culture. The Nautolan had even been referred to as the Alien of Death, owing to her alien status and the punishment handed out for attempting to flee from their bondage.
One day, Xe'laah was learning with the Findsmen, who in return for her help had provided her with food, shelter, protection and even lessons in how to access the mystical power known as The Force. The alien female preferred non-violent applications of the Force. The idea of hurting people wasn't something she could get behind. Xe'laah preferred to play a supporting role, as the Findsmen sometimes needed her help and would offer rarer pieces of knowledge in exchange for help. This resulted in the Nautolan being able to accomplish feats beyond the normal use of some powers.
There was a mission that proved to be a disaster though, a runaway had taken a Findsman's staff, something held in the utmost regard among the group. Xe'laah was to assist in the recovery of the object. It had seemed like a perfectly normal mission at the outset, though things would soon change for the worse. Upon tracking the target down, the Findsman found that his staff was not in the possession of the supposed thief. This set him off, pummeling the other Gabd repeatedly. Xe'laah was outraged, she'd never seen this side of them. All she did was help them find lost Gand and return them to safety. Could it be that they were much more sinister than she had been led to believe? Refusing to allow the beating to continue, Xe'laah accessed the mind of the Findsman and convinced him to leave. Rushing to the side of the bloodied Gand, she did her best to heal his injuries but it was too late.
The memory of this seared into her brain, Xe'laah caught up to the Findsman and accosted him. She was shocked to learn that this was normal, she had been enabling wrongdoing in order to gain power. Returning to her camp, she was shocked to find it overrun with Findsmen, the one she had thought was just a fallen brother had reported her. Her food supply had been decimated, the hut she lived in set ablaze. Knowing she had to get away, she snuck back towards the city. Nothing but the clothes on her back to her name, the Nautolan arrived to find the city guard was looking for her. Using her knowledge of the streets, she snuck to the arrivals landing pads, hoping to sneak away on a starship. Stowing aboard a cargo freighter, it wasn't until the vessel reached its destination of Glee Anselm that she was discovered. Being recognised as the daughter of her mother, she was given a lift to a planet of her choice. The pilot was thankful to Xe'laah's mother for helping save her career and wanted to return the favour. Xe'laah asked to be taken to Hosnian Prime. The world was the current home of the New Republic Senate. There Xe'laah was able to earn a job as an aide to Chancellor Lanever Villecham, the peace focused leader of the New Republic. As a result, Xe'laah would accompany the Chancellor, picking up much of his own philosophy and adopting it as her own. Her time spent on Hosnian Prime was short, leaving towards the end of 34 ABY. Upon hearing of the destruction of her former home, Xe'laah wept for hours.
