Species in Star Wars are a big deal. Their existence is something that separates the Lore from other Science Fiction, where even if a culture is only mentioned once, people will flock to try and create characters from it. Each Species has something unique about them, from being able to regenerate limbs, to being able to breathe underwater! It’s fascinating, really, but also creates a struggle for us to incorporate into a balanced system. And on top of that, we don’t use dice rolls or algorithms for our system and game. So, “balancing” becomes subjective to the ones in charge of organizing and maintaining the system.

Wookiees: An Example

Let's take Wookiees for example. As you can see below in their entry, Wookiees are extremely powerful. However, it never really made sense to say that ALL Wookiees got a “+1” to Might. +1 to Might becomes relative to...what exactly? Average Human strength? How do we even? (On a scale of 1-11, you can’t even). Instead, you see that the language focuses more on “feats” (oohh, that’s why they call them that??) of strength like holding open a blast door.

With that strength and size, of course, comes the sour fact that you can’t really fit a Wookiee in your secret compartment in the cargo hold. They are also kind of hard to get to blend in with even a crowd of mixed humanoids. This is made apparent with the second species feat, and provides a balance to the merit. You will see this present in every Species.

Hybrids

Hybrid species are not very common, but have been known to appear in Canon content. For example, Humans and Twi'leks have born hybrid children in the Clone Wars animated series. Currently, we have very specific requirements for the treatment of Hybrid combinations in our system. The most notable requirement is for the desired races to be of similar origin, that means Reptilian Humanoids cannot mate with Mammalian Humanoids.

The way we handle this is that a Hybrid member picks a dominant Species as their selected Species on the Character Creation Tool. Then, in their Physical Description Field, they can elaborate on the cosmetic differences their character is afforded based on the notable traits of their secondary Species. Hybrids only allow for the combining of two species in this manner, and both must be from the approved species list.

For more specific details for incorporating a Hybrid selection for your character, refer to the Species section of the Character Sheet Approval Guidelines.

In short:

  • A hybrid Species will only get Feats from their Primary Species. They do not get Feats of the Secondary.
  • A hybrid Species can have cosmetic elements of their Secondary Species worked into their Physical Description.
  • A hybrid Species can only have two species utilized. Both of these species must be from the list below.
  • Hybrids can only be formed by the same-typed species. e.g. Humanoids can only hybridize with humanoids. Reptilians can only hybridize with Reptilians. A Mammalian Humanoid cannot hybridize with a Mammalian Non-humanoid.

Description:

Aleena were short, reptilian bipeds with large eyes and wide mouths full of small, sharp teeth. Aleena's bodies were long compared to their short arms and stubby legs. They possessed exceptional reflexes as well as a fast metabolism which allowed them to convert food into energy very rapidly in order to escape predators on their harsh home planet.

Unique Species Feat: Bite Size

Due to {{gender:his,her}} small form, {{member}} is able to fit or stow away into smaller areas and confined spaces. While this makes {{gender:him,her}} better suited towards scouting and moving about unseen, {{gender:his,her}} body mass makes {{gender:him,her}} subject to the harsh realities of physics when utilizing their Might against non-small form species, or utilizing their Stamina to cover the same distances or carry out tasks that require physical stamina.

Unique Species Feat: Nine Lives

Aleena are known to be easily excitable, and will often rush into danger before truly knowing the full scope of it. Fortunately, they have evolved to possess heightened-reflexes in their spry physiology. {{member}} is often able to avoid impending physical harm thanks to {{gender:his,her}} elevated reaction time, even if it is {{gender:his,her}} own fault for being in danger in the first place.

Anzati

Anzati
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Proboscis
  • Bulbous noses
  • Long lives - avg. 800 years
  • Regenerates quicker
  • Prone to substance abuse

Description:

The Anzati were Human in appearance, with bulbous noses, flared nostrils, and grayish-hued skin. Two tentacle-like proboscises curl out and extended from their cheeks, and can be retracted to blend better with Humans.

1.5 to 1.7 meters

Unique Species Feat: ‘Soup’ For You

{{member}} can drink the ‘soup’ of an enemy to regain energy. Thus, {{member}} can use Mind Trick for the sole purpose of temporarily immobilizing a victim they wish to feed on and the stronger the victim's Resolve the more difficult the Mind Trick is. Feeding requires unbroken concentration, however, leaving {{gender:him,her,them}} vulnerable during the process.

Unique Species Feat: Addictive Tendencies

While not all Anzati are addicted to feeding on other beings' ‘soup,’ the species as a whole has developed a tendency for being drawn to addictive substances. As a result, {{member}} is more susceptible to persuasion or influence in a scenario that involves the potential for substance abuse or indulgence.

Arkanian

Arkanian
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

Description:

The Arkanians were a Near-Human species which resided primarily on the frozen planet of Arkania in the Perave system of the Colonies region of the galaxy.

1.8 meters

Unique Species Feat: Infrared Vision

Arkanians have evolved on a dark and frigid homeworld and, as a result, {{member}} is capable of seeing into the infrared spectrum. This gives {{gender:him,her}} exceptional vision even on the darkest of nights.

Unique Species Feat: Sunglasses At Night

While the conditions of their homeworld have allowed them to see into the infrared spectrum, their eyes are sensitive to sources of extreme heat. This forces members of the Arkanian species to use blinders on worlds with hotter suns. When looking at sources of intense heat, {{member}} is effectively blind until {{gender:he,she}} shields {{gender:his,her}} vision from sources of extreme heat.

Barabel

Barabel
Classification: Reptilian

Notable Traits:

  • Two stomachs
  • Dark scales
  • Immune to blaster’s stun
  • Able to shed tail
  • Retractable claws
  • Needle sharp teeth
  • Cold-blooded

Description:

Barabels were a species of sentient cold-blooded reptilians native to the dark, murky world Barab I. A highly aggressive and territorial species, Barabels who traveled off their homeworld often found work as fringers or soldiers.

Average Height:

1.9 to 2.2 meters

Languages:

Unique Species Feat: Defensive Measures

Barabels are covered in tough, dark scales that are resilient against the stun effects of a blaster. Instead, anyone firing blasters set on stun would find that {{member}} is able to shrug off the attacks while the projectiles reflect off {{gender:his,her}} scales.

Unique Species Feat: Unapologetic

A common occurrence among members of the Barabel species, the concept of apologies, whether for a misdeed or sympathetic reasons, is unknown to {{member}}. Lacking this skill might reflect poorly on {{gender:his,her}} personal image, especially when an apology is not given for a misdeed on their part.

Bothan

Bothan
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Mood-sensitive fur
  • Craves intrigue and subterfuge
  • Tapered pointed ears

Description:

Bothans were furry mammalian anthropoids, about 1.5 meters tall. Hailing from Bothawui and several colonies, Bothans differed in facial appearance and body structure with canine, feline, and equine features. They were known for being master politicians and spies, craving intrigue and subterfuge.

1.4 to 1.5 meters

Unique Species Feat: Sabaac Face

Bothan culture has evolved around the species’ penchant for politics and social manipulation. Having been born into that culture, {{member}} is able to use {{gender:his,her}} Deception to appear and remain unrattled during potentially sensitive situations that involve deception or manipulation.

Unique Species Feat: Bad Reputation

The same traits that make Bothans excellent diplomats and spies also result in a rather untrustworthy image for members of the species. Placing their personal interests above all others, Bothans are known for adhering to the “Bothan Way” to the point of backstabbing and beguiling anyone to get what they desire. Despite {{member}}’s best intentions, {{gender:he,she}} is often accused of sharing this generalization and can be labeled as untrustworthy.

Bpfasshi

Bpfasshi

Description:

Bpfasshi were Near-Humans native to Bpfassh.

Average Height:

1.8 meters

Unique Species Feat: Jedi Contempt

Due to an incident that occurred between the Bpfasshi and the Jedi during the Clone Wars, the Bpfasshi species have held onto a mistrust for the Jedi Order. As a result, {{member}} is less sympathetic when interacting with a follower of the light side of the Force and lacks trust in light-sided members.

Unique Species Feat: Hatred Against Jedi

Feeding on the same mistrust and animosity Bpfasshi foster towards the Jedi Order, {{member}} can channel {{gender:his,her,their}} Rage Power without any concentration when engaging in combat with someone they believe is a practitioner of the Jedi Order.

Description:

The Cathar were a species of feline, bipedal humanoids native to Cathar, a planet of savannahs and rough uplands. They were known for their loyalty, passion, and temper. Quick and powerful, they were considered great warriors and dedicated, efficient predators.

1.5 to 1.9 meters

Unique Species Feat: Blood Hunt

As a natural predator, {{member}} can use {{gender:his,her}} inherent abilities to {{gender:his,her}} advantage when stalking a target. Possessing a feline grace to move about silently, {{member}} is efficient at stalking and hunting quarries.

Unique Species Feat: Temper Of A Lion

Cathar are recognized as a proud species bound to high moral values and principles. When observing acts that violate {{gender:his,her}} values, {{member}} can be quick to anger and let {{gender:his,her}} temper take control of {{gender:his,her}} actions.

Chiss

Description:

The Chiss were a tall, blue-skinned Near-Human civilization from the planet Csilla in the Unknown Regions.

1.6 to 2.1 meters

Unique Species Feat: Sore Thumbs

As the Chiss are fairly isolationist in nature, the sighting of one is a fairly rare occurrence. {{member}}’s telltale blue skin and red eyes are seen as exotic qualities to most other species. Thus, {{member}} finds increased difficulty with blending into crowds.

Unique Species Feat: Wise Beyond Years

Members of the Chiss species mature at a faster rate in their society. Disciplined under a well-structured upbringing, {{member}} recognizes the value of propriety and self-control better than most species. As a result of intense schooling, {{member}} has a habit of simply knowing things about the galaxy and its occupants that others might have overlooked, and can adapt to new concepts outside of the norm at a quicker rate.

Clawdite

Classification: Reptilian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Shape shifting ability
  • Green to yellow skin hues
  • Yellow slitted eyes

Description:

Clawdites were a humanoid sentient species native to the planet of Zolan. They were one of the few shape-shifting species in the galaxy, and were sometimes referred to as Changelings.

Average Height:

1.6 to 1.8 meters

Languages:

Unique Species Feat: Genetic Manipulation

Genetic manipulation has gifted the Clawdite species with the extremely rare ability to change their appearance. Mimicking the appearance of similarly-shaped species, {{member}} can change the color and texture of {{gender:his,her}} skin and eyes to appear nearly indistinguishable from the target species. However, the Clawdite’s shifting abilities cause great discomfort and, as a result, intense concentration is required to maintain the disguise.

Unique Species Feat: Pragmatic

Clawdites are a solitary species who prefer isolation and shun the company of others unless it is to their benefit. {{member}} holds pragmatic views of the galaxy, and is often mistrustful of others and suspicious of their motives. The stigma is not mutually exclusive, though: other species are untrusting of the shapeshifters.

Coynite

Coynite
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Hairy
  • Shaggy mane
  • Forehead ridges
  • Clawed hands
  • Long lives - avg. 250 years
  • Wide flared noses

Description:

Coynites were large bipeds, and typically quite strong. They had fine gold, white, or black hair over their entire bodies. Their heads were crowned with a shaggy mane, with bony forehead ridges in place of eyebrows. Their faces possessed protruding chins, wide, flared noses, and deep-set eyes. They possessed clawed hands.

Average Height:

2.0 to 3.0 meters

Unique Species Feat: En’Tra’Sol

Following an extraordinarily strict law system, {{member}} is bound to the code of conduct known as En’Tra’Sol. This law forbids {{member}} from showing signs of weakness, with cowardice being the prime example of weakness. When issued a challenge in single combat, {{member}} is bound to accept it with {{gender:his,her}} honor at stake if {{gender:he,she}} refuses. Declining a challenge results in {{member}} losing focus, having broken En’Tra’Sol.

Unique Species Feat: Lion’s Mane

{{member}} recognizes the importance of social status, which is reflected in the length of a Coynite’s mane. Respected and successful warriors are known to grow longer manes with increasingly intricate braids in Coynite culture, thus {{member}} respects other species with long hair and shaggy coats. However, {{member}} frowns on bald or hairless beings.

Cragmoloid

Cragmoloid
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Large Trunk
  • Tusks
  • Flappy Ears
  • Tall and Large
  • Red Eyes

Description:

Cragmoloids were large bipedals pachydermoids. With long manipulative trunks, two to four tusks, clawed fingers, and clawed toes, they are a proud honor-bound species, with heavy emphasis on caring for their “clan”. They have thick skin, ranging from grey to pink, beady red eyes, and large flappy ears.

Average Height:

2.5 to 3.0 meters

Unique Species Feat: Pachyderm's Promise

Being a proud, honorable people, Cragmoloids have an innate dislike of deception with a high value placed upon keeping their word. As such, {{member}} has a strong inclination to honor their promises once made, to the best of their ability.

Unique Species Feat: Away From The Herd

Cragmoloid society was organized into clans, with a tight bond between family, such that they were prone to depression when separated. {{member}} is prone to bouts of sadness when separated from their "people", be them other Cragmoloids or close friends.

Dashade

Dashade
Classification: Reptilian

Notable Traits:

  • Dark skin
  • Powerful claws
  • Partial Force-resistance
  • Radiation resistance
  • Dissipates heat
  • Lamprey-like mouths

Description:

Dashade were tall reptilians with dark skin, lamprey-like mouths, and powerful claws. They were resistant to radiation. They also had an ability to dissipate heat which made them hard to detect using standard life-form sensors.

Average Height:

1.7 to 2.0 meters

Unique Species Feat: Shadow Killer

Despite being a hulking behemoth in a crowd, {{member}} is able to move undetected to {{gender:his,her}} intended goal. Often under employment as elite assassins and mercenaries, members of the Dashade species are able to dissipate heat, making {{gender:him,her}} difficult to detect using sensors or other detection methods based on thermal heat.

Unique Species Feat: Devourer

{{member}} possesses an insatiable hunger for the life-essence of {{gender:his,her}} foes. While this naturally makes {{gender:him,her}} prone to unwarranted aggression in order to consume the essence of {{gender:his,her}} enemies, it also allows {{gender:him,her}} to recover from wounds quicker after devouring the essence of {{gender:his,her}} victims.

Devaronian

Devaronian
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Red, brown, green or white skin
  • Long pointed ears
  • Two horns (male)
  • Bald (male)
  • Hair (female)
  • Two dark circles on forehead (female)

Description:

Devaronians are a sentient species from the planet Devaron. They exhibit great sexual dimorphism, with the males being bald and sporting horns, and the hornless females displaying a full head of hair.

Average Height:

1.9 meters

Unique Species Feat: Pick Your Poison

Devaronians possess silver-based blood type with two livers filtering out most toxins. This makes {{member}} more resistant to toxins and poisons that are inflicted through the bloodstream, and allows {{gender:him,her}} to consume foodstuffs that are otherwise potent to other species.

Unique Species Feat: The Face You Can't Hide

Devaronians are recognizable as a dimorphic species within the galaxy, the differences between their genders more distinct than simple genetics. The horned, bald males stand out in a crowd, while the females still have vestigial bumps that give them away. As a result, it is difficult for {{member}} to disguise {{gender:himself,herself}} in terms of appearance and even more so when trying to pose as the opposite gender.

Dowutin

Dowutin

  • Great strength

Description:

The Dowutin are a large race of humanoids native to the planet of Dowut in the Core Worlds. They were aggressive-looking with chin horns, large claws and thick skin, usually brown. They were long-lived and it was said that they never stop growing. They were often solitary creatures who took pride in their great strength.

Average Height:

2.2 meters

Unique Species Feat: A Not-So-Delicate Touch

Dowutin were known for their brutish strength. {{member}} can leverage their immense size to perform temporary feats of preternatural strength without the need of the Force for the duration of the instant. This can range from holding open a blast door to lifting a heavy object. Their sheer size could also be a hindrance, making it difficult to fit in places and use furniture made for normal-sized species.

Unique Species Feat: Have You Seen My Glasses

Evolving in the frigid, windswept tundras of Dowut left the Dowutin species with a poor eyesight. While they can see well enough at close to medium range, the horizon is a blur to them. Thankfully, evolution gave them superior senses of hearing and smell, able to pick out lower frequencies and discern additional information through odors.

Draethos

Notable Traits:

  • Blue to purple skin
  • Large teeth outside of mouth
  • Interstitial webbing between fingers
  • Low-light vision
  • Limited telepathy
  • Long lives - avg. 800 years

Description:

Draethos were a predatory humanoid species from the planet Draethos, notable for their long natural lifespans.

Average Height:

1.8 meters

Languages:

Unique Species Feat: As Far As I Can See

{{member}} can see twice as far as Humans in low-light conditions due to {{gender:his,her}} cave dwelling ancestry.

Unique Species Feat: Yabba Dabba Do

The Draethos as a society are slow to evolve and have a strong reliance on tradition. While this makes Draethos society stable as a whole, the concept of change is difficult for members of the Draethos species to grasp. As a result, {{member}} has trouble with understanding changes in other societies.

Dug

Dug
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Small stature
  • Abrasive
  • Long snouts
  • Walk with arms
  • Fleshy tendrils

Description:

The Dug, from the planet Malastare, are a unique species. Possessing four similar limbs with dextrous “fingers”, the Dug walk using their upper limbs and use their lower limbs to hold and grasp things, giving them an inverted appearance to how most species operate. They have fleshy tendrils on their face, much like a mustache, on their elongated faces, as well as loose folds of skin.

Average Height:

1 to 1.5 meters

  • Basic
  • Dug

Unique Species Feat: Mating Call

{{member}} can inflate their loose folds of skin to help amplify their cries and yells. This traditional mating call of the species can be used to startle and intimidate those of other species.

Unique Species Feat: Quadrupedalism

The Dug are an inverted species, walking on their upper limbs while using their lower limbs as hands. All four limbs end in very dexterous appendages, giving {{member}} the ability to use any of them as a hand as needed. However, this unique appearance makes them easily stand out in a crowd and can be off-putting to those not familiar with Dug biology.

Duros

Duros
Classification: Reptilian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Gifted explorers
  • Adventurous and socially gregarious
  • Blue-green skin
  • Red eyes
  • Long, thin and noseless faces

Description:

The Duros were a species of teal-skinned, reptilian humanoids who were gifted explorers, and often became spacers or traders.

Average Height:

1.7 to 2.2 meters

Unique Species Feat: Duro The Explorer

Like all Duros, {{member}} is a gifted space explorer. This makes it easier for {{gender:him,her}} to calculate hyperspace routes, though without special training {{gender:he,she}} would still need to rely on a droid or computer to make all the necessary calculations correctly.

Unique Species Feat: Adventure Time!

{{member}} is more likely to be adventurous and gregarious due to {{gender:his,her}} cultural heritage as a Duros. While this makes {{member}} a more exciting person to be around, it can sometimes get {{member}} and {{gender:his,her}} friends into trouble. That’s how you know it’s an adventure.

Echani

Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Combat-focused society
  • All Echani share a very similar appearance
  • Light hair
  • Pale skin
  • Silver eyes

Description:

The Echani were a Near-Human species that hailed from Eshan. All Echani looked remarkably similar and relied on observing body movements and combat to express themselves and distinguish each other.

Average Height:

1.7 meters

Languages:

  • Basic

Unique Species Feat: But First, I Must Apologize

Like any true Echani, {{member}} considers combat to be a form of self-expression, and {{gender:he,she}} believes that you never really know somebody until you fight them. {{member}} will learn more about {{gender:his,her}} friends’ and enemies’ personalities, emotions and motives through fighting and observing body language, rather than talking or socializing. This is often not well received, and {{member}} will typically be seen as boisterous, undiplomatic and always eager to fight.

Unique Species Feat: Float Like A Butterfly

Echani combat is almost exclusively conducted with little or no armor and melee weaponry, and {{member}} finds it easier to fight in these conditions. {{gender:He,She}} will be hampered by wearing armor or using ranged weapons, making it more difficult to fight effectively when burdened or at a distance.

Elomin

Elomin
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Skin tones range from bright pink to dark purple
  • Horned appearance
  • Very different body organs
  • Obsessed with personal hygiene
  • Driven to create order from chaos

Description:

The Elomin were a species that hailed from the planet Elom. Their children matured rapidly, and they were obsessed with finding order in all things as well as personal hygiene.

Average Height:

1.6 meters

  • Elomin

Unique Species Feat: Order! Order!

Elomin strive to find order in things and create order where none exists. {{member}} is no exception, and {{gender:he,she}} finds it easier to forge diplomatic solutions and create organized and logical methods even when situations appear to be a mess.

Unique Species Feat: Vogue!

{{member}}, like all Elomin, is very concerned with {{gender:his,her}} personal hygiene. From polishing {{gender:his,her}} horns and combing {{gender:his,her}} hair, to maintaining a clean body and appearance, {{gender:he,she}} will be more confident when properly presented. Conversely, {{member}} will suffer from weakened self-confidence when {{gender:he,she}} is dirty or unkempt.

Epicanthix

Epicanthix
Classification: Mammalian Humanoid

Notable Traits:

  • Long lives - avg. 130 years
  • Distinct eye folds
  • Natural tan
  • Dark hair
  • Brown/green eyes

Description:

The Epicanthix were tall, muscular, dark-haired Near-Humans native to the Outer Rim Territories world of Panatha, in the Pacanth Reach. They possessed a genetic immunity to Force-aided mental tricks, and were known as conquerors and warriors.

2.0 meters

Unique Species Feat: Not Listening When You Say...

The Epicanthix have a rare genetic resistance to mental intrusion from the Force. {{member}} has higher Resolve against intrusions of the mind through the Force, such as Force Interrogation and Telepathy, but not against Mind Trick, Illusion, or Terror.

Unique Species Feat: Talk With Your Fists
