Hatched on a glacier known as Hailos on the frozen oceanic world, Ojom - Hugo Siphaar was born to two parents with differing professions and goals in life. His father was a free spirit and an adventurer who missed most of Hugo’s upbringing and adolescent life. He would come home and fill his son’s head with romanticized imagery of vast seas of black where other worlds could materialize with a simple jump through Hyperspace. It seemed glamorous but it was a hard life. Especially if you had a family. For that reason, he was raised by his mother, a diplomat who worked on the Anso Space Station orbiting Ojom. In fact it's through her, Hugo would develop a gift of gab and become familiar with ship operations, starting at an early age. Refining his skills, he also harbored an inherent lust for all things luxurious. Closely watching off-worlders who would come through the station, an assortment and variety of beings that seemed more like works of fiction or figments of his imagination than real, breathing sentients. He saw their wealth, their items, their ships, and wanted them for himself. He wanted it all. To possess influence through material possessions. To foster a greed that would give him an advantage. A power over carefully cultivated relationships with status being a motivator. But he was still young.

Regardless, his mother taught him to be shrewd and cunning. Conniving even. She wasn't dissimilar in that regard. But she also wanted him to embrace the heritage and culture of his people. Reluctantly he agreed to a Shanza - which was a ritual, a rite of passage for Besalisk males. Two or more Besalisk would hunt a carnivorous sea whale his people called Shatterfish due to the way they broke through the ice to eat whatever prey was foolish enough to venture too close to the fissures where the ice was weakest.

To aid him in his quest, Hugo convinced one of the finest warriors of his tribe to go with him on this pilgrimage. Not only was manhood to be awarded that day. But so would be the command of the Gorvok Space Station which was in dire need of leadership. The rite of passage meant very little to Hugo. However, gaining command of the station was the beginning of a long prosperous career. A chance to put into place actions that would lead to an amassed power than few of his species had achieved. That was the true rite of passage.

Morning had broken and what could be seen of the sun shone small in the sky of Ojom. The frozen planet could barely feel the warmth of their sun let alone see its light. But it was enough for the two to set out on their journey. The pilgrimage took two weeks. The first week was spent tracking the animal based on weather and ice patterns. Still, the beast was unpredictable and nearly impossible to track as it stalked from beneath the ice. But like any mammal, it needed oxygen to survive and would find breaks in the ice to not only hunt but to breathe. Vors, the Besalisk that accompanied Hugo devised a plan to wait at one of these holes. When the creature came up for air, he would hit it with an explosive device large enough to obliterate the beast but small enough that the blast wouldn’t endanger them on the ice. They waited for days until their opportune moment would present itself. While Vors was devising a strategy to claim a trophy. Hugo was doing the same, only, his plan wasn’t to share the glory. Rather, it was to seize it. The plan went off without a hitch. The creature came to the surface for air and Vors struck with precision. Driving an explosive harpoon into its thick hide. However, just as the creature surfaced and was rigged to explode. Hugo rushed his companion and shoved him into the water. The Shatterfish circled around and ripped Vors to pieces with its sharp teeth before exploding. The ripple of energy blasted Hugo back and the ice gave way and broke apart, stopping within feet of Hugo.

He stood with a sinister sneer on his face and brushed himself off. He would return to his people with a tooth that had landed on the surface as proof of his accomplishment. He would be praised by his people and granted what he wanted all along. The power to control his destiny.

Hugo Siphaar is a Besalisk in service to the Empire of Seraph. This former Director of Operations and Smuggler with a death sentence on 13 systems is a collector of antiquities and purveyor of luxury. Having a sharp mind and an even quicker tongue. Hugo Siphaar, the corpulent one, has deceptive roots that run deep. Currently serving as the Quaestor of Acclivis Draco, his power and influence within Scholae Palatinae outweighs the hefty death-mark looming over him. Underworld trading and contacts have been key to his success as the ebb and flow of credits being funneled into the Clan's growing economy has been more than welcome. As his belly grows, so does his influence as with four fists, he clutches the scales and watches as they continue to tip in his favor. How far has yet to be seen.

Character History

A Chilling Betrayal

Ojom

Shatterfish

To aid him in his quest, Hugo convinced one of the finest warriors of his tribe to go with him on this pilgrimage. Not only was manhood to be awarded that day. But so would be the command of the Gorvok Space Station which was in dire need of leadership. The rite of passage meant very little to Hugo. However, gaining command of the station was the beginning of a long prosperous career. A chance to put into place actions that would lead to an amassed power than few of his species had achieved. That was the true rite of passage.
