Phutari is a middle aged Dressellian who owns a cantina in the Trader's Quarter of Ord Mantell. He was instrumental in acting as friend and mentor to a young Rasilvenaira StormRaven when she first appeared in the city.

Simple Beginnings

Phutari was born around 42 BBY, on Dressel. His family lived simply, but his parents spent most of their time and what money they got chasing the dream of moving up socially. This meant the children, Phutari and his younger sister, Lishyel, were left to fend for themselves much of the time. Phutari and his sister grew extremely close because of this, and he worked hard to look after her.

During Phutari’s tenth year he slipped away from the family home to go hunting. He had grown rather skilled at hunting small animals that helped to add to the sometimes meager food supplies the children were left with while their parents spent time away. Even when they were around, they weren’t paying much attention to the needs of their children. Phutari felt a prickling sensation at the back of his neck before he had even finished tending to his first kill of the day. He couldn’t understand what it meant beyond that it disturbed him greatly. Without waiting to gather more food, he took off and headed back home.

The increasing sense of dread was understood when he cleared the slight rise in the terrain and was in sight of his home. Dark tendrils of smoke drifted into the air and he ran the rest of the way to the house. The building had been ransacked; the family’s few possessions of any worth were either gone or destroyed. Phutari cared nothing for that; what ripped his heart to shreds that day was the sight of his beloved Lishyel. Her body was unceremoniously tossed to one side, her fragile neck snapped from being slammed into the wall. Grief and rage tore at his mind as he knelt beside her, as well as guilt that nagged at him.

When Phutari was able to finally leave his sister’s side, he also found the bodies of both his parents. Sickened and enraged when he realized from their positions that they were killed trying to defend what he considered meaningless objects, while the one person who meant everything to him was left defenseless to be killed, a young Phutari found himself alone in a harsh world. The chaotic turmoil of his emotions eventually left him drained and confused. Finally, Phutari gathered himself together, searching out the few useful possessions left in the home. Then taking up the bundle of his possessions, and Lishyel’s body, he returned to what had always been his favorite hunting place. He buried his sister there, and spent his first night alone there in quiet meditation.

The Flames of Adversity

Phutari spent five years roaming around Dressel, drifting from one place to another without any real idea of what he was going to do with himself. The young Dressellian scraped by, managing to survive, though life was hard. Usually, his sharp senses kept him one step ahead of those around him, but one day his mind was wandering. He was feeling particularly melancholy and his sister’s death had come back to haunt his thoughts as it did occasionally.

The flames of his anger toward his parents had faded in time, though he still blamed them for not protecting Lishyel when they should have. However, his own guilt still dogged his every step, he still blamed himself most of all, feeling that if he hadn’t gone out hunting that day, then perhaps his dear sister wouldn’t have been killed. His distracted thoughts betrayed him, and he was caught by two adult Dressellians who accused him of theft. A sharp backhanded blow brought his attention fully to the present moment, but his heart wasn’t in the fight and he resigned himself to the hands of fate as he was arrested.

With no one to defend his cause, and no living kin that would claim him, Phutari was sentenced to work in the asteroid mines upon his conviction as a thief. Many expected the young man to die; the work in the mines was long and difficult even for fully grown Dressellians. However, despite his general lack of caring about his own fate, Phutari possessed a resolve and deep constitution that surprised even himself at times. He accepted the work without complaint; at least the miners were given regular meals, the physical labor only served to make him stronger.

Changing Tides

Years of steady and hard labor honed Phutari to be lean and strong. The environment of the mining facilities forced him to sharpen his mind as the work strengthened his body. By the age of twenty, Phutari had disproved the idea that he would die easily, though many times during his five years there came close to changing that.

Riots among miners were growing increasingly common as the mining facilities became more and more used to punish criminals of all sorts. Phutari bore numerous scars from getting caught in those riots, including one from a deep gash across his chest from a particularly heated fight. Guards were also growing more numerous, and were known for being brutal and often sadistic in dealing with those they were charged with keeping in order.

Across the galaxy, tides were changing, spreading chaos and war in their path. In 22 BBY, those tides swept over the Dressel system as the Army of the Confederacy moved into the area as they planned a strike upon Kamino. Mercenary forces were being gathered to augment the droid armies for special operations.

With the appearance of the Army, many of those in the Dressellian mining camps found a new opportunity to escape the dismal life they had been living. Phutari was no exception to this, his mind raced with the possibilities that joining the Separatist army presented and soon left Dressel behind. Phutari was willing to gamble on the uncertain future with the Army against the life he knew wouldn’t change if he had stayed. His sharp senses, cunning mind, and strength quickly earned him a solid place among the mercenary special operatives.
