"What hurts you, blesses you. Darkness is your candle."
―Rumi

Onwai Starborne was a TIE Fighter for the Emperor's Hammer as a member of the TIECorps. Within this organization, Onwai rose to the rank of Captain and commanded a squadron in glorious defense of the new would be empire. It was during his time in the TIECorps that Onwai was sent on a number of top secret missions that ultimately led to his disappearance for over a decade. No one is quite sure what missions Onwai was sent to accomplish but the call of the Dark Side brought him back out of one darkness and into another.

Character History

A Family in Name Only

Two of the definitions of a family are “a group of people who are related” and “a group of people united by certain convictions or a common affiliation”. While Onwai Gral was indeed related to the people who grew up with on Coruscant he in no way shared their convictions or affiliations. The son of a Rebel-turned-New-Republic supply captain, Onwai grew up on spaceships and under the heavy hand of Rebel propaganda.

As he continued to grow into adolescence, Onwai’s father attempted to sway him into joining up with the New Republic and put his natural skills as a pilot to good use defending the fledgling Republic and the eradication of the Galactic Empire.

Unbeknownst to his father, Onwai had always felt drawn to the order and structure the Empire represented. While he may not have harbored the same xenophobia that seemed to fuel the Emperor, Onwai saw the beauty and glory that the Galactic Empire represented, and believed that it could be once again used to restore order and peace to the Galaxy.

Emperor's Hammer

At the age of 17, Onwai stole one of his father’s starships and made his way to one of the remaining warlords in the Galaxy, Grand Admiral Ronin. Onwai believed in what the Emperor’s Hammer was attempting to accomplish in the absence of the later Emperor and his chief lieutenant, and he believed serving the Emperor’s Hammer was a place where he could find his true family.

Upon enlisting with the Emperor’s Hammer, Onwai found a home in the TIE Fighter bays of the Hammer’s fierce fighter wings. His natural experience with star craft and his uncanny ability to fix any mechanical problems made him a coveted member of the crew with many of the TIE Fighter squadrons in the TIECorps. However, Onwai longed for more and eventually applied to be a TIE Fighter pilot and command the fighters that he once maintained.

Onwai was found to be an above average pilot during his training but what stood out most to his superiors was his leadership skills and ability to think outside of the box and try new things. While this free thinking was generally frowned upon in most corners of the Empire, the commanders of the TIECorps knew that this non-traditional thinking was needed if the Hammer was to survive in a galaxy bent on its destruction. Eventually, Onwai rose to the rank of Captain and commanded a squadron of TIE Fighters known as Mu Squadron. He quickly showed his willingness to accept missions others found impossible, and was able to push his pilots in order for them to exceed even their own expectations of themselves.

In the Emperor's Hammer Onwai had found his new home and what he considered to be his true family. The life of a fighter pilot spoke to his inner callings and he prospered in this new role. However, his superiors had something else planned for Starborne's career, and that mission would change the course of his life for years to come.

The Lost Years

Little is known about the decade and a half in which Onwai Starborne was sent out from the TIECorps on a secret mission from the Executive Officer of the Emperor's Hammer and into the far reaches of the Galaxy. What is known is that Onwai set out with a hand-picked flight of TIE Advanced starfighters and that none of them have been heard from since that time.

A New Darkness

Responding to a message from the Dark Brotherhood, Onwai rendezvoused with what he thought were members of the Emperor's Hammer Dark Jedi contingent. When he arrived at the designated coordinates he was taken captive and forcibly entered into the roles of the Brotherhood as a new Apprentice. Details of that episode can be found in the From One Darkness to Another story in the Discourse forums.

Character Information

Physical Description

A bit taller and stockier than most other fight pilots, Onwai is still in good physical shape even if he doesn't have the physique to show it. Short cropped blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes seem to captivate all who are in his presence.

Personality

Onwai is sure of himself but not in the traditional fighter jockey mold of being cocksure. He is pragmatic, calculating and patient; always looking for just the right time to strike without losing too much on his own end. A natural leader, Onwai will often be found setting the pace for those under his command, always pushing them to exceed their previous best.

Fighting Styles

As a born starfighter pilot, Onwai prefers to deal damage from the safety of distance. Whether this means shooting a blaster bolt of the quad lasers of a starfighter, Onwai finds no need to be up close and personal with his target. Onwai's choice of hand-to-hand contact, his weapons load out, and his Force powers all reflect this outlook on life.

Force Philosophy

Onwai is a Dark Jedi that embraces the Unifying Force view on fate and destiny. While a member of the Emperor's Hammer, Onwai would have more closely identified with Light Side virtues such as bravery and courage, but as time has passed and events have unfolded, the man who once wore the uniform of the Empire now finds his motivations fueled by power and hatred. How that plays itself out is still yet to be written in his journey.
