House Thorn of Osrico was one of the Great Houses of Sarkhai and principle noble house of the northern mountains. In the days of old they ruled as Kings of the Summit, but since the end of the New Sith Wars they had been Imperial ambassadors and ruled as Lords of Osrico. Their seat, Osrico, is an ancient castle, built into the summit Mount Tryfoms in the Cloeln Mountains, renowned for the perilous road leading to the keep.
Their sigil was a gold griffin standing rampant on a field of blue. Their words were "Conquest through vigilance" in reference to the legend of their founder Skyron Thorn sat alone upon the summit of Mount Tryfoms until the warring hill clans had nearly wiped each other out, before leading his brothers and sisters down the mountain to seize the lands held by the hill clans and founded their new kingdom.
The Thorns of Osrico may have had other distant relatives across Sarkhai. However after the Fall of Sarkhai in 8 ABY, most historians believe the Thorn bloodline to be extinct. However the family lineage is survived by Solas Thorn's bastard Gale and his grandson Solas Night-Thorn and his family.
Culture
Traits
The Thorn look consists of a square face, a stocky build, snow white hair and sky blue eyes.
The current generation of Thorns actually possess no true Sarkhai blood. Solas Night-Thorn is an Epicanthix, his lover Tahiri Drakon Night-Thorn is a Togruta, and his daughter Salinas is an Epicanthix-Human hybrid.
Customs
House Thorn traditionally buries deceased members of their family in the crypts below Osrico. The Kings of the Summit and Lords of Osrico are given a statue of their likeness sitting by their tomb, whereas other normal family members do not. the statues of the kings and lords have stone griffins by their feet and have great swords held in front of them, which are said to guard the dead and protect the future of the family.
House Thorn traditionally followed the old ways of Sarkhai. Following the marriage of Lord Sidara Thorn I to Lady Kavra Cinn, a follower of the Sarkhai Reformist religion, a small shrine in honor of the god from the reformation was built at Osrico.
The Thorns have traditionally been integral parts of the Sarkhai military. Five of the most famous men to serve as Paladin Lord of Sarkhai, including Raynar Thorn, were brothers, sons, or bastards of Kings of the Summit or Lords of Osrico.
History
Kings of the Summit
The Thorns are an ancient house of unknown origin. House Thorn was founded by Skyron Thorn, a legendary figure who lived during the Age of War. Skyron is said to have sat alone on the summit of Mount Tryfoms for an entire year while waiting for the warring hill clans to finish fighting each other. Once they had nearly wiped each other out, Skyron lead his brothers and sisters down the mountain to seize the lands around Mount Tryfoms and founded the Kingdom of Cloeln. The Thorns were Kings of the Summit in the mountains for fifteen thousand years since the Age of War, possibly beginning with Skyron. The Paladin King, the attainted fourteenth Paladin Lord of Sarkhai, has been suggested to have been a Thorn.
The ancient Thorns gradually defeated rival kings, such as the Plains Kings to their south and the Wood Kings to their west. For several millennia, the Thorns were no the uncontested Kings in the Northern Mountains. However, their primary antagonists, the Wood Kings from House Halos of the Ruarden Hold, swore fealty some six thousand years ago, ending the impaling ways. Meanwhile, King Sol Thorn drove bandits from the Vlusp River and the Mealey Palace was built at its mouth. This stronghold was often granted to brothers and cousins of the King of the Summit; one such branch, the family of Nash Thorn, was extinguished after allying with the with the Halos against the Thorns. King Sol's son, Sallo, defeated the Oak King and married his daughter, bringing the Towering Rise into Cloeln's realm under the lordship of House Magnus.
When the Ishil attempted to conquer Cloeln, King Silus Thorn made common cause with House Halos and defeated El'kar Xen in the Siege of the Dieing Forest, after which he raised an army and traveled to Ishildan. There he took revenge by sacking and putting hundreds to death.
