Help:Searching

This page teaches how to search for information on DJBWiki.

Search button and search pages

There is a search field on the left-hand sidebar of every page. To search for an expression in DJBWiki articles, type the expression into the box and click the "Search" button. The same button can be used to navigate to a search page which offers further options.

To go directly to an article with the search term as title, click "Go" instead. If there is no such page, then this will have the same effect as "Search" (except that a link will be provided to create such a page).

Logged-in users can configure certain options concerning search results on the "Search options" tab of their user preferences.

Tips

  • Search is case-insensitive: searches for "sith", "Sith" and "SITH" all return the same results.
  • Pressing the [Enter] key while the search field is active is equivalent to clicking on the [Go] button.
  • Search for a phrase by enclosing it in double quotation marks, eg "Clan Taldryan".
  • You can use a wildcard * in searches. For example "*saber" will search for terms ending in saber, "light*" will search for terms beginning with light, etc.
  • Words containing apostrophes (e.g. Ji K'awiil) can only be found using the exact phrase, this doesn't apply to words ending in 's.

Special character

Words with diacritics can be found by searching for the same word with the diacritics omitted. For example, Sint Odiliënberg can be found by searching for Odilienberg. (This does not apply if the character is produced in the text using an HTML character code such as "ë". If that were done in this example, then it would be necessary to search for Odili, euml and/or nberg.

For more see Help:Special characters on the Wikipedia.

Search options

Namespaces searched

The search only applies to the namespaces selected in the preferences. To search the other namespaces check or uncheck the tickboxes in "Search in namespaces" box found at the bottom of a search results page. Depending on the browser, a box may still be checked from a previous search, but may no longer be effective. To be sure the box is in effect, uncheck and recheck it.

Searching the image namespace means searching the image descriptions, i.e. the first parts of the image pages. For searching the titles, use Special:Imagelist.

Redirects can be excluded

Check or uncheck the tickbox "List redirects" in "Search in namespaces" box found at the bottom of a search results page.

The wiki text is searched

The wikitext (source text, what one sees in the edit box) is searched. This distinction is relevant for piped links.

Highlighting

Some portions of matching pages that contain the searched-for terms are shown, with the terms highlighted in red. You can set the number of lines extracted and the amount of text per line shown in your preferences.

Please note that a-z come after A-Z.

Advanced options

Searching in single namespaces can also be achieved by typing the namespace, a colon, then the search term in the search box. For example, typing "Talk:Foo" will give all pages containing "foo" in the talk namespace.
