"This is something I must do. I feel it will be important sometime in the future."
―Xilaren Bastra, creator and gatekeeper of the holocron
Xilaren Bastra - Jedi gatekeeper

Creation

"My name is Xilaren Bastra. This is my legacy."
―The first recording

Lady Xilaren Bastra, a Jedi Consular in the time of the Clone wars, was always bothered about her fate and her future. She could never clearly see what was in store for her but she always felt something wrong. This bothered her to no end, and as a practitioner and supporter of the Unifying Force doctrine her mind was never at rest.

Not long before her untimely demise and well into the war, she realized that she could meet her fate very soon and a feeling of impending doom followed her thoughts constantly. At that moment she decided to leave a recording of her life, her role in the order and her beloved philosophy. It was her gift to posterity.

Purpose

"The Unifying Force binds and connects us on many levels. All is one within it."
―Explaining the doctrine

The recordings in the holocron are mostly personal information, reports from the front or deeply emotional recordings showing the Consular in tears or pain. While most of the recordings are very cryptic and specific to some event, person or issue, there are those that are of a more general and instructional nature. Most of this information is based around the [Unifying Force] theory and doctrine, explaining and describing it in great detail.

It explains that the Force is a single entity, one without darkness or light but rather a whole that binds all things, living and non-living together through space and time. It states that Jedi use the Force as "An end in itself" while the Sith use it "As an means to an end". The doctrine is one of mystery in that it's practitioners focus on the future and searching for "fate" rather than on the present. Some people say that if Jedi of the old order embraced this doctrine, the Galactic Empire might not have risen to power in the first place.

Fate

"They're near. May the Force embrace me if I die."
―Said through tears a few hours before her death

On the planet called [Tar Morden] during a battle between the Republic Clone army and the Separatist droid force, Order 66 was issued and Xilaren, luckily was further away from the squad. when she realized her brothers were getting slaughtered, she hid and for three days they couldn't find her. All this time, she was recording. She put up a fight, killing six of the twelve clones in her squad before they found her but the rest shot her to death. The last recording of her holocron were the words "Please, help me....". After that she passed and the holocron shut down.

Discovery

"But you are a practitioner of the doctrine, Tyren Atema. You just don't realize it yet."
―The gatekeeper

55 years late, in 36 ABY, fugitive from the law and Force-user, Tyren Atema, found her skeleton and the holocron near it. It was Tyren's inner conflict at the time that activated the holocron, identifying him mistakenly as a Unifying Force practitioner. He took it for his own along with Yilaren's blue-bladed lightsaber.

Usage

"What they felt they could not be see, so they died or ran to flee. Many have thought, but few have felt. A great destiny you have been dealt."
―The gatekeepers cryptic riddles

Tyren continued using the holocron, even activating it's gatekeeper, a holo-image of lady Bastra. Her demeanor was, at first, reserved but with time she began to like Tyren, even going so far as showing him the original Xilaren's intimate and personal recordings. This was something Tyren connected with on a deeper level since their situations were similar in many respects. Her loneliness on the field corresponded well with his on the run.

Tyren still uses the holocron, away from the eyes and ears of his Clan and House. Thankfully, so far, no one has discovered his secret, and he hopes it stays that way.
