The Active Saber Combat Guide Holocron

This is a listing of the various forms of lightsaber combat used in the Star Wars Universe.

The Jedi teach a curriculum of seven main forms. Every student begins learning Form Zero, which, while not considered one of the seven "main" forms, teaches each student the power of the famed weapon, and the bond between the Jedi and their lightsaber. Shii-Cho, Makashi, Soresu, Ataru, Djem So, Niman and Vapaad form the seven forms of Jedi teaching. They rarely taught other forms as fully, and even Vapaad wasn't widely taught among the Jedi. Often, they referred to these forms by their numbers, i.e. Form III is Soresu.

The Dark Jedi Brotherhood, however, does not adhere to the Jedi curriculum. More forms are taught than the core seven, and the forms practiced among the warriors of the Brotherhood are as varied and potential deadly both to wielder and foe as are the Dark Siders themselves. Progression towards mastery in any form, much less the powerful and ancient forms practiced among the Brotherhood takes much time and effort, as well as true power within the Dark side itself.

Lightsaber Combat in the Brotherhood is broken down into three categories:

  • Core: The easiest forms to study, these forms give a duelist a good insight into Lightsaber Combat. The Core forms are: Shii-Cho, Makashi and Soresu.
  • Advanced: These forms build on what was learned in the core forms, and are a bit more specialized. Most finish their training when they have mastered an advanced form. The Advanced forms are: Ataru, Djem So, Niman, Vapaad and Dun Moch
  • Elite: Dug out from ancient holocrons, these forms are highly specialized, and difficult to learn. Only elders will have the access to study these forms enough to truly master them. The Elite forms are: Shien, Jar'Kai Niman, Sokan, Juyo and Trakata
