Enemy Starfighter Engineering and Technology

Course Two of the Engineering and Technology section teaches you about our enemies’ starfighters. Knowledge is power, and knowing the ins and outs of what your enemy flies is as important as knowing the craft of the Empire. When a pilot knows the weaknesses and strengths of his own craft and knows how to exploit the weaknesses in his opponent, he becomes a better pilot. This course will teach you everything you need to know about the starfighter craft used by the Rebel Alliance, Pirate groups, and former Imperial Allies such as the Corporate Sector Authority and the Crime Syndicate Black Sun.

The Rebel Alliance

The Rebel Alliance was able to liberate most of its starfighter designs from the Imperial Incom Corporation. With these plans and the help of traitorous scientists and engineers, the Rebellion managed to produce a group of expensive but resourceful starfighters. The resourcefulness of these fighters was needed for the Rebellion’s use of Hit and Fade attacks and other forms of Guerilla Warfare. Both funding and resources for starfighter creation were low for the Rebellion. As a result, the engineers aimed toward the construction of highly sophisticated starfighters that would be able them to survive through multiple tours of duty.

Propulsion

Because of the highly sophisticated Rebel starfighter design, a large demand is placed on energy (i.e. Shields, Hyperdrive, Laser systems). These require larger more expensive power sources for their engines. Therefore, the use of conventional Ion Engines is employed on all of the Rebel Alliance’s starfighters. Because of the sophistication and powerful energy system, Rebel Alliance starfighters are slower and far less maneuverable than the Imperial TIE class of starfighters.

Laser System

In response to the use of unshielded starfighters by the Imperial Navy, the Rebel Alliance endeavored to create a laser system that could take advantage of that weakness. Although the Rebel laser systems recharge and fire more slowly than those created by Seinar Fleet Systems, they are significantly more powerful. In theory, this design placed an emphasis on a pilot’s accuracy. By having more powerful lasers, a pilot could destroy an opponent with one fire-linked laser volley. This gave the pilot more time to quickly move between multiple targets before becoming overwhelmed by the massive numbers of TIEs at the Empires disposal.

Warhead System

All Rebel starfighters employ warhead launchers. This is yet another drain to their power systems. Moreover, in combat, the use of Rebel warhead launchers is not an optimal attack. TIE model Starfighters are exceptionally fast and maneuverable, and can often avoid a warhead long enough for it to self-detonate. In the event a warhead does kill a TIE target, it almost always a waste of resources. However, in Hit and Fade operations, these warhead launchers make their power known. They are the source of devastating losses when used against unarmed freighters and small Starships such as Corvettes. Originally, only specialized warhead launchers were used on Rebel Starfighters; however, this would become an unacceptable drawback with the deployment of the Imperial "Variable load" launchers. Some redesigns were made by the Rebel Alliance because of this advance in Imperial Technology. This continued to allow the Rebel starfighters to play a multi-combat role against the Empire.

Shield System

ALL Rebel Starfighters employ a shield system - some very strong, yet others weak. However they still have the endurance required of expensive sophisticated craft to accomplish a given mission. Chempat and Sirplex are the primary manufacturers of Rebellion shield systems. Although the quality is below the high grade Novaldex shield system employed by the Imperial Navy, these less effective systems are suitable and efficient for the Rebellions needs.

Hyperdrive

One of the greatest advantages that the Rebellion has in its Starfighter Corps is the ability of ALL craft to enter and leave a combat area with ease through the use of hyperdrive systems. Hit and Fade attacks would be impossible without the wide use of this technology. When employed on a starfighter, its range is nearly unlimited compared to the Imperial TIE units. This advantage makes it extremely hard to detect the Rebel base of operations. The ability to work in secrecy and constantly be on the run is the Rebel Alliance’s greatest advantage.

X-wing

The X-Wing is considered the prize of Rebellion because of its structure, its ability, and its history. An excellent multi-role craft, the X-Wing is perfect for Hit and Fade operations on convoys and small Starships, even in small numbers. In larger numbers, the X-Wing can seriously take on larger targets such as an Imperial Star Destroyer. Its shield system and hyperdrive allow it to escape easily if suddenly overrun during a mission. The typical TIE craft would simply be doomed.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 100 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 75 DPF
  • Laser: 4 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: 2 Krupx MG7 (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (50 SBD)
  • Hull: 20 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Close Support, Escort

Y-wing

The Y-Wing predates the X-Wing and was the only available Bomber available to the Rebellion for many years. Very slow with poor maneuverability, the Y-Wing is far from the best craft for engaging Starfighters. However, its Ion Cannons allowed the Y-Wing to become an excellent multi-role Starfighter too. Disabling and destroying targets are the primary focus for this craft. In a pinch, however, it can be used for Reconnaissance because of its excellent range.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 80 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 59 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak KX4 Lasers, 2 ArMek SW-4 Ion Cannons
  • Warhead: 2 Arakyd Flex (12 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (75 SBD)
  • Hull: 40 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Strike, Interdiction, LR Support

A-wing

The A-Wing is the Rebellion’s primary interceptor. Because of its speed and maneuverability, it is closer to the Imperial trends of Starfighter design than any other craft created by the Rebellion. The A-Wing uses only 2 laser cannons, tremendously cutting down the power requirements for this fighter. Moreover, its shield system is much weaker than its counterparts. However, the A-Wing more than makes up by these weaknesses by diverting the extra power to its engine. It’s tremendous speed even outpaces the Empire’s TIE Interceptor.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 120 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 96 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Borstel RG9 Lasers
  • Warhead: 2 Dymek HM-6 (12 Warheads)
  • Shields: Sirplex Z-9 Shields (50 SBD)
  • Hull: 14 RU
  • Missions: Close Support, Strike, Escort, Reconnaissance

B-wing

The B-Wing was designed to replace the antiquated Y-Wing. The B-Wing outclasses the Y-Wing in every area. Not only is its payload larger making it the perfect heavy assault Starfighter but it also has an extra laser and ion cannon allowing it to do more than destroy larger vessels: the B-Wing has been involved in the capture operations of several Nebulon-B Frigates. In a pinch, the B-Wing can also serve as a powerful dogfighter, although its primary role has always been against capital ships.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 91 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 70 DPF
  • Laser: 3 Gyrhil R-9X Lasers, 3 ArMek SW-7a Ion Cannons
  • Warhead: 2 Krupx MG9 (16 Warheads)
  • Shields: Sirplex Zr-41 (100 SBD)
  • Hull: 60 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Strike, Interdiction, LR Support, Deep Strike

Mercenary Faction Starfighters

Throughout the galaxy, there are still factions that oppose the Empire aside from the Rebel Alliance. These range from current to former allies all the way to lone-wolf rogue groups such as space pirates or mercenaries. Their starfighters lack the technological advancement of Imperial and Alliance contracts due to a lack of expertise and funding. These fighters use Conventional Ion Engines and generally very inexpensive. Simply put, they are the workhorses of the galaxy. They combine both Imperial and Alliance weaponry while also employing hyperdrive and shield systems. Although some of the same ideas are used, very few of their fighters are powerful, fast, or maneuverable. However, they provided a more economical choice for groups with less than adequate funds to produce a true Starfighter Corps. As a result, these fighters are generally found in the hostile rogue groups.

Authority IRD

The Authority IRD is primarily used by the Corporate Sector Authority; an Imperial sanctioned Sector Government. The IRD is an "Intercept Reconnaissance Defense" starfighter. The CSA usually use these fighters onboard their antiquated Victory-class Star Destroyers and their Marauder Corvette patrol ships. The IRD works well as an inexpensive multi-role craft. It does well in interception detail and in area patrol and defense. Additionally, it’s hyperdrive makes it a fair reconnaissance fighter as well. Its weaknesses are its poor maneuverability and weak shield system. However, an advantage is that the IRD uses the fast fire/recharge laser systems of the Empire even though they are weaker than Rebel design.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 102 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 64 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak KX5 Lasers
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Novaldex Shields (35 SBD)
  • Hull: 18 RU
  • Missions: Close Support, Strike, Escort, Reconnaissance

Pinook Fighter

The Pinook Fighter was designed as an alternative to planetary defense starfighters. Although it does not have the firepower of the IRD, it is more maneuverable. It contains a low-end shield system and a miniscule warhead capacity; both of these weaknesses limit its ability to perform multiple roles. The Pinook is still found in service around some destitute planets defense corps, but is still often found in Pirate groups as a platform defense patrol starfighter.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 96 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 82 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: (2 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (25 SBD)
  • Hull: 14 RU
  • Missions: Close Support, Strike, Escort

CloakShape Fighter

The CloakShape Fighter is one of the oldest Starfighters still seen in the galaxy. It performs adequately in all areas except its shield system which is quite significant for a Pirate craft. It lacks the raw power of newer starfighters and has an average warhead capacity. However, for its age and ability, it is a very economical craft. The CloakShape is a favorite of Pirate groups and mercenaries even though it is usually easily outclassed often in battle involving more advanced starfighters.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 93 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 72 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (96 SBD)
  • Hull: 28 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Close Support, Strike, Escort

Preybird Fighter

The Preybird fighter was originally developed for the Imperial Navy; however, very few were ordered. It was originally designed to be inexpensive and easily adaptable fighter for factory production. It was designed to counter the growing Rebel Alliance threat yet still employ fast fighting style of the TIE class starfighters. Although more maneuverable than the X-Wing, the Preybird is still less protected and has significantly less firepower. The Preybird is sometimes still employed in the Imperial Starfighter Corps, but is much more prevalent in Pirate forces.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 100 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 86 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Novaldex Shields (46 SBD)
  • Hull: 18 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Strike, Escort

T-wing

An alternative design to the Planetary Fighter, the T-Wing is a short-range interceptor. It is significantly less expensive, a smaller target, and requires less maintenance. Its shield system is smaller than the Planetary fighter but contains a larger warhead payload. Although the T-Wing is slower in competition, it still performs adequately as a high-speed interceptor.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 111 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 78 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Novaldex Shields (20 SBD)
  • Hull: 14 RU
  • Missions: Close Support, Strike, Escort, Reconnaissance

Z-95 Headhunter

The Z-95 is another very old starfighter that is still seen in service. It was the precursor to the Preybird Fighter, having an inferior Shield system, and containing a smaller warhead payload. This fighter was one of the first starfighters employed by the Rebellion before the X-Wing was able to replace it. However, after all this time, it is still a favorite of Pirate groups because of its extremely inexpensive cost. It is still a relatively good multi-role fighter and is adequate for some groups’ needs.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 100 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 86 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: (6 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (20 SBD)
  • Hull: 14 RU
  • Missions: Close Support, Strike, Escort, Reconnaissance

Planetary Fighter

Primarily an interceptor, the Planetary Fighter is very fast and has an average maneuverability for its large size. It is often used by Planetary defense groups and Pirate fleets as a quick launch Starfighter to intercept Bombers or warheads attacking vessels or platforms. Although its warhead capacity is slightly below average, it is an all-around average fighter in most other areas.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 138 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 78 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers
  • Warhead: (6 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (40 SBD)
  • Hull: 14 RU
  • Missions: Close Support, Strike, Escort

R-41 Starchaser

Another favorite of Pirate organizations is the the R-41 Starchaser. It has one significant advantage - its two ion cannons. It is a weapon often unseen on mercenary Starfighters. Because of its ion cannons, it is an excellent multi-role starfighter able to quickly disable transports while at the same time dogfighting. When compared to the Razor Fighter, it is obsolete and is being phased out of use.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 100 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 75 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers, 2 Borstel NK-3 Ion Cannons
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Chempat Shields (30 SBD)
  • Hull: 14 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Strike

Razor Fighter

The Razor Fighter is a favorite of the Black Sun Crime Syndicate. It was designed to replace the R-41 Starchaser and succeeded quite nicely. It has both a stronger hull and shield system for added protection. It is also more maneuverable than the R-41. Again, it has two Ion cannons which was especially helpful for the Black Sun’s ability to interdict convoys and seize their cargo.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 98 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 86 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak IX4 Lasers , 2 Borstel NK-3 Ion Cannons
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Novaldex Shields (38 SBD)
  • Hull: 20 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Close Support, Strike, Interdiction

Supa Fighter

Another product of the Black Sun Crime Syndicate is the Supa Fighter. It was developed along with the StarViper, which was deemed uneconomical for production and will not be discussed here. The results of the Supa Fighter project produced a rather large but very maneuverable Starfighter. It has much strong armor and a better shield system than the Razor Fighter but is somewhat slower in combat. The two fighters compliment each other’s weaknesses well in battle. An added feature is the Supa Fighter’s single Ion Cannon which, although often ineffective, can still be used in a pinch to complement the Supa’s role as an interdiction Starfighter.

Statistics:

  • Speed: 89 MGLT
  • Maneuverability: 88 DPF
  • Laser: 2 Taim & Bak KX5 Lasers , 1 Borstel NK-3 Ion Cannons
  • Warhead: (8 Warheads)
  • Shields: Novaldex Shields (80 SBD)
  • Hull: 38 RU
  • Missions: Assault, Heavy Assault, Strike, Interdiction
