Origin

Call of Freedom Squadron or COFS, started as a group of four friends who made up a very successful smuggling operation. On their travels they met a young Miraluka pilot named Revak Kur. Revak flew with them for a few years before joining the Jedi Order. When a deal with a Hutt boss went sour, they decided to end their operation and retreat to a distant world. They found New Tython. They set up homes in the outskirts of Menat Ombo. There they reunited with Revak. The four were all very skilled pilots but became restless only after a few years. When the Kotahitanga-Unity Defense Force asked them to pilot their Y-Wing squadron, they jumped at the chance to get back into the action. The Kotahitanga-Unity Defense Force decided to make each of them a flight Leader, and chose Revak Kur as their Militia Captain. The squadron is relatively small. There aren’t many support staff due to the fact that the crew repair and maintain their own ships. This makes for a very close bond between ship and pilot.

Equipment

The squadron is composed of twelve BTL-A4 Y-Wings. Each ship is armed with two KX5 laser cannons, two SW-4 ion cannons, Arakyd Flex tube proton torpedo launchers with a combined payload of 20 torpedoes and 40 proton bombs. More information about the BTL-A4s can be found here: [[1]].

Role

COFS are primarily a bomber squadron. Although they can be deployed against an offensive attack, due to the age of the bombers, this would only be as a last resort to defend New Tython. The squadron can be deployed on a large scale with escort fighters or on a much smaller scale as a stand-alone unit. The bombers can hold up well against enemy attacks, and can still complete the mission while taking heavy damage.

Pre-flight Ritual

After COFS gets briefed on their mission, the members retreat to their quarters. They gather at the mess hall and enjoy what they call their “last meal.” They use this as a time to loosen up. They enjoy their favorite foods and always have a drink to celebrate the life they had. When asked why this time is important to them, one pilot replied: “We use this time to reflect and enjoy our lives. We never know what mission will be our last. So, we treat every mission like it’s our last. It energizes us. Then before we leave to tend to our ships, our Captain says ‘Make this last one count.’ At first we laughed, now it gets us pumped!”

Flights

Each flight is composed of three fighters, one Leader and two wingmen. Their call signs start with their flight name then identifier. Their identifier is given to them based on their rank. 3 is the lowest rank, then 2, then the flight Leader.

Cresh

Leader: Dak Orlander

Species: Human

Background: Hailing from Coruscant, Dak started his piloting career as a child. He worked with his father and brothers for the family taxi service. There he met many members of the Galactic Senate and various travelers to the planet. He would hear stories from the off-worlders and his fascination for space travel began. He went to school to be a shuttle pilot. Dak had made many connections and used those connections to land him a job as a private shuttle pilot for a Naboo Diplomat. It was on Naboo where he found Ges Graddo, an already established smugger. Dak and Ges became friends and business partners. Ges used Dak’s connections to gain even more runs and they split the profit. Dak left Naboo with Ges to fulfill his craving for adventure.

Leader: Ges Graddo

Species: Human

Background: The Graddo family has been in the smuggling business from what seems like the beginning of the universe. The knowledge that Ges’ father passed down to him have been tested for centuries. They had it down to a science. Ges’ ship, the Rogue, was passed down to him from his father, and Ges had to learn the complete ins and outs of the ship: every part down to a single rivet had been handled by Ges. This was because his father put much emphasis on self-reliance. “A man who cannot live on his own, cannot live,” his father often told him. Ges would travel to many worlds. It was on Naboo that he met his friend and business partner, Dak Orlander. Dak had many connections that Ges was able to tap into, in order to expand his business. Later, Dak would leave Naboo with Ges and the two would get work from many of the Hutt clan bosses.

Leader: Letorin Dordo

Species: Mandalorian

Background: Letorin was a warrior at heart. He was proud, confident, and very good at what he did. He grew up Kalevala with parents that followed the “New Mandalorian” mindset. This he did not follow. He read of the great battles of his people, he knew what each Mandaorian was capable of and knew that he wanted to carry on the “real” ways of his people. This brought much conflict within the Dordo household. Letorin had two choices. First, he could be banished forever to the moon of Concordia. Second, he could leave Kalevala, never to return. Either way he had to leave his home world behind. Left with no other options, he left home and went to the local spaceport to find someone who would get him off the planet. He was picked up by a smuggler looking for a bodyguard, someone who was willing to rough up clients that didn’t respect the agreement. That smuggler was Ges Graddo.

Senth

Leader: Qua Tority

Species: Human

Background: Not much is known about his early life. He was a bounty hunter, hired by an unknown Hutt boss to eliminate Ges, Dek and Letorin as they landed on Kashyyyk. He sat in a tree branch overlooking their ship. Unknown to them, overhead another ship’s engine had blown off and came crashing down through the trees. The engine ripped through the tree Qua was perched and continued to fall onto another platform. This launched Qua toward the three men. Unconscious and severely burned, the three men picked him up and carried him onto their ship. When he awoke he spoke with them. He told them that he was under orders to kill them, and who he was working for, but thanked them for his rescue. After much debate the men agreed to allow Qua to work for them. Qua agreed to their terms but became part of the group quickly.
