Character History

"If we didn't have jealousy, what would we aspire to?"
―Wesley to Commodore Sulaco

Early Life

Wesley was born the son of a well known pilot in the Expeditionary Force, and raised his son from the date of his birth to become a pilot like he was. Wesley had the genes for it, and grew up wanting to become the pilot his father was. Mrs. deLuce was a firebrand herself, and supported her husband and eventually her son in all of their aspirations. Jonathan deLuce, Wesley's dad, served as a pilot since before the Exodus, and stayed loyal to his superiors by moving his family to the Dajorra System after the split.

Wesley attended a naval academy on Selen when he turned 18, and attended for three years learning to become the pilot his father was. He was near the top of his class when he graduated, and was immediately shipped off to the Expeditionary Fleet.

Joining the Expeditionary Force

Wesley deLuce was drafted into a fighter squadron immediately after graduating in 24 ABY. He was placed in Silver Night Squadron, where his father was serving as Commander. Instead of giving his son special treatment, Jonathan was harder on Wesley than he was on any of the other pilots, despite the fact that Wesley was the youngest. In engagement after engagement, Wesley was berated for his failures and mistakes, slim though they were, while the more severe mistakes of the other squad members went unnoticed. This angered Wesley a bit, but he didn't give up, and worked harder.

In 26 ABY Jonathan deLuce retired from active service, returning to Selen to get a job as an instructor at the academy his son had attended a few years previously. Jonathan wanted his son to succeed him as Commander, but the position was hotly contested by the other pilots, and a heated debate ensued. Eventually, the Proconsul stepped in and awarded Wesley the position on a trial basis.

Silver Night

Wesley had not been commanding Silver Night for long before the rumors of the Yuuzhan Vong bearing down on the Antei system began to abound. They were cutting a terrible swath through the galaxy, and were turning their cruel eyes towards their flanks, where the Dark Jedi of the Brotherhood lurked. Commander deLuce did his best to get Silver Night ready for the looming threat, as did every military leader in the Dark Jedi Brotherhood. When the Vong finally did come, Wesley proved himself to the team and his superiors, earning their respect forevermore.

The crushing onslaught that drove the Brotherhood fleet back during the Incursion brought more deaths to Arconan pilots than any conflict had before. However, the squadron with the lowest mortality rate was Silver Night. Even the highly regarded Black Malice Squadron suffered over half casualties, whereas the Silver Night team lost less than a quarter of its men. When the dust had settled and the Expeditionary Force had pulled back, Wesley had the respect of the fleet for his abilities as commander and pilot.

Personality

Wesley is a very by-the-book commander, disciplining his men for their mistakes but affording them praise where deserved. He is a very serious man, and doesn’t take kindly to slackers.
