Paths and Orders of the Brotherhood

Lore
History
The Brotherhood of Dark Jedi, though relatively recent in foundation, traces the roots of its practices back through thousands of years. One of the most important of these foundations is the Tripartite Path, followed by the ancient Star Chamber. This path teaches three distinct ways of utilizing the Force for personal power and growth, with the true Masters of the Dark Side ascending all three Paths.
The founders of the ancient Star Chamber were three, a Scholar, an Assassin, and a Warlord. Each chose apprentices, and taught them their talents and abilities. This division of three set the foundation for the early Star Chamber, and later the Brotherhood of Dark Jedi. Though this foundation was sound, it was not perfect. In their training, each student began to bear many of the prejudices of their Master, and these began to spill over into their relationship with the other Orders.

Until more recent times, a member within the Dark Jedi Brotherhood would associate themselves with an Order. These three orders provided students of the Dark Side with three different paths in which to accumulate personal power. Each of the Orders had its own manner of operations, along with associated strengths and weaknesses that drew students to them. Originally, the three Orders on the Tripartite Path were the manipulative and subtle Krath, the ruthless warriors of the Obelisk and the cunning, domination focused Sith.

The Warlord
The Brotherhood operated under these three orders for many years, with each of the orders challenging each other for dominance but always serving the Dark Side first and foremost. This all changed after the events on New Tython. Under the leadership of Grand Master Muz Ashen, Dark Jedi Brotherhood forces waged a war against a newly discovered group of Jedi on the planet. After much blood was spilled the conflict finally ended with the Jedi becoming part of the Brotherhood. This required a change to the organization.
The Warlord was an exiled Sith, a participant in a failed coup to overthrow Marka Ragnos as Dark Lord. Being a pure-blood Sith, he was convinced of the superiority of his legacy, and its control of the Dark Side. He taught his students to seek positions of leadership within the Cult, and to guide the other Orders to submission. It was the Warlord who sought to expand the reaches of the Star Chamber beyond their home systems, to reclaim the glory lost by Ludo Kressh and Naga Sadow, at the end of the Great Hyperspace War, and the utter failure of Exar Kun after the Great Sith War.

The followers of the Light Side brought with them a mirror of the Tripartite Path. A Jedi could become a peaceful Consular focused on learning, a highly trained Guardian that focused on defensive combat or a skilled Sentinel that augmented their abilities with stealth and technology.

The Scholar
Following the abolishment of the Krath and Obelisk Orders under the rule of Darth Pravus, the Orders saw a change again. All members of the Jedi Order were joined beneath one Order, being balanced against the Sith and Gray Orders. Non-Force users were brought into one of two orders, Mercenary or Loyalist Orders. This would see change again under Grand Master Cantor, with the Gray and Dark Jedi Orders being brought under a single umbrella for both Dark and Gray Paths: the Force Disciple order.
The Scholar, a renowned sorceress from the deepest regions of the Core, was already mad when she joined the Warlord. Her strange third eye gave her visions and insight into the future and the past. She guided the Assassin from Corellia to the Antei System. It was from her that we gained our first knowledge of the Final Order. Her students were taught to seek out and unravel the ancient mysteries, so that a full knowledge of the Dark Side might lead them to power.

The Assassin
Paths
Finally, the Assassin was a strong, proud man from Corellia. Lauded as the most efficient murderer of the day, his name was spoken in hushed whispers. Often the merest threat of his attention was enough for a rival to back down. The Assassin was mired in the politics of the system, but despised them. When he joined the Star Chamber, he and his students sought unity with the Dark Side, by unifying their physical forms with the Force, in a harmony of energy and matter. They studied war-skills as the expression of this sought unity, and grew into the most ferocious warriors ever to plague the Jedi.

With the inclusion of the Jedi from Tython, for the first time in the history of the Brotherhood an individual had the option to choose an alignment, which would be called their Path. Members in service to the Dark Side of the Force walked the Dark Path and members who aligned themselves with the Light Side now also had a home on the Light Path. Shortly after the inclusion of the Light, those who sought to balance between the Light and Dark Paths looked for their own way. It was then that the Brotherhood began to recognize the Gray Path as its own separate avenue.

Schism
In the modern Brotherhood, a member first aligns themselves with one of these three paths that most closely represents their philosophical view of the Force and/or the galaxy: Light, Dark and Gray.
For a century after the Great Sith War, the Star Chamber solidified its position in the Galaxy, acting in secret from what we now call the Antei system. They carefully manipulated system and regional politics, in attempts to cause strife and discord across the sector. Their policies placed them in direct conflict with the decree of a later Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Bane, and his Apprentice. The Star Chamber, being much older than the Decree, therefore kept its origins very quiet, as to avoid confrontation with the most powerful of the Dark Jedi. Their ultimate goal was the recreation of the Sith Empire, and the culmination of the Final Order.
The triumvirate was successful, for as long as it lasted. The Assassin Ferran led their forces where open combat was required, his own power equal to a thousand of his lesser. Warlord Okemi guided their overall strategy, studying and planning every conquest carefully, his mind forever on the future. The Sorceress Tiamat provided her own mysterious arts, and through her visions and ancient knowledge, brought ever increasing power to their designs.
As far as we know their plans where accidentally thwarted by the Sorceress. Acting on a vision that she declared would herald the Final Order, she and her students began a grand ritual, designed to extinguish the lights of all stars, using a sympathetic bond between the solar bodies, and their presence in the Force as symbols of life and the Light Side. Okemi sanctioned the ritual, giving his blessing, against the protest of Ferran. As the ritual collapsed, the Assassin slew Taimat. The star of the Antei system partially reverted to the Darkness, destroying all life in the system in its transformation, including Okemi and Ferran.
The Star Chamber was devastated, with only a handful of their students surviving. For the next four thousand years, they and their students kept watch. It was only after the fall of the Empire, that more students began to emerge.
Finally, the Three Orders have been reunited under the Dark Lord of the Sith…

Orders
Each Order has its own advantages and weaknesses that make it an essential part of the Brotherhood. No Order could be successful in completely exterminating another Order. These stereotypes do not define every member of the Order, but provide a framework of expectations upon which the members of the Brotherhood generally react to their own Order, and their rivals.
While a member’s path is associated with philosophical views, or their general affiliation, a member’s order is more closely akin to a chosen professional course. The first determining factor as to which orders are available to members are whether or not they have the ability to use the Force. Those who can wield the Force and those that cannot (Non-Force Users) will have different Orders available to them.
The Elders of the Dark Side, have Ascended over all three Orders. While still attached to their Order of study, their knowledge of the Dark Side has broadened enough that they are no longer limited by their old preconceptions. One of the highlights of a Dark Jedi’s career is this point in their study. Many who would become powerful and valuable Elders are stuck behind, because of their adherence to stereotypes. Those who are capable of making this leap, are perhaps one in a thousand, which is why the ranks of the Elders in the Brotherhood are so thin.

Grand Masters are completely unrestricted in their views, having a firm mastery of all aspects of the Dark Side, even those not recognized by the Tripartite Path. These are the true Lords of the Dark Side, and the most like the Greatest, Lord Darth himself.
A Non-Force user is able to select from the Orders of Loyalist and Mercenary, and can do so while walking any of the three Paths. A Loyalist has pledged their service and support to a branch of their unit’s military as a professional soldier. In stark contrast, the Mercenary’s services are sold to the highest bidder and are not generally part of the “official” command structure of a unit. Having the options of walking any of the three Paths within either Order creates a wide range of options for development. You could be the Bounty Hunter with a gruff exterior and a heart of gold as a Mercenary on the Light Path or you could be the cruel taskmaster pushing their troops to the brink and beyond as a Loyalist on the Dark Path, or many options in-between.

As a Force User, a member will see their choice of Orders restricted by their chosen Path. Orders available to Force Users are: Jedi Order, Sith Order, and the Force Disciple Order. The Force Disciple Order is the only one of the three available to all Force Users on all three Paths. For example, you could be on the Light Path but eschew the strict rules of the Jedi Order. The Jedi Order and Sith Order in particular exist as unique options for those on the Light and Dark Paths respectively. These Order more closely align with their historical counterparts along with the rich histories and philosophical legacies of those organizations. While the combination of Path and Order can be disorienting at first, it allows for combinations that give members opportunity for more complex character development.

The former Obelisk and Krath orders, alongside the Jedi orders such as Sentinel and Guardian, can be selected through Traditions. Imperial and Mandalorian options are also available options. It is important to note that while these are available to further refine characters for others, it is not a requirement for membership. This feature functions as a value add in outlining a character for others at a glance and in no way limits those who do not partake in the available options.

Paths and Orders of the Brotherhood

History

Until more recent times, a member within the Dark Jedi Brotherhood would associate themselves with an Order. These three orders provided students of the Dark Side with three different paths in which to accumulate personal power. Each of the Orders had its own manner of operations, along with associated strengths and weaknesses that drew students to them. Originally, the three Orders on the Tripartite Path were the manipulative and subtle Krath, the ruthless warriors of the Obelisk and the cunning, domination focused Sith.

The followers of the Light Side brought with them a mirror of the Tripartite Path. A Jedi could become a peaceful Consular focused on learning, a highly trained Guardian that focused on defensive combat or a skilled Sentinel that augmented their abilities with stealth and technology.

Paths

With the inclusion of the Jedi from Tython, for the first time in the history of the Brotherhood an individual had the option to choose an alignment, which would be called their Path. Members in service to the Dark Side of the Force walked the Dark Path and members who aligned themselves with the Light Side now also had a home on the Light Path. Shortly after the inclusion of the Light, those who sought to balance between the Light and Dark Paths looked for their own way. It was then that the Brotherhood began to recognize the Gray Path as its own separate avenue.

In the modern Brotherhood, a member first aligns themselves with one of these three paths that most closely represents their philosophical view of the Force and/or the galaxy: Light, Dark and Gray.

For more information, please see the Paths of the Brotherhood article.

Orders

While a member’s path is associated with philosophical views, or their general affiliation, a member’s order is more closely akin to a chosen professional course. The first determining factor as to which orders are available to members are whether or not they have the ability to use the Force. Those who can wield the Force and those that cannot (Non-Force Users) will have different Orders available to them.

Alignment & The Force

In the Brotherhood’s Character Sheet System, Force powers are considered neutral and are not tied to any particular path or order. This means that a Dark Jedi can use Healing and a Light Jedi can use Force Lightning. This is done for logistics reasons. For more information see the CS Guide: Force Powers article.

Traditions

For those members who have reached the rank of Equite, it is possible to declare further adherence beyond Orders and Paths. Traditions are chosen and made available based on a combination of Path and Order, while others are available to all members. These act more like ideological or organizational familiarity.
